Don't even know where to start! SOAD is a fantastic band and their debut album is fanTASTIC. Crazy-sounding, theatrical, at times political (certainly not as political as Toxicity though). The tone still holds up to this day.

This great System of a Down debut album sounds ABSOLUTELY AMAZING on a vinyl record. It just goes to show how much better a record sounds compared to streaming and MP3.

SOAD's debut album is considered by many fans to be their best offering. While I don't reside in this camp I do believe it's an excellent album, full of creative songwriting (Peephole, Darts, War?), heavy bangers (Sugar, Know, Ddevil) and surreal, almost Dadaist lyricism. The overall impact is immense, with walls of sounds both heavy and subdued fighting it out for the listener's attention. While the dynamic interplay may not be as nuanced as future SOAD albums the record presents a very solid glimpse into the band they would eventually evolve into. Unpredictable, driving, melodic, moving, aggressive, political, off kilter, avant garde and a similar flurry of adjectives.
The vinyl release of this LP, however, is of extreme note. The dynamic range on here is SO much more pleasing than the CD I've been listening to for years. Certain moments really stand out such as the contrast of acoustic guitars and electric punishment in Suggestions, the quiet/loud interplay of Spiders and the intro and outro of Peephole. Honestly tho, the whole thing sounds fantastic from start to finish. Truly the best audio representation of this recording.
If you're a long time fan looking to earn that sweet vinyl cred or a newbie with a turntable looking to purchase some high art packaged as Nu-metal you couldn't go wrong here. The music itself is a 4/5 for me, but the record itself is a solid 5.
For fans of: Faith No More, Korn, Rage Against The Machine
Choice jams: Suggestions, Peephole, Mind

This is a crazy album. I couldn't believe that it's one of the 1001 Records that You Should Hear Before You Die after my first listen of it. The lyrics of System of A Down's first album are intriguing because they're unique and don't make since at first; they're poetic. The booklet has weird art and includes lyrics to all the songs along with footnotes to a few of them. Here's the songs:
1)"Suite-Pee" is the track I skip over because it offends christianity.
2)"Know" is a catchy strong song.
3)"Sugar" was a hit. "The Kombucha mushroom people..." When it goes to the chorus, the rhythm is strong, but when the verses are heard, there's a fun guitar rhythm, and then the song ends fast with crazy drum work.
4)I didn't like "Suggestions."
5)"Spiders" is a weird sounding slower track. Last of the two hits from this CD.
6)"DDevil" is a short interesting song.
7)"Soil" has the most complicated beat on this album. The repeated lines at the end are catchy.
8)"War?" is a fast-paced fighting song.
9) "Mind" wasn't that good. Starts off mellow, then gains strength. A lot of yelling included.
10)"Peephole" is catchy and fast. You can actually hear the lyrics mentioned on this one. "Don't you ever get stuck in the sky."
11) "CUBErt" has an interesting beat. Fast drums.
12)"Darts" sounds okay.
13)"P.L.U.C.K." features yelling and is fast-paced.
Overall, this is an intriguing album and thus is worth checking out. Some of the relative lyrics are out of this world. For the most part, the rhythms off System of a Down's debut are fast mingled with yells and weird but creative manipulations of vocals at times. Also, on the back of the album, there's a paragraph of a warning that encourages its readers to take action. Released in 1998, this album was produced by Rick Rubin. AMERICAN.

Just awesome one of my favorite records prior one of my first hard-core rock album I ever bought I love the saying on the back that was written on the liner notes of the city and it kept it all this original artwork in the sleeve

Good pressing and sound quality. When this came out I played it non stop, knew it word for word. But sadly most of the songs didnt hold up. Not disappointed really because it was familiar but the same magic wasnt there. I will say if you've never heard this album it will blow you away. Some of the riffs make you feel like youre inside an Atari system. The vocals are beautiful and refined but at the same time CRAZY AS HELL. And the subject matter is quite intense and thought provoking. If youre hoping to get back into something you loved before, seek something else. If you only recently heard of SOAD, this is the album to get.

... album from 1998 (i think their debut) is a perfect showcase for their originality

SOAD are one of the most original Metal bands you can come across and this album from 1998 (i think their debut) is a perfect showcase for their originality. Contrast track 4 Superstition (very quirky) with track 5 Spiders (more conventional but still unconventional). If you've not heard SOAD I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to give you a band to compare them with but if you like original, quirky, heavy metal, then spending a fiver on this album should be money well spent and rewarded.

Huge SOAD fan and remember hearing their first album eons ago, very young and thought they were awesome and they still are. Not a bad track here, Spiders and War being revisited mostly by me but the whole album is great.

The debut album from this unique metal band. No one sounded like them then or still. I got it for next to nothing at Zoverstocks and you should buy all there albums as no one will ever sound the same and how many bands ever can you say that of ???
