I have one complaint. My waist is 32 inches, but I have the waist belt cinched tightly. This is kind of concerning. You can lose weight during a long trip and may not have a lot of room for adjustments. If you have less than a 30 inch waist this probably won't work for you. Fortunately, I have a 30"-31" waist when I am working out regularly and doing a lot of cardio, so it should be fine for me. Unfortunately, my recent workouts are limited to carrying a baby throughout the day and heavy reps curling 12oz IPAs:)
I'll update my review if I run into any issues after three days of hard use.
UPDATE 02/07/2018: The pack held up like a champ. It was extremely comfortable. The waistband and shoulder straps felt great. My only wish is it were a pound lighter, but it’s just fine for me. I can’t justify paying double the price when I don’t have the chance to hike long distances regularly. I’m very glad I bought this pack!
1 - The top hood doesn't fit over the bag (like it does in the product photo).
2 - The inside diameter was a bit tight.
3 - The bottom pouch was difficult to access, due to the design of the bag.
4 - The straps on top of the bag sit a little far back, making anything that's strapped to the top (if it has weight to it) feel like it's constantly falling off.
However, after packing this thing to the brim, plus some added weights (prepping for a big hike coming up and was trying to over compensate for food and such), it held up incredibly.
1 - The top actually works as a satisfactory cover, as long as you don't expect it to snugly pull down over a full bag. Since every square inch of this thing is made for storage, I'm filling the pocket in the hood with a ton of stuff and it still does its job.
2 - This is something that still might be an issue. I WAS able to get my HUGE sleeping bag in and out of it, but I also upgraded to a smaller mummy bag and it fits significantly better. If you're a big person, that uses a big sleeping bag, especially one designed for colder weather, be prepared to struggle packing everything, even with compression bags.
3 - The bottom pouch zipper is significantly easier to use when it's full, so make sure to utilize every square inch of this space.
4 - As for the top straps, it's pretty easy to get use to, especially if you're only putting a light sleeping mat up there. I have a pretty light weight tent that I've rolled up and strapped to the top, which can get annoying if you're spinning around a lot and the top hood isn't full, but otherwise it's solid.
Overall, this bag has an ENORMOUS amount of space; I have enough extra room to pack my tent as a "just in case" option, for a trip where I'll be sleeping in shelters along the trail. It's also surprisingly comfortable, even with the added 10-15 lbs that I packed into it, I had no problem with weight shifting or this bag throwing me around. The only big drawback being how slim the interior is, but I think that can easily be worked around. 4 stars, because I think this bag doesn't quite knock it out of the park for me, but is definitely super solid.
I have had it for about half a year and it has worked great. I hammock camp and this pack has held every thing that I want and more.
What I like about it is that it's very comfortable when packed up all the way, it doesn't hurt at all.(I carry a lot)
The sleeping bag compartment is perfect, I use my Teton sports leef +20 and it fits great.
I would highly recommend this pack.
Top international reviews
I've used two MEC packs i paid a big price for. I also tried an external frame pack last time.
I got so fed up with the MEC packs i gave each away after a while of use. The external frame, after a five day hiking trip i hauled to the curb and left it. It disappeared thankfully.
So i am fed up paying big bucks and poor results. But i needed a pack. So i said may as well not waste any more money.
Was i surprised.
Great adjustments for torso length. I got it to fit better than any pack ever with the adjustments.
Great padding on shoulder straps.
Load lifters too.
Hip belt padding actually is long enough to go around my hips (other packs often dont), 42 inch waste for a big guy like me (250 - I'm thin at 220). Awesome plus.
Only design flaw. Water bottle pouches on each side of the pack. When side pockets are filled they hang out over the water bottles. Very hard to get out. Can't get a bottle out while walking. Can't reach it anyway even if you could wrestke it out.
Have to take the pack off. Stupid if you ask me.
So i use a hydration bladder.
But i hiked 10.5 km late last night and i am telling you I was reminded again that this is the most comfortable pack I've ever owned. And the quality of the materials is as good as any brand pack I've owned. Its not an "ultralite" pack.
But it works.... and the price. Wow! I'll never ever spend 250-400 for a backpack again.
