Systems performance analysis and tuning lead to a better end-user experience and lower costs, especially for cloud computing environments that charge by the OS instance. Systems Performance, 2nd Edition covers concepts, strategy, tools, and tuning for operating systems and applications, using Linux-based operating systems as the primary example.

World-renowned systems performance expert Brendan Gregg summarizes relevant operating system, hardware, and application theory to quickly get professionals up to speed even if they’ve never analyzed performance before, and to refresh and update advanced readers’ knowledge. Gregg illuminates the latest tools and techniques, including extended BPF, showing how to get the most out of your systems in cloud, web, and large-scale enterprise environments. He covers these and other key topics:
*Hardware, kernel, and application internals, and how they perform
*Methodologies for rapid performance analysis of complex systems
Optimizing CPU, memory, file system, disk, and networking usage
*Sophisticated profiling and tracing with perf, Ftrace, and BPF (BCC and bpftrace)
*Performance challenges associated with cloud computing hypervisors
*Benchmarking more effectively

Fully updated for current Linux operating systems and environments, Systems Performance, 2nd Edition addresses issues that apply to any computer system. The book will be a go-to reference for many years to come and recommended reading at many tech companies, like its predecessor first edition.

From the Preface

"For the past six years I have been a senior performance engineer at Netflix, applying the field of systems performance to the Netflix microservices environment. I’ve worked on the performance of hypervisors, containers, runtimes, kernels, databases, and applications. I’ve developed new methodologies and tools as needed, and worked with experts in cloud performance and Linux kernel engineering. These experiences have contributed to improving this edition."

— Brendan Gregg, December 2020

I am a software engineer who does systems performance analysis as part of my job. This book let me grow my knowledge, it did expand my horizons in many areas, especially BPF. Thanks!

P.S. This certainly is not a book NOT for absolute beginners.

Few technical books really provide sufficient coverage of the subject material - but Brendan Gregg's 2nd Edition of Systems Performance, Enterprise and the Cloud - is a masterpiece.

Within this tome are the techniques that will teach you deep knowledge.
When you have synthesized the wisdom within these pages - you will have achieved a level of mastery that will distinguish you for the rest of your career.

This book should be on the shelf of every developer, tester, engineer, architect.

I have started working with ebpf and performance related to Kubernetes clusters. The way the chapters flow is like a Jedi Master defining methodologies to cloud computing. The depth and definitions influence my daily work. The is the book along with EPBF Performance that are on my desk, and I consult them on a daily basis.

It's fairly easy to pick up on the basics of analyzing system performance, and is one of the skills systems administrators learn early on. You shouldn't confuse that level of knowledge with the one you will have after reading through and learning from this book.

Brendan's work in the first, and now greatly expanded and updated, second edition is the gold standard when it comes to moving beyond that novice understanding, and will take you well past an intermediate level knowledge into an advanced practitioner. I make daily use of the things I've learned from both editions.

If you have the first edition, the new and refined content here is well worth it (and pick up his BPF book as well if you haven't already!). If you don't own the first edition, it doesn't matter if you're a systems administrator, software developer, devops engineer, or performance engineer with many years of experience - there will be things in here that you did not know and can learn from.

This book has been amazing. I have not read it all the way to the end just quite yet, there's a lot of information to unpack. There is quite a bit of repetition in there which I actually find nice because it refreshes the context but also great as a reference.

This has helped me understand quite a bit more about raw performance tuning and how to approach it smartly. I think the methodology was a big help. The tools have also been helpful as its helped me fill in a lot of my blind spots in technology. Again, this is a great book.

I'm a general software engineer and this has helped me gain insight into places I don't always get to work directly in. If you're trying to better understand systems in general, I think this is a great book for that too.

It’s one of the best books I have come across. System performance is a very subjective matter. It’s more of an art than science. However author has systematically given approach to solve a performance problem which is very helpful when there are production issues that needs a solution in minutes. Following these approaches or methodologies one has better chance of figuring out a solution to the problem rather than trying things randomly and hoping for success. I would recommend this book to everyone who is willing to extract best performance out of their servers to give better customer experience.

I would not be alive without this book right now. Because without Brendan’s work and support on analyzing systems performance I’d be banging my head against the wall until I’m dead. I owned the first edition and I’m very happy to see how much more updated stuff Brendan added to the new edition. It covers everything you need to know and consider when doing systems performance, including modern cloud based and container environments. It’s an ultimate reference to every tool there exists in Linux to measure/tune/debug performance. I’m amazed how much I’ve learned from this book and continue learning. THANK YOU Brendan, please write as many books on this subject as you have time for, I’ll buy them all.

If you want to really be the systems SME in your organization, this book is a must. Doesn't matter if you are a sys admin, SRE, Automation Engineer, platform engineer, network engineer, security engineer this book is a must. The first version of this book was required reading for everyone in our team and it really elevated our organization. The second version is updated and also talks about the cloud. One of the most awaited books of 2020 for me. Keep up the great work Brendan!

Brendan Gregg covers performance from head to toe, always with keeping practical applications in the sights.
Since he deals with a vast number of topics in some depth the book has well justified 800+ pages, which could be frightening, but for an orientation on the subject not all the text needs to be read the first time round and the book is very accessible for anyone with a bit of background in system administration.
