non-functioning and useless

Not only did the record function fail, it hissed and beeped, making noises while plugged in but not even playing a cassette. My third return to AmazonGo with similar items. I instead reverted to using my II older version of this product, since there seem to be no reasonably-priced cassette-to-MP3 recorders that function.

budget recording

I've been using this Tape2USB for about one dozen tapes so far and thought I'd post a review while I'm busy converting an old Screaming Trees tape.
It seems to do the job, but has several issues. First is that I don't like the hassle of the Audacity software, so I am using the EZ Vinyl Tape Converter software I got from a record player purchase. It's more user friendly and lets me just type in the album and track info. I still need to edit out the one track where I was flipping over the tape and finding the beginning of the next track. But I find that's easier than having to edit and than rename each track one at a time. It puts everything in iTunes.

I use Wikipedia to see the duration for each track and it helps remind me of how long each song is. I haven't heard a lot of these songs in over 20 years and those silent parts within the songs might make me start a new track accidentally!
From those times I can see that the player runs a little fast. Most songs are not nearly as long as the times on Wiki (or on the actual liner notes of the few tapes that include that info)and are usually about 8-10 seconds shorter. If a song is listed as being 4:20 long I will have to click on New Track at about 4:10 or 4:12.
I find it best to start a new song as soon as the current one has ended and not wait to see how long the silence between the songs will be.
Some albums have a shorter time between songs, which is when the Audacity software probably becomes more valuable.

I am recording with the "Play Cro2" button in the ON position, as without it on the tape seems too muddled.

This has been a much cheaper and easier way to convert all my tapes. My home rack-mount Sony tape unit had frozen up and a replacement would be difficult (few places sell tape players of good quality anymore). So I seem to be getting my money's worth out of this unit.
FWIW, I've seen tapes for sale at the big record stores for just $1 while used CDs are at least $7-9. I will try recording a tape version of a CD that I also own and see if I can tell the difference!

Worthless piece of crap.

The USB doesn't work, and the signal does not show up on my Mac. It doesn't work if I use the audio out into my stereo system either. Monitoring it on the built-in speaker, I found that the tape was not making contact with the heads, and kept cutting in and out. The one time I managed to get a signal into the computer, the signal was very low quality, carried some kind of mechanical noise, and was on only one channel. Audacity is a useless piece of crap as well. If you want to make digital copies of old cassettes, you need to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a decent cassette deck. Period.

I've been searching for something like this for a while now and, after reading all the reviews, decided on this particular model. The sound quality is good -- not great -- but it does the job of archiving all the cassettes I have. It took a few tries to figure out some specifics, but the instructions are pretty basic and easy to follow. It's still working fine after more than a month after countless hours of use and a drop from the desk to the floor. There are probably better products out there with a lot more options as far as "cleaning" up the sound, but for the price and ease of this item, I give it an overall 4 stars. It was a good investment.

Worked good; made cheap

This was the first one I received. It took awhile to learn how to use it, but after I learned it worked great; until the play button broke and would not fully release when I hit stop. I returned it within the 30 day period and received a replacement. When I downloaded the disc and hooked up the machine I started to record again. When I exported as WAV it screwed up the recording and what was transfered would not even playback on my computer or transfer to a disc and play in a CD player. I sent it back within the 30 days and am waiting to hear from Amazon at this time. I am still looking for a way to transfer my cassette tapes to CD.

don't buy this product if you want to use the usb connection

Before I placed the order I knew, from reviews, this product is not very good. But I'v never expected it can be that bad. As a player is OK. Also if you want to use rca outputs for external recording. But the whole usb part is useless. I could only get very weak signal from the unit (straight line in the wave graphic area of the software), not to mention all kind of interference when I moved my hand close to the usb port on the unit. I sent e-mail (the olny way to contact) to the seller, to ask what's wrong but till now I did't get any answer. In general, try to avoid this product.

Easy to Hook Up, A Little Harder to Master

The TAPE2USB Cassette to PC recorder was easy to hook up (plug it in and connect the USB cable, then load the software) and the included software loaded on my Windows XP desktop system without any issues. However, use of the software interface takes some time to master. The manual just gives you the basics and I had a little trouble figuring out the right input and output settings. After about 30 minutes of trying different settings, I had all the basic operation and settings figured out. I've converted three cassettes to mp3 files thus far, then played them back on Windows Media Player 11. Sound quality was acceptable considering that I'm only using the basic functions of the recording and sound editing software. I'm happy with the value for the price I paid.

I have quite a collection of cassette's from the 70's and 80's. Included are some rare b sides and some music I recorded myself in various bands. This unit worked beautifly with the Audacity software included to catalog all the various rarities unavailable on CD or for download. I can now listen to some rare and classic music I otherwise would have not been able to get anywhere else. I am very pleased with the unit.
