Do not purchase the multiformat, code has expired
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019
I purchased this movie in the multiformat mode in order to get bluray, DVD and ultraviolet, when I tried to redeem the code, i received a message that the code had expired over 5 years ago. May as well save the $3 and just purchase the discs.

Not only does it remain as faithful as a two and a half hour movie can to one of the best spy novels of all time, but it paints a delicate portrait of spy craft at its most dangerous. Weaving a narrative through time like lace, the story doesn't so much unfold as it does drop lightly from the puppet master's hand and only when it reaches the floor do you realize what's happened. Even then, you marvel at the complex investigation Smiley (by far a better spy than Bond ever could be) puts together. It might take a viewing or two to understand just how George put it all together and untangle the mess of relationships and lies right before you. Some call it boring. Those people don't really like spy movies. This is not Bond or Bourne or other fanciful and bombastic movies filled with impossible gun fights and explosions. This is slow and deliberate and thoughtful. The cast is perfect and though Oldman is not Alec Guinness, he makes Smiley his own and equally brilliant and dangerous.

My favorite espionage film!
Director Tomas Alfredson crafted the ultimate slow burn spy thriller. Whispers and traitors are around every corner in this Cold War tale that is chilling. The crystal clear shots and cinematography transport you to another time. The period accurate outfits and makeup create a verisimilitude to the time.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a thoughtful take on complex spy narrative. Filled with political intrigue if you are willing to follow along. The music from composer Alberto Iglesias wrote the most beautiful and understated score for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. There is sweet jazz and lots of delicate piano melodies to listen to while you watch.
Notably, the acting from the entire ensemble is excellent and nuanced. You get the greatest Gary Oldman performance in his career as the ever observant spy Smiley. Oldman's use of his eyes and face to act make for a rather understated role, but he is brilliant all the same. You are constantly wondering what he is thinking. It is a master class in reserved acting.
Furthermore, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy give their most reserved acting showing their versatility. Colin Firth, John Hurt, Simon McBurney, David Dencik, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, and Stephen Graham all deliver intricate performances to put you off who the mole is really. Svetlana Khodchenkova has a nice smaller role as a Russian informant that you will undoubtedly sympathize with by the end. All in all, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is well cast down to the smallest role.
In short, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an espionage film like no other. Clever and twisting through the spy world. You will certainly have to think to understand this well written plot, but the process is enjoyable to the end. I love this film and I hope more viewers will get the opportunity to experience it.

It's wonderful but hard to follow, there are so many things going on. It seems they are trying to find a mole. There is a lot of talking and moving from place to place. You watch a man put his briefcase somewhere in a building , because they make him check it and a half hour later you don't know why . At the end of the movie they play the song in French" somewhere Beyond The Sea" which is the third time ,in as many movies , we have watched in a row with this song by Bobby Darin. The first movie was Beyond The Sea.What unbelievable synchronicity. After you watch this movie , you will want to watch The Americans series.

Well if you've wondered how can you make a dull, undramatic movie about Russian double agent spies, this is the way.
I can't understand all the good reviews as I was bored to a near catatonic state by this movie. Every performance employed the "whisper for dramatic effect" technique. It was if the director said "do not show ANY emotion" to all the actors.
The plot was confusing to the point of not caring anymore after 30 minutes or so. Boring, tedious, a waste of 2 hours.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy perfectly takes you into the world of mid-cold war espionage. Its the early 70s, and the two superpowers are at a stand-still. Past the heated early days of the cold war where Russia and the US were racing to gain a territorial or weapons advantage. At this time the lines have been drawn and it has set in that both superpowers are roughly equal in terms of military power. This is the long slog. A time when a mild manored and good wwii vet can make a difference.
The plot is simple. A mole has made it to the top of the British intelligence service and it is one of four people. It is the job of our hero George Smiley to determine who. But throwing out accusations against top level civil servants is something that can not be done lightly and George will only come calling when he has the man red handed. If it was a matter just of guessing then anyone could do it. Only a man of his temperament and skill could accomplish this and that is why the under-secretary has tasked him with this mission.
I think a word of caution, everything is on the screen... but don't expect to see it. This is a world of nuance and the clues don't jump up and down and say here I am. This film isn't a who done it. The question is why, and when you know why. The actors become more clear and a soft spot In the plan becomes visible. Push the right buttons and the mole will reveal himself.
That being said if you expect to 'figure it out' this movie will simply leave you frustrated. I don't think that you really have a chance of understanding the whys unless you have read the book. The fun of this movie is watching George do his job masterfully.

A good couple of hour's viewing for Oldman
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2018
From the perspective of someone familiar with the book and original television series it turned out to be a superficial but nevertheless entertaining skim over the source material. I suspect it is infuriatingly (or boringly) incomprehensible to anyone hitting it cold, as it were. A good couple of hour's viewing for Oldman, Firth and/or Cumberbatch fans, anyway, though Guinness remains the spycatcher nonpareil for me.

at less than £4 what's not to love. Great movie - despite all the negative reviews saying it isn't like the book - this is an enjoyable view [if a bit confusing at times] and the quality on the BluRay is excellent.

Decent film but noisy picture in HD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2015
Reasonable Film & I think everything that's been said here already has merit, so I`ll just comment on the picture quality:
I watched the blu-ray version of the film and what was very noticeable was how noisy the picture is which would be due to upgrading from a less than HD quality film stock, so I would advise buying the DVD version where that noise should not be apparent.

This is the third time I've bought this film, but I love it so much I was prepared to. The first was on release on DVD. The second was in the limited collector's edition DVD / BluRay set, complete with soundtrack, book, behind the scenes photos and film cell. That's a lovely package but too big for the shelf.
Awesome thriller with an impeccable cast, housed in a stunning steelbook. What's not to love?
