On my next tv I wanted to go big. And big I got. I purchased the TCL 65S517 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Roku Smart LED TV (2018 Model). I did a lot of research before making this purchase, both on line and in stores. Seems as though all big screen tv's of all makes have their version of a quality picture display. Hover, this TCL model, in my opinion rivals any of the high price models on the market. I'm not a tv techno expert, but I know what I like when I see it. This model, for it's size displays an excellent picture. Oh, did I mention it is big. I sit about 14' from the screen which for me is a good distance. A lot of reviews talk about puny speakers in these large screen tvs, but to me the sound is great and plenty loud if I need it to be. I may add a sound bar with sub later for movie viewing later on, but with the settings built into this model, I am able to make it sound pretty good. I am well pleased with my purchase and also the way it was packaged. The box and the way it was packed inside was amazing and kept the tv safe and secure. For the price, this TCL tv is a great buy if you are looking for a large screen tv for a budget price. I can't see anywhere TCL cut corners in putting together this unit. The bezel is even made of metal and extremely small. When viewing the tv you hardly notice the bezel is even there. That's the way I like it. Buy one, you won't be disappointed.
My background: have used the same 32" flatscreen for about 5 years, TV was given to me by people who had used the TV for several years before me. Finally reached the point where watching movies on it in the living room wasnt doing it for me.
When deciding on this TV my process was to first go to walmart and target to compare picture and screen size. The TCL model each store had was the 2017 model of this TV, which still looked fantastic compared to the other bargain TVs (element, vizio) and I honestly couldn't tell a remarkable difference between it and the $800+ models of higher end brands.
I went on Amazon and filtered everything I wanted in a TV (55", 120hz refresh, 4k, price under 500) and both the '17 and '18 TCL models were included in the final lineup of 5 tvs. The 2 TCL models were both the highest/most rated tvs on Amazon in my final list, and after comparing the two model years I went with this newer model for the Dolby vision, better contrast, and darker blacks based on reviews.
Compared to what I've had for years, I am blown away. I currently have the TV mounted on the wall with a Mounting Dream fully movable mount, and it looks like modern art above my fireplace. The picture is beautiful, I have watched several fast paced shows on Netflix, SNL broadcast over the air, some children's movies, and everything is clear and crisp and b-e-a-u-tiful. No lagging or pixelated images, with 2 clicks you can go from energy saver mode to normal mode for daytime sunlight viewing (or if you want to light up the living room in the evening...)
Sound is fine for what I need currently. I downloaded the spotify app to the TV and played music over my phone - cranked it and I could jam anywhere on the main floor. No crazy bass but I didnt expect that without first buying a soundbar kit of some kind. Future purchase.
THE APPS. Setting up the TV first time plugging in is super easy, remote is streamlined to no more than 15 buttons I believe, 4 of them being quick keys to highly used apps (Netflix for example!) I used a wired setup since my router is right there on the mantle and I want my TV to have the preference when divvying up the 12mbps service I have currently. Downloading apps is quick and easy, and there are many to choose. The Netflix app is beautifully done, and the spotify app makes it so easy to beam music from your phone to your TV.
The remote is a smart/magic remote that has a voice control button. I've used it and it works great, however it wont go directly from one app to another from a command. For example, you cant be on broadcast TV and ask it to play stranger things on Netflix and expect it to start playing. It will run a search for stranger things in all your downloaded apps (with Netflix being the top option since you mentioned it in the command) and other options listed below, and you will have to select the Netflix option. Once within apps it's completely responsive, ask it to do something in the app you're already in and it will do it no other clicking needed. Neat neat!
Overall great TV for my money. I cant imagine spending more, im super happy, and I don't see a need to pay more unless durability over time comes into play, which I will add to/edit this review if anything like that comes up.
Initial review 7-4-18: Just got it today, so this is an initial impression. Replaced a ~6 year old 50" LG Plasma. Great picture on the plasma but it faces a sliding glass door, and finally got sick of the really bad reflection during the daytime. The reflections on this is much less. Delivered in good condition. Easy setup. First thing I did was to get wireless connected and run some YouTube screen test videos. Zero edge light bleed, no banding, don't notice any dirty screen, haven't noticed any dead pixels.. Connected to the Comcast cable box, and to an OTA antenna. Scanned for the OTA channels. OTA looks great. Tweaked the picture settings as follows:
Revised settings 7-28-18: Had picture mode originally set to Movie but found Normal to be better. Normal can produce really flushed faces unless the color setting is turned down - but also produces the sharpest most accurate picture in my opinion. Note: I believe these setting are pretty much the default settings except I turned down the color a bit.
- TV Brightness: Bright during mid day, darker at night (2 easy clicks to change) - or just keep it on Normal. * This TV is more than bright enough for bright daylight viewing. Saw some complaints that it's not very bright. It's more than plenty bright! - Picture mode: Normal - Audio effect: Theater (sound's not that bad - but by no means as good as a sound bar). I also have it toslink connected to an older 5.1 Denon receiver - sounds great). - Backlight: 100 - Brightness: 50 - Contrast: 100 - Sharpness: 0 - Color: 42 - Tint: 0 - Temp: Normal - Micro Contrast: Low - All other setting turned to Off (noise reduction, etc.)
Love the picture coming over cable, antenna, and streaming. HDR on YouTube is stunning. I mostly use the TV to watch Cable TV. Don't have any streaming subscriptions. The picture is very clean, sharp, accurate color, deep blacks, etc. No complaints. Getting around Roku is a snap, and changing settings and all is very intuitive. So far so good, and it is the best TV I've owned. Price is great for what you get.
I programmed my One for All universal learning remote for this TV and duplicated the Roku remote perfectly except for the 4 subscription buttons (Netflix and all) which I could care less about. 5 digit code is 11756 (the same code needed when setting up the Xfinity/Comcast remote).
* I really wanted the 55R617 but I was scared off from the high % with vertical banding issues and didn't feel like playing the screen lottery. I'm glad I went with the 55S517, and saved $175.00 in the process. 7-28-18: Still love the TV. Can't compare to a high-end OLED, but I really don't need to. The picture quality, the price, and everything about the TV is all I need.
For the price, it's very good. Shipping was a day late, but Amazon gave me a credit for that, so all is right on that front. It has an outstanding picture quality. Comparing it to 1080, it is definitely worth the upgrade. With 1080, you can still tell you're watching television. With this, it's more like looking out a window. The picture quality is so clear and life-like, it's very nearly a 3D image. Without exaggerating, there are scenes where I've gotten a bit of vertigo from them because of the image quality. It also does a decent job of upscaling other non-4K media. It doesn't upscale to true 4K media, but it's somewhere between the original format and 4K. The built in speakers are ok. They sound like TV speakers, a bit hollow, but ok. They are definitely not on the same level as, say, a good home theatre surround sound system. I have it connected to my sound system and it does pass all sound formats, including Dolby Atmos, making it a good choice for home theater. It's very thin and lightweight. Mounting it was very simple. I like to play PC games on it and it works well for that, at least at 1080p, with no noticeable lag.
The bad: Though it does a decent job of HDR, what I've noticed is that with Dolby Vision, on darker scenes, it darkens the entire screen, so it tends to lose some contrast in the darker areas that way. There is also a bit of misinformation on the listing. In the product details, it claims to be a 120Hz refresh rate. It is not, it's actually 60. It also doesn't work well as a PC monitor at 4k settings, but does work very well at 1080.
Overall, there are better televisions out there, but you are going to be paying considerably more for them.
