As far as the difference in the product from what is pictured, the hangar brackets for the one I received look more substantial than the ones in the picture of the product. The picture has a single piece of metal vertically, a bolt through the hanger and the roller mounted on the bolt. The one I actually received are much like others I've seen on Amazon where the hanger goes up and over the roller and is bent 180 degrees back over the roller creating a "U" shape over the top of the roller. There is a bolt that goes through both sides of the "U" shaped hanger and through the roller itself, creating a much more substantial hanger than the one in the picture.
The hanger and roller rides smoothly on the track bar. Once we received the connector, the installation of the doors was a bit of a challenge. We purchased 8 ft solid core doors that probably weigh in at over 50 lbs each; so, I wanted to make sure that the weight would be supported correctly. We had to cut down the doors at the top and bottom to fit the installation which in the pictures (installation manual) calls for a door just over or the same as the height of the opening. Our doors are significantly larger thus they presented a few more challenges. I installed a 1 x 4 over the doorway to aid in supporting the weight of the doors and to ease the installation a bit since there very little chance that the holes in the track bar will match your wall stud pattern.
The included expanding inserts for mounting into wood are for use with wood that is thicker than a 1 x 4 (3/4 in) and didn't grip in the wood. I ended up removing them and opting for "t" nuts driven into the back of the 1 x 4. This took some trial and effort and ended up being considerably more work than I initially expected because of the unique situation.
Once the track was securely mounted, we ended up with the doors being about 1 inch too long. I removed them, cut the tops more, plugged the original holes with dowels (which is fully covered by the brackets) and remounted the doors successfully.
They now work like a charm and provide a definite "wow" factor to the room! So, would I recommend this hardware? Yes, but you need to know that with the pitiful instructions, you're going to be pretty much on-your-own to figure out any non-standard installation. Do they look nice? Absolutely. Would I purchase them again? Probably, if I had a double door opening. Would I do things differently? Maybe drill my own holes in the rails for my stud locations so I didn't need additional support instead of mounting on a wood base plate.
I hope that my details helps someone in their decision about purchasing these!
As many have said the product is well made heavy steel. The instructions are a single page, front and back with photosonly. The page is black and white and blurry. Very hard to see and even harder to understand the exact measurements. With better instructions this product would get a much better review. I was able to figure it out however it took much longer than normal.
Just a quick update, kit did not come with splicer. I bought the 12 foot kit for just that reason, to splice them together. Very frustrating
So, how come I gave it four stars? When I was done with the installation, I really liked how the product looks. Nevermind the nits, which most people don't see.
Its a great product just be prepared to do some math calculations to convert from Metric to Standard.
