All of my life I have admired the "Method" actors referring specifically to those that incorporate Affective Memory (reliving past experiences as a means of accessing emotion) into their work. Ever since Stella Adler came back from Paris saying that the master himself (Stanislavski) no longer approved of affective memory, which ended up being a misunderstanding on her part, the actors, in my opinion, have simply not been the same. Their work looks a little "light." The majority of the actors now-a-days use something called "Method of Physical Actions" as a means of accessing emotion, which means that out of the pursuit of a predetermined objective, they will experience real feelings that will be parallel to those of the "character." However, what do you do if you have a close up shot in a movie and all the other actors have left and you are are all alone needing to re-do your scene? Where is Meisner then? How can you get emotions from the pursuit of an objective off of a person that is no longer there?
As of two days, I ran into something called "Alba Emoting" which promises the immediate access of ANY emotion on demand. The beauty of this approach is that it gives one back the control over one's instrument that had not be seen since Strasberg! The possibility of being able to design a character from scratch including emotions at any part of a play or a script, and then deliver it with authenticity, becomes not only possible, but Safe and Efficient!! And this, my friends, is a revelation beyond anything that I have ever seen. THIS IS THE FUTURE OF ACTING. Just as a painter can access any color with absolute precision and paint a canvas, with Alba Emoting, so too will an actor be able to access any emotion anywhere, anytime, and with ease. This is brilliance.
About this book:
Laura is a very experienced Acting teacher at a very reputable university. She is also a high-level teacher of Alba Emoting. What I found extraordinary about the book is the application of Alba Emoting to the world of acting, organized in a very accessible and practical workbook-type format. She not only teaches you Alba Emoting, but gives you the tools you'll need to apply to your work as an actor.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK not only for beginners but also for the seasoned professionals looking to have total control over their instrument.
