The trays are small, but for a compact steamer, it can hold a lot of food. I really liked how the runoff water stays separate. On my other steamer, the runoff water was supposed to stay separate, but it kept mixing with the steaming water, which made a mess, and made it hard to clean. This is very easy to clean.
And, the food it makes is delicious! I heartily recommend this steamer.
+You can see the water level from the outside
+Has 6 little egg holders on one of the trays
+Has a water runoff tray, so you can use the water for vegetable stock
+Works very well
-Very small for a steamer, but it's the perfect size for me
Well, I just received this today after my first order was lost somewhere (supposedly delivered). 5 Stars to Amazon for a quick replacement! Without having used the product yet (I'll update my review when I do) I find the look of the steamer very nice and the size just right! Not sure about the complaints of it being too small. It has a somewhat larger footprint than my old B&D steamer and the baskets seem as large or larger than the B&D which was perfect, size wise. I most likely won't use both tiers. I was slightly disappointed to find that it did NOT come with a rice cooking bowl as other reviewers said theirs did. Not that I often cook rice, but I did use my old steamer's rice bowl to cook whole grains and it did a great job. I will try using a Pyrex bowl as another reviewer said she did and hope it works as well. The plastic lid is sort of soft and I hope it holds up ok. I don't use a dishwasher as a rule, so maybe hand washing will keep it looking nice. I only recently discovered I could make perfect-every-time hard cooked eggs in my steamer (don't know why it took me so long to figure this out!) and for this alone, I will always have a steamer! If you haven't tried this yet, I encourage you to try it - especially if you like hard-cooked eggs but don't like the whole bring them to a boil, let them sit, plunge into cold water routine - THEN have to deal with eggs that may or may not peel without taking half the white with the shell. I've not yet had a steamed egg that didn't peel perfectly. You might have to experiment with the time depending on how you like your eggs. I used between 15-19 minutes depending on how many eggs (6-12) I'm making at a time. Well... off to the market to get some veggies to try in my new steamer!
I also love its shape, being oval rather than round makes it take up less counter space, leaving more work space in front of it and also means I can lay a whole fish fillet down in one piece rather than having to section it.
The bottom layer has egg dimples, which allow you stand eggs up while steaming them --- hard boiled or soft boiled this sends out perfect eggs everytime. ( 15 mins for a soft boil, 20 mins for hard boiled -- just make sure you have a bowl of cold water to drop them in when done)
The steamer has to water trays -- the base, which is where the heating system is, and where you poor the water . Then a second "catch" tray, this is brilliant as if you are steaming veg, you can then use the water to make stock . ( or its great to cook your rice in adds flavour)
Its a perfect size for one person or a couple if cooking a whole meal in it, or handy for a larger group if you just want to use it for your veg.
