Truly beautiful images but AF was really bad at times on my A7rii

I received this lens today and took it for a test drive. The images were amazing. The images were also super sharp and wonderful bokeh. Now the sad part, on my Sony a7rii, sometimes the AF would stop working. But if I turned the camera off and then on again, it would start working again. Other times, if I switched it from AF-C to AF-A and then back again, it would begin to work again. I guess for normal portrait work, one could live with that, but sometimes I would use it for everyday activities. My Sony 85mm 1.8 is always accurate with the AF and I don't miss a shot, but I love the images on the Tokina better. But sadly, the AF is very important so I had to send this beautiful lens back.

Wonderful new addition to my collection of primes

I originally wrote a rather scathing two-star review of this lens because the copy I received was defective and pretty close to unusable autofocus wise. What I didn’t know at the point I had written the initial article was how amazing the Tokina support staff would be to work with.

On informing them of the issue I was having with AutoFocus, they immediately started trying to replicate the issue in their facility over in Japan. All this - in the height of the initial outbreak of coronavirus. They worked diligently and were able to quickly determine that the issue was with the copy of the lens I had received. They sent me a new copy free of charge that was personally checked to ensure it was in flawless operating order.

So when other people say why go with Tokina when there are very similar lenses for less my answer is do if for the support. Tokina genuinely seems to take pride in their products and they stand behind them 100%. That’s worth a lot.

And speaking of value, this lens offers an excellent value in terms of cost to performance ratio. It will give you 90% of the top end prime performance for 1/3 of the cost - creamy bokeh, sharp rendering across the frame, and build quality that rivals much more expensive optics.

The autofocus performance is exceptional and just falls of the fastest 85mm lens I’ve ever used. Eye autofocus works comparably well also.

In terms of overall rendering quality, this lens lends a neutral balanced classic look to the images it produces, making it an excellent choice for black and white photography and giving you a lot of headroom for working with color photos in post.

At the current price point you really can’t go wrong. And it’s great knowing you’ve got 3 years under warranty to back you up should you need it.

Bad autofocus

I really wanted to love this lens but the autofocus is pretty bad.

The lens is very sharp and the autofocus is silent but It tries to focus within about 1 second, if it does not gain focus within that time it just gives up and takes the picture without the camera confirming focus. Sony lenses will at least hunt back and forth until it gains focus.

The other major issue is that is freezes the camera. when the camera is frozen all buttons are unresponsive and the only way to fix it is to remove the battery. I'm afraid it will permanently damage my camera (A7ii)

I've tried the Sony 1.8, Viltrox 1.8, Rokinon/Samyang and this Tokina destroys them all. Less CA, very fast and very silent focusing, very sharp. This lens really has it all. The Viltrox was good, but not as good as the Tokina. The Sony, I'd guess is about half the weight of this and much more compact. The Sony also has a custom button on the lens which is nice. I plan on keeping the Sony because of the 2 features mentioned, and for a light carry-around. However, for sharpness and build quality this Tokina takes the cake. I was really impressed but the build, silence and AF speed. I'd highly recommend.
