The deal breaker for me, is the plastic used IN the device. I am not HAPPY about plastic being used on the outside of a food-preparation device, but that isn't a deal-breaker for me. But if plastic is used INSIDE a food-preparation device, I'm out. I don't drink bottled water for the same reason, plastic leeches into the water, that is a proven scientific fact. (How much harm that does to people drinking it, is still being debated). But, for me, plastic INSIDE a device that heats and prepares food (instead of ceramic, or metal, or silicone) is a deal-breaker. Non-stick ("Teflon"(tm))-type materials used in a food-preparation is also not something I want (that kind of material also can flake and leech into food).
So, yes, the device does what it says it does, and I would be rating it 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't for the materials they used in it. But, because they did use plastic INSIDE a device that prepares food, I cannot rate this higher than 3 stars. If plastic inside a food-preparation device doesn't bother you like it does me, then bump my rating up in your mind a star or 2.
The steamed fish with scallions and red pepper we did recently game out great for the first time we tried this recipe.
We are looking forward to make more healthy recipes using out T-Fal rice steamer./ cooker.
At first the size seemed small, even though it has a 20 cup of rice capacity. I am used to my huge Breville oval slow cooker. However, I easily fit 3 lbs of beef and roughly 5-6 cups of veggies and had no issues. All day it simmered along and made a great stew using the slow cooker mode.
The rice worked fine, I didn't have any uneven cooking or scorching. The steamer is a plastic insert that sits on top and steams. It functions fine, again, you need to watch your own times, although with the rice function is does automatically switch to warm when done cooking the rice..
One feature that never occurred to me to love but I do, is the lid. On regular slow cookers the lid comes off and is always drippy and steamy all over, the lid on the t-fal pops up and the steamy liquid just drips back into the stew, plus I don't have to figure out where to put a hot drippy lid.
easy to use
easy to clean (non stick insert, inner lid pops out)
performs multiple functions well so for someone with limited space this would be a good option
Lights showing machine being on are small and somewhat dim. I had to cup with my hand to see if the light was on
non retractable cord
The t-fal is affordable, functional, and would be a good addition to almost any kitchen
The key word is "basic." There is no timer function, no delayed start, no automatic shut-off, no high heat, no on/off button, no programmability whatsoever. There's cook and keep warm. The slow cooker cooks at low heat - low enough to heat but not high enough for a slow simmer.
For a basic unit, the T-fal performs well. The rice came out perfect, all the way to the bottom of the pot. My slow cooked meatballs were hot enough to enjoy. The cooker works well, just not a lot of options for slow cooking or rice cooking, but the all-in-one function just might make up for that.
I love that this product is also a slow cooker, and I need to find a time to try that function out. It's awesome that I was able to replace two appliances with this one.

Is there an easy access to clean the top vent? It could harbor microorganism after long use. Other than that, I have no problem with its cooking.Published on November 25, 2013 by Yusob69
So far, this item has done all that I've demanded of it very satisfactorily, though the bottom layer of rice does tend to get a little crispy... Read morePublished on August 5, 2013 by Peter Wilson
The only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because after it cooks the rice & switches to warm you have to unplug it to stop it. An on/off switch would be nice. Read morePublished on June 14, 2013 by Daniel Andres