At this price they are disposable. When it breaks get a clean shiny new one. You can but three or four packs for the price of other brands and you'll have a new bag that doesn't look like crap...
Just get it. There is no risk here.
Swallow the ego. 95% of people don't need $200 - $300 packs for the hiking they do. Hikers are mostly weekend warriors, a few of us are the odd 3-5 day trip, not long-distance hikers like the Appalachian Trail. We can fall into brand MARKETING and envy to ring more money out if you.
My 2 cents after wasting thousands of dollars over the years.
Only thing I have found annoying is that if the bag is full then the rain cover struggles to cover the full bag! If you have extra bits attached to the outside then there is no point trying. Other bags I have had give a lot more extra material to compensate for this... I have considered looking for another rain cover for this bag!
Bag is great apart from that :-)
The straps were comfortable, thickly padded etc. The pack held up great.
Some notes based on some of my own observations and those of other reviewers: the sleeping bag compartment: yes, the elastic zipper shroud IS a bit annoying, but it's manageable -just be patient and go slow. My sleeping bag wouldn't fit- even stuffed- but it's an older synthetic fill. I'm using the compartment for other things, and was able to stuff a 4 person tent body (no fly) into there. I've since ordered a smaller lighter tent , so now I use it for a very compact green sleeping air pad , blow up pillow, and pretty sure I'll get my new down sleeping bag stuffed in there as well.
Complaint: my hip belt seems to be sewn off-centre a bit. I don't think it affects performance however, and didn't feel the difference during my hike. I also wish the belt had pockets, and that the daisy chain continued up the back higher (again-I need to get leaner/lighter and not lash as much outside anyways!), and also that the brain (the blue topper) was adjustable (expandable higher ) to use the top most drawstring area AND lift the top higher to also put a pad or whatever horizontally , between it, and the main compartment.
The rain cover is a fairly snug fit from the bottom to the brain of the bag. It fits with side pockets bulging full, but lower-than-bottom and higher-than-brain and items lashed to the outside will probably need to be removed/won't be covered by the rain cover. It's not oversized by a lot. Use a poncho I guess... I luckily haven't been rained on yet on my 2 weekend trips out with it.
The pass-behind pockets were one of the main deciding points of design for me. They are very useful for anything long like poles/tools.
The mesh pocket on the back seems kind of delicate and too small/tight for much, but it holds a flattened folded tarp/plastic bags very well.
I don't have much to compare this bag too, but thus far I'm extremely pleased with it, and for the price it's a good deal. As MY other gear improves, so does this bag's ability to hold it all.
Having used the bag now on both several times, I am extremely happy with the purchase. The bag has held up extremely well. It hasn't torn and the zippers still function. I hadn't realized it came with the rain cover but found it tucked neatly at the bottom. Very handy!
My Platypus water bladder fits very well inside. It is a 2 litre bladder, but you could fit a larger one as well.
If my pack disappeared tomorrow, I would buy the exact same one again. Yes I know that there are other bags out there that are better, but for this price, I haven't found one that works as well.
I liked the overall reviews and design. It arrived timely and was put through a thorough once over by me.
We then took it on a multi-day (4 day) back country (Purcell Wilderness Conservancy, BC....Earl Gray Pass Trail) hike. A very rugged hike, with zero trail maintenance. I fitted the back to my wife's size and she packed 42lbs of gear and food.
The first thing we noticed is a squeak in the shoulder strap/torso adjustment, located between the shoulder blades and at the back of the neck. The constant shifting of the pack, as we walked, caused the nylon strap to rub across the horizonal height straps. My wife was going crazy with it. After trying some talc (to no avail), I tightened it across three bands instead of the standard two. It stopped the squeak, but needed to be tightened again every 5km or so.
Also, with that weight of pack, the hip and waist belt needs to be snug against the body, so that the pack and person move as one. Problem: the waist belt began to tear at the back pad. Something that can be fixed with a sewing kit but shouldn't have to happen. That type of failure in the field could have been catastrophic.
The rest of the pack worked well. The rain cover was a blessing. The size of the external pockets made getting to the small essentials easy and quick.
I'm torn between recommending the pack and condemining it.
