I bought this to start listening to my vinyl collection again. Using it to pair a Dual 621 TT with Shure M97xE to a Yamaha RX-V765 and Koss CM1030 speakers. The pre-amp is solidly constructed and has a good weight to it. There are four rubber feet on the bottom to protect whatever you place it on. The LED on the front is red, but not too bright. There is no way to turn it off except to unplug the power. I used the supplied 3' RCA cabled to connect it to the receiver. Make sure you connect the ground wire from your turn table to the pre-amp. If you don't do this correctly you WILL HEAR 60Hz HUMMING. The gain knob feels very solid when rotating. I did not hear any crackling or other noise adjusting the gain while playing an album. I ended up leaving it turned all the way up. From what I can tell, the non-adjustable version is exactly the same as this one, except the gain knob is shorted (default max gain). Like others have commented, I bought the adjustable version just to be safe. In hind sight, I didn't really need it and the fixed output model would have worked for me. The 12V DC power adapter is a very small switching power supply. Inside the pre-amp (yes I opened it up), there are two, 1000uF capacitors in parallel that filter the DC input. With the pre-amp inputs shorted, I turned my Yamaha amp all the way up and didn't hear any noise... ZERO. Once I connected the turn table, and repeated the test, I heard a very slight humming, but that with the volume maxed out. In reality, with music playing that loudly you'd never hear the noise. Not scientific testing, but I'd say the advertised S/N ratio of 85dB is close. Again, keep in mind that is with the pre-amp inputs shorted... so I was just testing the pre-amp. This way if I do hear noise, I know it is coming from either the turntable, wiring, grounding, or cartridge and NOT the pre-amp.

I'm no audiophile and I think a lot of audio gear is overpriced hooey. You can find phono preamps between $10 and $10,000, to fit any budget, but for my $50, I'm perfectly happy with this guy. I've got friends with $250 Bellari and Pro-Ject Phono boxes and they MIGHT be 'better' but I'm going to chalk it up to their better cartridges and speakers.

I've got a Pro-Ject Debut III turntable and a bottom-of-the-line Marantz A/V receiver and this product does its job perfectly well for my taste. I don't have a "golden ear" but I love music and this TCC is quiet, sounds better than the built-in preamp in my old stereo, and is making me happy I didn't spend a lot more for something immeasurably 'better.'

Feature-wise, the "Gain" knob is extra circuitry, sure, but it's great because you can balance the output to match the output of your other channels, so you're not twisting your volume knob all over when you switch to 'phono.' Glad I got that. The component itself is roughly half the size that I pictured it in my head, which is great because I can just tuck it behind my turntable and forget about it forever. (maybe someday I'll need to consult the RIAA curve drawing, ha) If you're the sort of person that buys audio components to impress your friends, look elsewhere. If you just want your turntable to sound righteous, this is your preamp.

Get's the job done...

There was audible low level hum, I could not hear it over music though (this may not necessarily be the fault of the preamp itself, this may be more environmental, it is very hard to say in an analog system) it took me awhile to get to a point of being unnoticeable, the power supply provided is cheap and doesn't push the preamp to its best potential.

There are by far better preamps out there but this gets the job done for $50 and that's why I bought, because it was inexpensive and simple, and had decent reviews.

The preamp on my new Onkyo TX-8020 just sounded weak. An earlier Yamaha (which I returned) was even worse. This looked like a nice, inexpensive alternative, and I thought I'd give it a try. I have never used an outboard preamp.

First, as is so often the case, it came very quickly, a day sooner than the earliest date mentioned in my shipping e-mail. Second, the thing was packed like nuclear waste. All was perfect when I opened the box.

I had it up and running in five minutes, using the TAPE input on the receiver. All I can say is that it has made a HUGE difference. My records now sound like they're supposed to, and like they did with receivers I owned many years ago when phono capability was a priority rather than an afterthought. There is no noise, no static, no hum, no nothing -- except the music.

I kinda wish, like others, for an on-off switch, but that's a minor quibble. This is a fine product at a great price.

Preamp easy to use.

Nothing to it. Simple to install, set input level to get proper reading on sound monitor dial on the computer screen, and played records.
I don't know to what extent the preamp is responsible for the quality of sound so I'm not rating it for that.
But for final version - converting vinyl LPs to CDs - result is not perfect. Certain instruments record well - piano, woodwinds, etc. and voice.
Violin is OK but a little fuzzy, and bass is not good. On one pop record it sounds like a thumping - very indistinct.
The preamp feeds into a computer program which makes the recording on hard disk. When recording is done, the computer program burns the recorded sound to a CD. Sound while records are playing and recording seems good. Wasn't aware of any sound problems there, so it may be in the computer recording and burning.
