Expensive, but capable

I do not use any of the "cloud" type features of any Synology NAS. I'm sure they're an appeal for some people, but I just want lots of reliable storage. This device is darned expensive for what it is, but really the biggest expense is going to be the drives you fill it with. For me, at the time I made my purchase, the costs of just 6 disks were twice the cost of the device. I had a previous version of this device (the 2415+) which eventually died a sudden death due to the Intel Atom issue. I revived it with the support unofficially recommended 100 ohm resistor fix. Even before the unexpected failure, I already had a migration plan and had purchased this device to be the replacement of the other one, so I could migrate my data. (Lucky coincidence for me, I guess.) I purchased after market ECC RAM to upgrade the RAM and also the extra add-on card for NVMe caching. Both were very easy to install, and worked as expected (see my other reviews if interested.) I do recommend you lock your drives in as you install them, but make sure to put the keys in a place where you can find them (like one of the key lockers for spare keys) because if you ever have a drive fail, and you're in a hurry to replace it, you don't want to be like I was and searching your whole "computer room" to find out where you hid them on yourself ;)

Fantastic!
I run Plex with this and it works flawlessly. Plus store over 20 Tb of digital files with space for over another 20 Tb. Obviously this depends on drive size.
A couple of tips for those starting out:
Run it with SHR 2. You lose two drives for redundancy but worth it.
Always have a hot spare. If a drive fails or starts to fail it will transfer all the files to the hot spare which then becomes a regular drive. Remove the failed drive when done transferring and replace with a new drive to become the new hot spare.
