Others said they had problems with the drain system. I haven't. I think I would have one time if I didn't fix it. When I moved the lever to the right I noticed the oil container came out a little bit. I moved the lever back to normal and re-seated the container. I then moved the lever back to drain, and it stayed put. No oil spills. BTW, you CAN move the lever as soon as you're done. No need to wait until the oil is cold. If you read the manual it tells you that it will drain when the temperature drops. Forget the exact wording, but I can tell you that is the case. Hot oil does not drain into the plastic.
Last some had issues with the power cord on some models. Not sure why a magnetic power cord is really needed. Sure it's some safety thing. But if you pull it so much that it's going to come off, the oil still will be burning hot. I don't get it... Anyway, I have not had a problem with it coming off at all - and I have moved the unit slightly while in use.
The one problem I've had isn't with the unit actually. My microwave and fryer are on the same circuit. I've forgotten that a couple times. The combined energy pull will trip the breaker in pretty short order. Like I said, not a fault of the unit, but something to think about possibly when deciding where it's going. In my little kitchen I don't have a choice.
This fryer arrived this past Saturday - I immediately fried some freshly cut French fries - I did two separate temperatures for the two cycles. I did this in a canola and peanut oil mixture. The oil heated up in mere moments. After the first cycle I raised the temp and started the second cycle - I removed the fries to a paper towel to drain. Now it was on to soft shell crabs - 2-1/2 min each side coated in rice flour. FREAKIN AWESOME!
Ok that worked. I set the basin to drain the oil. Three hours later it drained into the catch container, which was removed and placed in the freezer for the next use. I wiped down the element and tool the other remaining parts into the dishwasher. All clean!!! And now I have oil that I probably wouldn't have used again - but the system has drained and filtered the oil of crude.
According to the meter my oil is real good. I usually don't buy signature appliances because I feel that you're paying for the name not the quality. I highly recommend this unit due to its simplicity right out of the box. Buy it if you need a unit that has consistent temperatures and easy break down and clean!
UPDATE - 12/4/2013 - This system continues to serve me well. I have even reused the oil by placing the bin in the freezer. I decided after some time that it isn't a good idea, so I just transfer the oil to a plastic container for use the next time around. The whole system (less electronic portion) cleans up real well in the dishwasher. Again, I have recommended this to family and friends - my Jalapeño poppers are a hit as is my fried chicken breast since I have had this system.
