And it does feel a little cheap in the handle as the handle is a bit floppy but they have it priced at such a great deal i am completely satisfied with the purchase and am enjoying the tool.
I am, however, unsure about the longevity I can expect from it. During the sessions where I have been using it (crimping several connectors to 4AWG welding cable each time), I have had to clean away drops of the fluid seeping from the pump piston. The drops are fairly small, but they are enough to easily stain things, and I would rather not have random fluids dripping around. I do not know how many crimps it will be able to make before it runs out of fluid, but it still served well through the most recent batch, with no hint of impending failure. I leave it with the control knob in the 'open' position to hopefully reduce internal pressure on that piston, and have not seen noticeable seepage with it in storage, so that is a relief. I do not expect rapid failure due to this, but I do expect eventual failure due to it.
Since the price is good (less than I probably would have had to pay someone else to take my cable and my connectors and my heat-shrink tubing and attach the connectors to the cables), I can't fault it too far, but it is worth taking some off. It still looks worthwhile for occasional projects based upon what I paid, and I am expecting it to last through a few more sessions.
Is this a true 10 ton crimper? No, not even close. I’ll give it 4 at best but I don’t have any real means of testing. If you knew the diameter and stroke of the pump and ram and calculated the pump arm ratio, one could figure it out but that's time consuming. Is it well made? No, but not a huge no. For the Amazon asking price, it’s a pretty good deal and if you only need it every so often or for one specific project, you’ll be ok. If you need a crimp tool for a job site or expect to use it a lot, move along, nothing to see here. The dies also have no internal mark that will leave post-crimp imprint on the lug so it cannot be used on any work where an inspection will take place.
With that aside, this crimp tool works well for what I’ve used it for, replacing lugs on 1/0 and 2/0 welding cables. I’ve dropped one star because it is being sold as a 10 ton crimp tool, which is not really possible and the storage case. When the tool is placed in the case, the full weight of the tool rest on the control knob. To me, it looks like something changed on the tool and they never updated the case. For that reason, I store mine upright, in the vertical position so it’s not resting on the knob. So far, no issues with the tool.
UPDATE: I couldn't leave this alone so I did some calculation using my T&B for reference. In order to achieve 14 tons, or 28,000 lbs at the head of the T&B crimp tool, you have to put 84 lbs of force on the handle. This was calculated using a pump handle ration of 21.5:1 and a ratio of 15.49:1 through the hydraulics. In order to achieve 10 tons or 20,000 lbs on this tool, you would have to place 162 lbs of force on the pump handle. With a more conservative force of 40 lbs, you will get 4,919 lbs at the head, or 2.5 tons. This was calculated using a pump handle ratio of 11.18:1 and 11:1 through the hydraulics. So it's a 2.5 ton crimp tool, which sounds much more realistic.
I did a few crimps and they turned out acceptable, see pics. Also a size comparison between a true 14 ton crimp tool and, so called, 10 ton tool.
The one less star is that initially you would pump it until you could not. Now it seems to keep going which tells me it might have a leak. Not quite sure. Will update the review if it gets worse or fails.
