When I opened the case the DVD and Blu Ray discs were inside along with the Digital Copy redemption code. This disc contains the original 1982 version of the movie. I was VERY glad to see the CGI "enhanced" 2002 version is NOT included, but there are a few of the deleted scenes that were on the 2002 (25th anniversary ed.) included here that were enjoyable. I can't say anything that hasn't been said already- ET is magical, wonderful, and I'm very glad it is still available so my kids can enjoy it as much as I did 30 years ago
E.T. was a movie that I watched so many times as a kid, I literally wore out the VHS tape. However, it wasn't until a recent blu-ray viewing that I was able to understand and appreciate just how incredible the film is all the way around. The first particular thing I noticed was the cinematography, something I did not notice as a younger viewer. It soon became very obvious to me that this film was a visual masterpiece. Shots in the beginning of the movie very closely resembled Raiders of the Lost Ark, something that must have been Spielberg's decision as both films were shot by different Directors of Photography (DPs). The way that the faces of the authority figures were shadowed or left unseen at the beginning of the film was such a subtle yet impactful decision.
The same thing this movie did for Spielberg it did for it's composer John Williams. As if what he had already done for Star Wars, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders etc etc etc wasn't enough, the music in E.T. is what elevates this film into the magical realm. If you watch the movie and pay close attention, you can tell that the music almost never stops.
The final thing, that probably goes more unnoticed than it should, is the acting and the characters. The characters are all classics of the early 1980's, the separated mother, the middle child, the little sister, and they are all unnoticeably played to perfection. The child actors in this movie were so great they made Mr. Spielberg want to have children of his own.
So to recap, perfectly shot, perfectly scored, perfectly acted, perfectly written and masterfully directed. What more could you ask for?
I've seen this film approaching 70 times, and I know where the beats are, top to bottom. I was looking for changes, and could detect not a one. Even the slight jump-cut as ET indicates the closet as "home" is restored. The original ILM animation of the bikes in flight is back. The string passage during the final embrace is right where it should always have been. All the terrible tampers have been removed.
The transfer, from original 35mm elements, is as flawless as can be. The look and feel of the theatre experience fills the eye and the ear and, as always, the heart. Welcome "home," E.T., and thanks, Universal, for a job well undone.
