The sound just "booms" out of this boombox. Spectacular bass. Good highs too. Clear as a bell. Loud, loud, loud.
Incudes: 1) An FM wire antenna 2) An AM loop antenna 3) An A/C power cord 4) And I guess an iPhone usb cable (I don't have an iPhone).
Yes, there are two tweeters at the center of the speakers.
The hole in the back - it's a subwoofer and it is SWEET!
When you turn the unit on it takes 3 to 4 seconds to "boot up".
The equalizer only gives you bass and treble adjustments. Not a problem for me, when using my mp3 player, I use the eq in the mp3 player to fine tune the sound.
The leather strap is easily attached and removed. We prefer it off unless we plan on taking the boombox for a walk.
The exposed speakers are vulnerable to poking damage - TDK chose style over function here.
There's an indentation on top for your mp3 player with a rubberized surface to keep it from sliding around - nice.
I kind of wish the carrying handle folded back out of the way to better access the mp3 player we sit on top but having it fixed in place gives the boombox a stronger feel.
How we play karaoke: Get a karaoke song (mp3+G) on your smart phone which doubles as the lyrics screen and plug it into the 3.5 mm "Line In" jack. Plug in a microphone into the "INST" input on the side of the boombox. Hit both the "AUX" and "INST" "buttons" and sing away! To increase the microphone volume but not the music volume, just turn the volume down in the smart phone / mp3 player while leaving (or turning up) the volume of the boombox. Or vise versa as you desire.
On a minor note, you can't use the 3.5mm "Line In" jack and RCA jack at the same time. 3.5 mm Line In jack is Aux 1 and RCA jack is Aux 2 and they're on the same "Aux" button that you toggle through. For us that means we can't play mp3 (3.5 mm Line In) and our electric keyboard (RCA) together. So we can do mp3 and microphone or keyboard and microphone but not mp3, keyboard and microphone. Not a big deal, just FYI.
Incidently, it doesn't appear that you can use the USB input together with the INST input. They didn't work together for me but I DID NOT have a device connected to the USB port at the time. This would mean no microphone (or other instrument) with USB input.
Overall, we're ecstatic with this purchase. We have a spectacular boombox and a karaoke machine too.
Update: I've been putting this boombox through its paces with my new Lecrae CD and WOW - it just explodes. No problems with the boombox whatsoever and it sure does an artist like Lecrae justice.
The sound is very good for the most part (more on sound issues later) - It's loud enough to sound full and musical even outside in the open... my friends and I were standing around playing catch with the boombox 30 feet away, and it was still loud enough. Its definitely a walking party with this thing. Don't expect thumping bass outside, though. Indoors the bass is plenty to fill a room - outside it dissipates (but this is expected; would need a massive system to do any better)
Now there are a few issues that show how this sweet device still needs a second revision to be perfect - firstly; there is a buzz when there is a note at 100hz (half volume and above). I noticed it first playing "U2 - exit" the right speaker buzzes. You can test it with a speaker frequency test. I took mine back to get it exchanged, but found that all of the units make the same buzz at 100hz. Its unfortunate and annoying, but not bad enough to make me return it.
Secondly, when my iPhone is connected with USB, there are little "tick" noises ever second or two. It sounds a lot like a vinyl record clicking and popping - annoying. AUX input is clear and fine.
Oh and THIRDLY, and most stupidly; the battery cover tabs break instantly. The first time I opened up the battery compartment I noticed how small the tabs were. And as soon as I tried putting the cover back with batteries installed, one of the tabs snapped. The door seems to stay on fine because the screws on the top side are quite beefy - but very annoying nonetheless.
If just these above minor issues were fixed - I would give a 5, nay a 6 to this awesome device.
Oh and removable speaker grills would be fantastic. I am very nervous a wandering finger or football will find its way into the cones.
Function wise it does more than you'd think: I like that I can plug in my iPod (and it has a charging station) or use a thumb drive. The radio reception is first rate. I do wish it had built in antennas (they plug into the back). It has a touch interface that's cool and easy to use. It's a bit heavy but it comes with a nice looking strap and has a handle. It's portable, but just.
Most importantly it sounds fantastic. Now am I going to stack it next to stereo system costing several thousand? No. But I'd say you are getting more than your money's worth for the price. And it can put out some serious sound for it's size. Haul this to a beach party and you won't be disappointed. All in all a great piece of equipment.
