Buyer beware: the "SET TO WIRESIZE" guide has no numeric markings. Stripper is rated for 10-24 gauge AWG; (24-9) = 15 values, but there are 11 divisions on the etched ruler, so your guess is as good as mine what they mean. The locking screw that prevents too much stripping is also simply a philips-or-flat screw backed by a hex-nut, so you'll need additional tools to set the wiresize. Setting is not convenient therefore; I'd recommend this tool for projects mostly involving one size of wire, but it'll be a pain to be constantly resetting for other sizes.
I usually only purchase tools after looking them over first, I haven't had to do this with amazon.com, until now. These have been thrown to the back of my workbench where I will never see them again and I shall be looking at the amazon.com pictures much closer, and I will be reading the reviews much more carefully looking for a replacements for these. If I get another pair of non-cutting cutters again I will never buy cutters from amazon.com again. 73
It is possible that I received a a defective pair, but why would I want to trade out for another if if the quality testing was shotty to begin with.... Returning these and going with another brand.
When I tried to use the tool to cut lengths of wire, I bent it such that the jaws no longer come together properly (perhaps this was a mistake?). The sizing is clumsy, especially for wire this heavy. Perhaps as a result, after a dozen or so tries I haven't been able to strip an end without taking a few strands of wire along.
I don't do this kind of work often, so I'm sure some of the blame is on me. But still, I can't recommend it for an amateur or for working on heavier wire (even in its supposed range).
This brand of strippers also worked as well as I expected, at first. But after one day of use cutting coax cable and stripping ground wire - maybe 20 or 30 cuts - the blades were dull and the head bent enough to simply bend the cable instead of cutting it.
I expecially like how easy it is to both cut and strip without using different parts of the tool.
The wire size guide is relatively useless (based upon looking at it and reading other reviews, I've never tried to use it), and I really wish there was a way to keep them locked closed, but these things are to be expected at this price range.
