I very rarely ever write reviews but this time I am compelled to do so. This is such a fantastic book for a beginner. I have little knowledge about Indian spiritual and belief systems and this book serves as an excellent guide for any one who wishes to explore the philosophical aspects and debates behind the "Shat Darshanas" ( the 6 limbs / visions) of Indian spiritual thinking. Very well written in plain language and is a very easy read.

I very strongly recommend it to anybody who has even the slightest inclination to know about the Indian philosophical systems. This is the first book to go to.

Clever Amazon suggested I might be interested in this book based on my previous purchases, and I was. It's not new (except to me) - published in 1983 by the Himalayan Institute. The author, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, was asked by his guru Swami Rama to write a book on Indian Philosophy, intended to be useful to graduate students in the Himalayan Institute's courses. Padit Rajmuni wears his profound learning lightly. I found his lucid prose so helpful that I can't praise it enough. I'm a yoga teacher of some 10 years' standing who studied this material when training, and have continued to do so; but this book clarified many issues for me. I'll be using some of the insights in my own meditation practice and in my classes. The title of the book says it exactly - it covers initial definitions of philosophy and of seven systems or darshana giving a comprehensive overview of this rich system. I quote from the Foreword by Dr. Arpita with which I am in full agreement: "This text will satisfy the reader's initial curiosity and eliminate confusion, while piquing interest in and paving the way for further study." I wish I'd discovered it years ago.
