About the Author

Mat Dry obtained his safari-guiding credentials from the Field Guide's Association of Southern Africa in 2007. He worked on Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa for six months and then decided that he wanted to see more of Africa. In 2008, he joined one of Africa's premiere overlanding companies, Africa Travel Company. For nearly four years he worked with ATC as a guide in both East and Southern Africa until deciding to create his own company, TIA Safaris. Mat now divides his time between educating people about Africa in the States, and taking clients on the trips of their lives into the Africa he knows and loves. You can contact Mat through TIASafaris.com or its phone number, 1-602-561-7823.

I joined one of Mat's safari groups in May 2010. Those 4 weeks were the most unforgettable adventure of a lifetime. Reading Mat's book felt like I was right back in Africa. I have never met someone so incredibly passionate, fearless and amazed by the wildness of nature. A true explorer and story teller.

Mat's book is a fantastic insight into the wonderful and wild experience that a safari in Africa can offer. His stories are together funny and witty, exhilarating and scary, heartbreaking and personal. He captures the rawness of each experience so candidly. Mat's honest and compassionate nature shines warmly in his writing.

Thank you Mat, this was such a special read. I hope to be back again on the truck one day soon!

This is a wonderfully written book that combines a lot of information about African people and fauna mixed with entertaining vignettes of being a safari guide with all kinds of anticipated and unanticipated experiences.
While I am past the desire to camp in places where one has to check if there is a lion nearby before venturing to use the latrines, I know that, if I ever were to find myself in a dangerous situation, I would want Mat to be my guide! His passion for the land and its animals, his love of nature, and his enthusiasm about sharing his experiences are contagious. One feels like he is there, actually "seeing" with the eyes of the imagination the elephant or the rhino charging, or the snake hissing nearby, and "hearing" the cacophony created by different languages and cultures, as he travels through very diverse African countries.
In the end, what comes through most strongly is Mat's passion and excitement for everything beautiful in nature that our planet, and Africa in particular, can still offer us.

If you have ever dreamed of becoming a safari guide, this book is for you! Mat tells of his tales and tails in the early stages of his new career in a most humorous and uplifting fashion. He teaches us what is really going on in the head of that cool demeanor of a guide on safari in Africa. I could not put the book down.

This book was written by my now friend. We originally met when I was on my trip in East Africa. Matt, the author, was our guide. What an unbelievable experience...Africa as well as Matt. He now owns a touring company which introduces people from all over the world of what Africa is all about...and let me tell you, Matt is the very best of the best. Very knowledgeable about ALL. If you every have the opportunity, contact him and take one of his tours...I guarantee you will not regret one minute of it.

This is Africa, True Tales of a Safari Guide.

This is a fun read for anyone who has been on safari in Africa, or anyone curious about what goes on behind the scenes in the life of a safari guide. Mat Dry recounts anecdotes, some humorous, some that give pause, of his life as an American working as a guide in South Africa. His love and respect of The Bush and his passion of introducing clients to the wonders of African wildlife makes the reader wish every guide were as conscientious as the author. I like how he lets the reader in on his dealings with the people he encounters. From a client who is having a horrific reaction to his malaria drugs, to a man named Yusuf who rents a hamburger so that Mat will give him some money on Zanzibar, Dry takes the reader along with him as he wrestles with the challenges each situation presents and the unique methods he must use to resolve them because, as he says, "this is Africa."

This book will also intrigue anyone who is thinking of a career as a guide in Africa. If this is your dream, Mat shows you how you can do it, even if you weren't born in Africa.

Mat shows emmence caring for the animals and the passengers on his trip that carries over beyond the ordinary. This is a special person doing special work. He has immense technical knowledge of all of Africa's flora and fauna but what makes this book different from the average guide book is taht Mat allows us to live through the very colorful internal and external interpersonal situations that the trip and Africa conjure up. This is a very interesting account of Safari life on one level but on another level shows how all of the world is interconected and even a new visitor to Africa can easily become one with the exciting drama of life on this magical continent. I am sure there is no better person to experience Africa with then Mat.
