A boy finds a lost stranger left in the California suburbs, and learns his new friend is not from Earth. A strong bonds forms, and an adventure of discovery for both the boy, his family and there new visitor named E.T begins. It's mysterious in the beginning, but soon becomes funny, sad and fills your heart with love. Watch while Elliot (the boy) helps ET phone home and try to make it home before the government finds them all.

One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. It came out when my kids were small and we watched it together over and over on VHS. I didn't get tired of it like so many "kid" movies. I believe there are as many adults who love this movie as children. I was very happy to find it in an updated format.
The story is more complex that first meets the eye. It includes some teenage issues, divorce's effect on kids, and of course the hope that if we ever do have and extraterrestrial visitor that someone that is kind and compassionate will be our representative.
ET is a Halloween staple in our house to this day and yes, I still cry a little when ET says "come" and Elliot says "stay."
Introduce it to your kids or grandkids. You won't be sorry.

It really doesn't matter what types of movies you prefer. Every now and then most of us like to 'revisit' our favorites. This was one of the reasons why "ET--The Extra-Terrestrial" sat on my AMAZON Wish List for awhile. In spite of constantly listening to John Williams' excellent score, I wanted to give myself plenty of space before watching the movie again.

This BLU-RAY+DVD+DIGITAL+ULTRAVIOLET package is a High Resolution Masterpiece. And for the first time---7.1 Audio. So if your living room, den or mancave is state of the art, the DVD specs are considerably better than what was available at your local movie theatre.

Most of us know the story by heart, but in this anniversary edition many of the behind the scenes questions are answered. For example...how many of you reading this knew that Steven Spielberg was constantly pressured to do a sequel to "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind?" While 'Encounters' was focused on adult alien encounters, ET was targeted toward children. The fact that most grown-ups quickly dismiss the thoughts and words youngsters utter became the perfect set-up for a wonderful fairytale.

Best of all...most of the surviving cast members are still alive and have reunited to express their thoughts about the picture. Spielberg makes many comments and observations as well. Also included are deleted scenes, on-set footage, original designs about creature imagery and several other fascinating facts for film geeks like myself.

Overall...the DVD is great and this gentle story still makes me smile.

This is a review of the October 2012 Anniversary edition Blu-Ray. It is the version without all the added digital effects and still has the guns.

The movie itself is great. My kids both love it, with my youngest requesting to watch it again and again.

Picture quality is great. I watched on a self calibrated Panasonic plasma set and didn't see anything that made me think this isn't a good transfer.

I don't have a proper surround sound set up yet so I can't fully rate the sound. But using the sets built-in speakers it sounded great.

“Relive the adventure and magic in one of the most beloved motion pictures of all-time, E.T. The Extra–Terrestrial, from Academy Award–winning director Steven Spielberg. Captivating audiences of all ages, this timeless story follows the unforgettable journey of a lost alien and the 10–year–old boy he befriends. Join Elliot (Henry Thomas), Gertie (Drew Barrymore) and Michael (Robert MacNaughton) as they come together to help E.T. find his way back home. Now digitally remastered with enhanced picture and sound for its 30th Anniversary, E.T. The Extra–Terrestrial is “one of the great American films” (Leonard Maltin) that forever belongs in the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere.”
------------

E.T. arrived at a time when I’d been out of high school for several years but before the arrival of my own brood. As much of a classic as it is, and as much as I enjoyed it at the time, it really didn’t have the same initial impact upon me as it would years later when revisiting it with my kids. And now a grandchild is thrilled by it, which gives this feature a timeless quality. What more can be said?

This review is about the packaging of this Limited Edition Gift Set. As displayed in this listing, the box it arrives in measures 6.75” x 10.0” x 2.25” overall, contains one 6.5” plush alien – which looks fairly close to that pictured – and your standard blue translucent DVD/Blu–ray plastic “keep” case. All of the wonderful bonus content listed under Editorial Reviews is on the blu–ray. This is what you get on the DVD along with a few more details;

* Deleted Scenes (3:41 minutes)
* Steven Spielberg & E.T. (12:31)
* A Look Back (37:42)
* The E.T. Reunion (17:56)

I love this movie, I remember watching this with my aunt and uncle when i was younger and she had this E.T. statue with a red stone heart, I loved sitting by it while watching the movie, now that I am older with my own children I wanted to share the experience with them, they loved it! We all had same reaction watching the movie together, the laughs and the tears when we thought E.T. died.
This special anniversary edition includes documentary momentary from the creators of the movie, what lead them to make the movie to how they did make it, which is very interesting to watch.
This movie is great for children and adults.

I bought this particular version of E.T. because I wanted the original theatrical release to show my daughter. I'm strongly agains the practice of editing movies for later releases. I don't even know what all they changed when E.T. was rereleased but I know that I didn't want anything to do with it.

Best part? Sitting down and watching it as a family and having my daughter start crying when she thought E.T. was dead. It was so sweet and I remember feeling exactly the same way when I saw it as a child.

A word of caution here. You'll see other reviewers here stating that "this contains both versions of the film". Amazon is bundling all reviews for the E.T. DVDs together. ONLY THE TWO DISC VERSION CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL 1982 THEATRICAL RELEASE. The single DVD version contains the 2002 version which was infamously tinkered with by Spielberg.

Having watched the original 1982 version numerous times it was a bit of a shock seeing what was added/changed in this newer release. There are a handful of short scenes added from the editing room floor in addition to some very heavy handed modifications of E.T. himself using computerized graphics (CG). The CG isn't completely bad, and in parts improves the original film (the levitating "planets" and phone-building scenes especially) but other scenes when E.T. is frightened or experiencing some kind of drama Spielberg replaced the original E.T. with a CG version that moves and contorts its face in a manner completely different than the original (which was admittedly rather stiff and expressionless). Technically, they did an admirable job of fusing this CG version into the existing scenes, and kids won't notice the difference one bit, but adults could be bothered by the modifications and jumping back and forth between the CG and original versions of E.T.

I am absolutely blown away at the quality of the picture of this 30-year-old film on this Blu-Ray release! It's as if they went back in time with today's best digital technology and re-shot every scene with it. This may be why it took so darn long for this family classic to be released on Blu-Ray. They must have spent weeks on each and every frame of the original print/negative. OH, and while I'm not a big fan of the "gun scene" that was digitally removed in prior DVD releases, I'm totally against "censoring" a classic movie after the fact. That said, the "gun scene" is back in its original place as-is. Therefore, this movie is completely uncut and uncensored like ANY purchased copy should be. The cherry on the top is the included digital copy AND ultraviolet copy. It makes this movie totally portable for those long road trips.

I'm not going to review the movie itself other than to say it's a classic. My kids love it. I only gave it 4 stars because I hate the Redux elements and wish Spielberg would have left it as is. I don't mind so much when directors put in new stuff, but leave in the original stuff please (i.e. digital removal of guns).
