Quiet, Looks good, drives feel really snug inside so don't cause vibrations (as one D-Link NAS I had). I got two 3TB drives in it right now in RAID 0. Has worked well for more than 2 years. Good support and many features are available. Media server for streaming, VPN, cloud... Overall, very well designed. The flat metal back door has fans attached to it which give good air circulation but are pretty quiet. Also the door has a basic hinge design which makes it very reliable and gives easy access to the hard drives inside. Two screws hold it in place. I read reviews on some units that couldn't get something simple as that right. My old D-Link for example had the door on the front which vibrated giving it an awful noise.

Other thoughts:
The USB ports on the back work only for external devices and hard drives. You can not hook up this unit directly to computers via USB. I'm not taking off stars for this because it never claimed to be able to do that, it's a NAS. But... when you have terabytes of storage and you want to do some major copying doing this over network is pretty slow.

Editing RAW photos in Lightroom can be pretty slow over network too. Most of my storage is occupied by RAW photos at least 50% of which I should delete, if I get the time to go through them and slowness of network connectivity doesn't make things easier. There's a particular minimum speed requirement (subjective - for me), that is the time it takes to fully load a RAW photo in Lightroom. About a second is ideal, 2 seconds I can live with it... 5+? ehh, kind of annoying.

Why did I buy this unit? To securely access/edit my RAW photos minimizing corruption because it's over network and RAID-0. Considering that RAID is not a backup, meaning I need another drive to hold copy of my data, and that the network speed is far from ideal I have reconsidered my purchase in favor of non-network RAID enclosures. They are much faster as they have USB2/3 ports as well as eSATA.

Buy this if you need your files to be available on the network. If you only have one computer that will be accessing the files, consider non-network RAID enclosures instead.

Excellent product; good performance

My setup is 4x2TB RAID5. In addition, I have an external 2TB disk hanging off the USB 2.0 port and a Cyberpower UPS, networked on wired 1Gbps Ethernet. I am using Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB and this box supports the new 4K block size option.

For the RAID 5 volume, I get 25MB/sec write and 70 MB/sec reads which I am very satisfied with.

The system has been up and running since I powered it up about 6 weeks ago.

One problem I had was that a Mac Time Machine backup to the external drive kept failing. By trial and error, I found that this was due the FAT32 filesystem on the external drive. Once I changed it to EXT4, it has worked like a charm.

I'm still experimenting with the Media server features. It can serve up high resolution 1080P video to my PS3 with no glitches. Also, I can access my photos from anywhere on the internet using the iPhone Synology DS Photo+ application (also needed to setup Dynamic DNS and port forwarding on my router).

The system uses very little power -- 45 watts when in use.

Some minor quibbles:
[1] There is a 10-15 second lag when I first access the device. Perhaps this is because it has to spin up the disks so in a way I am glad it hibernates when it can since that increases the disks' life.
[2] When I moved about 100MB of photos to its Photo directory, the CPU went to 100% and stayed there for quite some time. On the forums I found out that this is because it makes a low resolution copy of the pictures to serve up to the iPhone. But even if the CPU is 100% the NAS performance wasn't affected since the photo conversion runs as a lower priority task.

It is very feature rich and some of the other features (remote backup, iTunes Server) are on my to-do list.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this product.

Better than I expected..

Probably the best tech purchase I've made in the past year. I had no problems setting up a Hybrid 1-disk redundant array with 2 2TB and 2 3TB disks. Power button is a bit finicky, but I don't mind because I've only had to use it a time or two since I bought it. The 411j just works.. And it's fast. I routinely get 70+ megabytes per second transfers over gigabit ethernet. Three things that I love about this NAS vs others I have used. First, the amount of addons that can be installed in DSM to expand the NAS to act like a mailserver, VPN server, LDAP server, Syslog, etc.,.. Second, Synology frequently updates the DSM software with new features and better performance. Third, free android apps to access files and music from my android based smart phone. Synology could have nickel and dimed us for these apps but choose not to. I appreciate that. That's the way it should be. They also didn't block access to setting up SSH on the NAS. Thank you.

Overall, I am very pleased with my Synology DS411J. Highly recommend it. If your reading this and trying to decide whether this NAS is right for you, go to their website and try the online DSM demo. Best way to see what this rig can do.
