Initial impression: I purchased this fantastic radio for trips to the beach, BBQs in the back yard, camping and for having tunes just about anywhere that I desire. It sounds absolutely fantastic, I am not at all an audiophile but I have always had the latest Harmon Kardon receivers at home so I do appreciate good quality sound. let me tell you this stereo can get loud! I was elated when I plugged it in and turned it all the way up the first time, It got an immediate "hellz yea!" From me. It comes with a thin antenna that you push into a small double pin in the back so that you can receive over the air FM and Am stations. I get horrible reception in my back room so I don't get too many stations but the ones I do get sound clear and the tones (High, Low, Mid ) sound spot on. It has a piano high gloss finish with coper-goldish knobs. the LCD is well done with channel and input displays, you also get the EQ balance reading on here. I think the main colors for the LCD are orange(EQ feedback display) blue (input selected) . The preset buttons are touch sensors so everything except the knobs and speakers are flush on its face. this thing loves finger prints. the handle has a smooth rubber on the bottom where your fingers wrap and feels sort of silky, the bottom also has this same sort or rubber. I would probably not put this boom box under direct sunlight so I will be looking into a sort of veil or umbrella to protect it from the sun. There are 5 presets that you can program by long pressing at a station you like to program the individual preset. You have touch sensor buttons on the face for Aux, Radio, USB and Instrument. The knobs feel tight without a hitch so I hope not to run into the same problem that some have had of the knob slipping, conscious of this problem I purposefully turn the volume up and down slowly to try and not loosen the connection.
Flexibility: one way I use this is with the Miccus Mini-jack RX: Bluetooth Music Receiver, I have this plugged into the 3mm jack and just pair it with my tablet and BOOM I have Bluetooth. On a side note I also purchased the BT receiver on amazon, I use it all over the house. I also bought the Galaxy Note 8 N5100 on Amazon, this thing is fantastic for being online, reading the Kindle app, and pairing it with the Samsung All Share Cast Dongle for movie viewing on the big screen. I stream music from YouTube and Pandora on to the boom box and it sounds great. I also have my TV audio out hooked up to this via the RCA hookups, this is my bedroom TV, and it gives the TV a richer and boomier sound. Only thing is you have to control the volume at the knob. I have not used the instrument hook up, I'm not that artistically inclined.
Portability: I like the fact that it runs on batteries and I will be testing the portability out this weekend at a BBQ at a friends house. One thing though, It is heavy. I feels sort of around the weight of a midsize tool box. it has balanced weight though and the leather belt strap is very chunky and elegant. When you throw this over a shoulder the sturdy leather strap distributes the weight well and you don't feel encumbered at all. The leather on the strap is smooth and the clasps to connect it to the boom box feel sturdy, they are chunky push-click clasps. I think the leather strap with the goldish-bronzy colored clasps makes this look that much more classier than just any old stereo or bt speaker.
All in all I am extremely happy with the quality and will get daily use out of this. If you are considering this or the A73, so was I, and the thing that sold me on this was the FM AM radio, I just get tired of listening to my songs on my tablet and its good to have the flexibility to tune into air waves after 5 6 hours at the beach, not to mention that sometimes you just don't have good data reception on the coast to stream Pandora. the only things that would have made this better are more presets, rechargeable battery with indicator, more EQ settings than just treble and base, and some sort of UV dust protective cover. But for what I paid ($100 with an Amazon gift card to cover the other $80) I feel you would be extreemly hard pressed to beat this with any other portable radio, or just BT speaker, this sounds just so dang good!
I bought this as a gift for my wife. I considered a BOSE or CAMBRIDGE tabletop unit, but decided I would opt for something she could take poolside or on weekends to our small cabin. This radio looks gorgeous on granite kitchen counters, wooden bookcases, on top of the piano, on a desk, anywhere. Pre 1970, radios were made to look like furniture that would fit virtually any decor. Once things started going solid-state, manufacturers tried to make everything look "futuristic". Most modern radios are loaded with silver plastic, faux chrome, and redundant or decorative knobs, speaker grills and the like. Why on earth would I ever want to have something like that on display? This thing is a throwback (think Tivoli model 1).
Sound is exemplary. SO loud and CLEAN. I've tried it with a thumbdrive, iPod, and FM tuner. All great. No hop from the woofers, no clip from the tweeters. It sounds as good as any BOSE, without needing the counter space for the circuitous porting.
With its leather strap, minimalist style, hidden function indicators, and outrageous sound, I consider this to be the best dollar-for-dollar value in the portable audio market.
I would also second the advice to turn the volume on your iPod to zero, and turn off the iPod EQ.
I couldnt be more pleased.
