My BIOS at this time is 404 date 2/3/2010. I see an older version of the BIOS on the Asus update (401) but someone in the forum reports the machine won't downgrade.
The ASUS website and manual have almost no information on this unit at this time. It comes with bloatware that has been reported to be difficult to remove from the machine and registry.
Aside from a rather small right shift key, the keyboard is better than I expected. I will report more as I keep messing with this machine.
Biggest pro's: Battery life. I had 3 classes from 10 am through 12:15 requiring constant note taking. I was able to take notes without charging the battery. Perfect as a note-taking computer, this netbook is able to store an infinite amount of office documents on its dual 134 GB hard drive. Size is perfect! It weighs 3 pounds and actually replaced one of my books for the spring semester. Touch screen works very well, though I didn't use it as much as I thought I would. As a touch pad computer, it works very well. I'll use it to browse the net using firefox or read my books. Also, the netbook does not get very warm.
The con's: The track pad. After having the netbook for a week, I found that my thumb/palm would brush against the pad while taking notes in class. I ended up clicking all over the screen while typing. There is a track pad on/off function key and I turn it off while in class. But I also found about 3 weeks into the semester that the track pad did not respond correctly/cursor shakes erratically when my palm hovers over the track pad. So, I purchased a mini Logitech wireless nano mouse to use with it. Honestly I've never been a fan of track pads. The speed at which I can stream a YouTube or HuLu vid is pretty slow. I know that's not what this is for, but when I want to use this function, it does not work well. The netbook bogs down with multiple apps running. And if I accidently close Word or Excel, it takes 30 seconds to open up the file again. At the beginning of the day, I'll open all of my note pages in Word or Excel, and then close them after class. The speakers are not great at all; I end up using headphones while listening to iTunes or WMP. Also, the lag on the touch screen prevented it from really being useful for handwriting. Sometimes scrolling a webpage or document with my finger was a challenge, I used the built in stylus most of the time.
Battery life: Great when new! Now that it has run for 9 months I can squeeze 3 hours of note taking without recharging. I can order a new battery but probably not going to. I have plenty of time to charge it or seat myself close to an outlet in the classroom.
Durability: I've dropped it 2 or 3 times, but it held up (thankfully). Only a few bumps and scratches, no damage after hitting the concrete.
Keyboard: The chicklet style is great. I'm a big guy with big hand, and normally don't have a problem with the small keys. I wish the "pg up" and "pg dn" buttons were actual buttons instead of functions. Instead Asus added a function key right beside the arrow up/down/left/right keys that is awkward to use for fast scrolling.
Over all, I really like this machine. It is simple to use, extremely portable, and has a great battery life. This solution to a Windows based iPad did not work out as I had hoped. I really wanted something I could take good handwritten notes on. Out of the box, this netbook does not perform well for handwriting. Also, I find that my use demands a faster processor. I paid over $550 for everything to make this the laptop I'd use for 3 years of school, but I'm once again in search of another model. It served the purpose for my first 2 semesters at school, and I may continue to carry it with me as a Windows based iPad or a back up. For now, I'm considering the 11" HP Pavilion dm1z with a dual core AMD fusion processor (1.6ghz) for under $400. Though it's not a touch screen, I know that I can do without it for class.
<<UPDATE>> FEBRUARY 2013
After posting this review I found an older HP laptop (HP TC4400) It too was a convertible tablet, but it was manufactured as a business computer and required a magnetic stylus in order to use touch screen options. At one point I had some parts replaced and reverted back to the Asus T101MT for a week or so. During that week, the battery died. It will no longer hold a charge. I made the decision to order a battery from overseas. When it arrives I'll most likely put it up for sale. Wish it would have been a better solution, but then again I wouldn't have found the HP TC440. Very happy with it for the past 5 semesters.
First a little bit about me; I'm by no means an IT expert, but am very good with computers. I really liked this computer, but the touch screen was defective (more about that later). I have an Asus 1000H and this was supposed to be a replacement/upgrade for that. I use the small computer for school. Mainly viewing powerpoints, note taking, email, web surfing, writing papers. I'm a senior in nursing school. I wanted this computer so I could take notes using the touch screen to write my notes with.
First the good stuff.
Pros: General build quality: Seems well built. No flex noted anywhere. The screen hinge seems solid and holds the screen still in whatever position I want it. I really liked the matte finish. My 1000H is the bright shiny, glossy fingerprint magnet. This is sooooo much better!
Speed: This is a netbook so I didn't expect miracles from it. I have a very similar model (1000H). This computer was comparable to that. The only application that runs slow is the electronic text books. Everything else was acceptable. I didn't try viewing many videos with it. I expect that it will be acceptable with the movies I have on my other computers.
