I researched small office / home NASs for months. I looked at building my own system with an Atom processor and FreeNAS. I looked at IX System's FreeNAS Mini. I looked at Drobos. I looked at everything with a reasonable price tag:

Nothing beat the Synology systems for the combination of ease of use and rich feature set such as:

All the RAID configurations like 1, 5, 6, 1+0, etc.
Well designed, easy to use web based management interface (DSM).
It's a real computer, running Linux, so it can run a lot of services.
Speaking of which, the management interface has a package installer that lets you easily install some really useful services like: web servers, Wordpress, Docker and Docker images, Plex Media Server, iTunes Server, etc.

You can also upgrade the system to a full 16GB (ignore the Synology claim of 6GB) for about $71. You have to use very specific memory modules but I've done it and it's very, very easy. Upgrading to 16GB makes the NAS run insanely fast as it caches a lot more in memory. (memory to buy http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW)

I have been considering getting one of these for about three years now. I've been using Windows Home Servers since their first version, and had upgraded to a new self built server when the newer version was released. And like many people, Microsoft dropping support for their drive expansion they offered in the first version was a major hassle. Fortunately several software vendors stepped up to the plate and made programs to do the same thing, so once again us Windows Home Server users could expand an array easily.

As my data needs grew, I kept building new servers, getting system boards that could handle more SATA ports. My current server could support 7 SATA drives inside, and at the time I built it, 3TB drives were as big as you could go without spending an arm and a leg. And I filled it up, added more drives to the "array" via USB ports, until I couldn't expand it anymore.

The biggest worry on the home server's drive software was that there was no redundancy. So a drive being lost meant the data on it was lost. The rest of the array would still function, but suddenly there'd be files missing.

In all my reading about NAS devices, and talking to other IT people, I ended up settling on the Synology for the list of features and apparent reliability. So when I had a few clients who needed a NAS device, we got them some of the four bay units and I was able to really dig into them in real world use. And everything I did, I was impressed with. So there was no way I was not going to get one, it was just a matter of "when."

Right after Christmas this year, a two terabyte drive on my Alienware media center PC took a dump.

You have car insurance, house insurance and a personal liability policy. Why wouldn't you protect the electronic data that is important to you?

Like a lot of people our lives have moved from film cameras and videotape to digital cameras, dvd's and Blu-Ray discs over the last 10 years. As the technology has advanced so has the size of the files created by the devices. Our first digital camera was a 4 megapixel camera and now my wife's latest Nikon routinely produces files in excess of 12-14.

We had a few accidents here and there but nothing traumatic enough to really move us where we should be as far as backup goes. Then we moved, and in doing so our main computer lost it's hard drive to damage.

Everything was gone. Email, contacts, addresses, pictures, etc. Frantic I began reaching out to data recovery companies. A national company had a local office where I took the hard drive and had it assessed. It was, for the most part, recoverable through their tools. (I've almost 30 years experience in computing but no extensive work in data recovery.) The price was $1200.

With little recourse I wrote the check and got our data back.

Ever since then I've been shopping for the solution that would prevent the same thing from ever happening. I've reviewed NAS box after box. Spoken with friends, neighbors and co-workers. I even spoke to the data recovery people who rescued my data. Their advice was a Synology box.

I bought the 8 bay for a few reasons. One was that we would have a box we could grow into as our documents, photographs and video storage needs grew. (I bought three WD red 6TB NAS drives for our box but you certainly could start with less.) I wanted something powerful enough to handle the work the box needed to do.

This NAS is fantastic. I upgraded from my Synology DS412+ for the extra drive bays, but the faster processor really makes this shine as a Plex media server! Now movies that I have to transcode on the fly are exceptionally smooth.

I am using four of the eight drive bays for Western Digital Red Drives, and a fifth for an SSD read cache. I can confirm that migrating my drives from the DS412+ to the DS1815+ was as simple as backing up the configuration, moving the drives to the new machine, and firing it up. After minimal adjustments I was back in business with minimal down time, which is where I think Synology has an edge over the competition. The ease of the upgrade process shows that this company cares about its customers, and the frequent software updates Synology demonstrates that they take the security of your data very seriously.

I highly recommend this NAS for the prosumer or small business professional. The dozens of backup, multimedia, business, security and utility programs available for the Disk Station Manager will ensure that no matter what you need to store and distribute your data for, the DS1815+ can do the job reliably and superbly!
