It does tend to crush the filter housing slightly and can even puncture the metal so this is for the REMOVAL of filters only. Of course, if you are using a wrench to install oil filters, you are over doing it - hand tighten is all they need.
This has a channel-lock mechanism with three stops. At the SMALLEST stop, I measure a gap of 3 3/8" between opposing teeth with it closed as far as it will go. At that size, it's not going to get much of a grip on a stubborn 3½' filter, if there is such a size. Forget about using it on a 3" filter.
This is going to fit my truck's filter, but NONE of our cars, whose filters are only 3 inches in diameter. Check your filter size. If it's less than 3½ inches, you need a smaller wrench. Even AT 3½ inches, go for the smaller wrench; it will get a better bite..
That said, it seems well made. It has a nice heft and the teeth look like they'd get enough grip to either get a filter loose or tear the cover up. It still just sticks in my craw that the description wasn't more accurate. Maybe I can help someone else avoid the same mistake. (I CAN use it on one vehicle, but didn't really NEED it for that one. Given the price and hassle of returning, I'll just keep it; maybe it will come in handy someday.)
At first I wanted to give this wrench a one star because all it did was puncture holes and chip away the filter with its teeth grip. I even purchased and tried using the chain wrench, but even that didn't work.
My last resort was the messy "screw driver into the filter" trick, but even that just cut more into the filter and not unscrew it.
I then gave this wrench one more time WHILE in combination with rotating the screw driver for double leverage and it FINALLY worked! You have no idea how happy I was to finally get that annoying filter out!
Another problem with this wrench is you need to make sure you have enough room to work with because of its large size, it can make it really difficult to turn in the position that you want.
I do like TEKTON as a company because they stand behind their products.
In come the Tekton 12-inch oil filter pliers. I've acquired a few Tekton tools via Amazon over the years and have always been pleased, so I went with them again this time, and yet again I'm pleased. These fit around the Mobil 1 oil filter (M1-204) perfectly and I think could handle oil filters even a little bit wider in diameter than this one, and I suspect this one's on the middle to upper end of normal vehicle oil filters. I had to squeeze so hard that the filter started to crush, but this was not a problem and in fact allowed the pliers to REALLY sink in and twist without slippage. Finally, the filter started twisting off. Woohoo! Now that I own these, never again will a 20 minute oil change turn into a 3 day adventure..
I have a Nissan Frontier and the oil filter for it is behind a small access door, above the front axle. There is very little room (without removing the whole belly pan) to remove the filter by hand, especially if you have larger hands.
I originally bought a 3/8 drive socket filter wrench, but with the small amount of working room I just couldn't get it to work. This set of pliers had the filter off in seconds.
It does deform the filter, so you will need to have enough room to spin the new filter on by hand. Luckily I do, so I can use this tool every time I change my oil.
Highly recommended if you have enough working room to manipulate the handle for this tool!

- Comfortable to use
- Provides better leverage and grip
- A little large. Depending on where your oil filter is, these pliers may not have enough room to be used.