Screen: The screen was bright and clear. I didn't notice any graininess that I have seen mentioned in other reviews.
Camera: Didn't test it.
Speakers: Acceptable, I use earbuds when listening to music or watching movies
Keyboard: Wonderful. I really liked the "chicklet" type keyboard. I heard that I can get one for my 1000H. If I don't sell that computer, I will get this keyboard for that one. The keys are well spaced and very easy to type on. The right shift key is not convenient, but I'm used to that from my 1000H.
Touchpad: Acceptable. I'm not real thrilled about the mouse buttons though. It is one big button that pivots in the middle. I prefer two separate buttons. I also didn't like the chrome coating on the button. I'm not sure that it will last and stay looking good.
Battery life: Didn't have the computer long enough to test it.
Included stylus: OK, but I will be using a combo stylus/pen
Overall impression: Would have been a wonderful machine if it had a working touch screen!
Cons: Included software: Poor. I can't say enough bad things about the Windows 7 Starter included. I wish it had been shipped without an OS installed. I immediately installed Windows 7 Enterprise. The only software from Asus I used was the pen write and the super hybrid engine. Both of which seemed to work well. I will install either MS Office 2007 or 2010 and Open Office. The handwriting recognition worked great on the two inches of working screen.
Touch Screen: This is the reason the computer was sent in for warranty. The screen was impossible to calibrate. When I tried to draw a straight line from top to bottom (in landscape mode), the line looked like an EKG reading. This was using a straight edge. In places the touch input was off by over an inch! I tried calibrating the screen using a grid 50x50 pixels. That helped a little bit. In the worst places, the input was off by approximately 100 pixels. Even using large icons on the desktop, you never knew which icon was going to be selected. I then tried to calibrate using a 20x20 pixel grid. I still had errors. In between the 20 pixel squares, the input was off from 30 to 100 pixels! At best, I was able to get the left most two inches of screen to work. The rest was impossible to use either with finger or stylus input. I was unable to select menu items or icons reliably. In addition, there was a spot approximately 5 pixels in diameter just left of center where when the stylus passed over that spot, lines shot across the screen. In conclusion, I could have lived with errors of 1/4" or less on the touch input. Errors measured in inches were simply unacceptable!
The computer was sent off to Asus for warranty repair after having had it less than 96 hours. If I get a working one back, I'll edit this review or add comments. If I don't get a working computer, I'll be returning it to Amazon and take the $100 hit on an open computer return. I just hope I don't have to do that. I had high hopes for this computer and was severely disappointed that I got a defective product.
Ok, this is an update to my previous review.
I got it back from ASUS after about 30 days. They were unable to fix it and sent me a refurbished computer. I wasn't real thrilled about that, but the one they sent seemed in new condition. It had a small scratch on the front lid, but no other cosmetic drawbacks. It has a sticker inside that says it is refurbished and I don't get a full warranty. I immediately installed Windows 7 Enterprise (I will install Ubuntu Linux during the Christmas school break; don't have time during the semester to do it). I installed Office 2010 and OpenOffice as well as various other smaller programs. The only program that I had problems with was a Nursing NCLEX review software. The screen resolution is not high enough for that particular program (it runs fine, but some of the controls are off of the display. This would happen with any computer having this display resolution. The only ASUS software I used was the pen writing software. That utility is a requirement!! It allows you to rest your hand on the screen while writing with a stylus.
The big update to my review is the touch screen. It works and works great!! I only wish the first one had worked.
I have used the computer to take notes in class for a few months. I take the class handouts (usually power points) and print them into MS One Note. I end up with a document that I can add handwritten notes to. I do not use handwriting recognition for this, but merely write on the screen to take the notes. The computer works great for this. I am able to send my notes (email or USB stick) to my classmates. I haven't had a problem with this computer since it got back from ASUS.
The battery life is fantastic. It is even better than my ASUS 1000H. The computer will last all day long during a full class schedule. I start out with a few hours before class, then class, then homework. I put the computer to sleep in between classes, but otherwise it is on. I haven't tested it, but I would guess that I get over 6 hours of use in between charging.
I have optimized it as much as I am capable of. Cold boot starts are about 45 seconds from complete shutdown to working and able to input data. Start from sleep is less than 5 seconds with MS Office (OneNote, Word and PowerPoint) and Firefox open and running.
I highly recommend this computer for students with one caveat: Make sure that you purchase from somewhere that has a good return policy!! No Restocking Fees for defective computers, No cost to you exchange if you get a defective one, etc. If you check Amazon's return policies you will find that they do not offer this!
I originally gave this computer a 1 star rating due to it arriving in defective condition. I have changed that to a 5 star rating now that I have a working model.
