The T-Rules are made out of 10mil stainless steel. Unscrewing the knobs lets you remove the T-Rule from the base and use it as a stand-alone measuring rule. The thinness of the plate pretty much eliminates parallax error. The red aluminum extrusion has a rear ledge that the stainelss steel plate butts up against to ensure it stays at right angles when you reattach it.
My only suggestion (for Incra) is that the red right-angle piece should be a couple inches longer in the 12-inch version. You have to be careful when drawing a line not to pull the rule out of square with the edge of the board. That's never been a problem with the six-inch version. It is with the 12-inch, but this is still a five-star device. Don't abuse it and it should last practically forever.
Also, the accuracy is amazing. I've been a Metrologist for more than 30 years. I verified the accuracy of several of these rulers using an optical comparator. Each Incra ruler I tested was accurate to +/- 50 micro inches. That's much finer than anyone can see without magnified assistance.
You should buy at least one of these.
This product works best with mechanical pencil with 0.5mm lead. Fortunately, this is a very commonly available size and is available at any office supplies or stationary store. A scribe should work, too, but a conventional pencil will need to be resharpened frequently to fit the small holes.
There are two other lengths available. The shorter ones could be handy when the 18" length gets in the way of some obstacle. I originally bought the 12" ruler but found sometimes I needed the extra six inches. To do it over, I would get the 18" ruler, and maybe the 6" ruler for use when 18" is too long.
Others have remarked about how flimsey the ruler is. I have to agree. You must exercise caution when making marks and measurements. Pulling or pressing the square too firmly toward/against the work piece can introduce error, albeit slight. Also, using the square to mark an measure narrow workpieces where the square extends excessively beyond the edge of the piece can introduce innaccuracy as the ruler bends. If you can afford it, keep shorter versions of the square on hand for these applications.
Overall, great product, but 12 inch is too long unless you are doing bigger projects. It's easy to bend the metal ruler part because of how thin it is.
