My plan is to mount a Sony HX7v P&S camera, which will do the video, on top of my Nikon D5000, which will do the still pictures.
By using this adapter it should be possible to do that. First operational dry runs have indicated that a) the connection between the two cameras is solid and steady, thanks to the two screw nuts that fix the adapter very tightly; and b) that the combination of the two cameras, while certainly a bit clumsy, heavy and strange looking, is fairly easy to handle after some time; and c) that I have no idea how to operate this monster in the tight spaces on the sideline of the sports event.
But for the adapter - it does what it should do, seems very sturdy, is well manufactured, is of metal and although I find the price a bit high for such a simple low tech item, I am grateful to have found this little device. Beats mating the two cameras with duct tape everytime ...
The build leaves something to be desired, however, as it seems that the hot shoe is just slightly too large on every camera I try to mount it on. It fits, but only after I'm almost scared of scratching the flash contacts. It never does, though. The wheels, on the other hand, do come loose. They're not locked on, and they will loosen in the middle of a shoot if you disturb it too much!
But, for the most part, if you use it like I do (mounting and H4N, lights, mics, and other accessories to a small DSLR and video camera) you'll appreciate the value of this little bugger. However, if you're a professional, find a solution that'll stay locked during your shoot.
However, as time has gone on, I've found that this bit has allowed me to mount all sorts of screw-mount gear (cameras, strobes, etc.) onto flash brackets, tripods, and even table-top stands in ways that otherwise would have cost big bucks.
Furthermore, it is a rock solid piece of gear, and can handle the (terrible) way I treat my gear some times. I am ordering more as I can't seem to live without them!

EDIT: 10/8/2013
After trying this product again, I have had no problems with the threading (changed from 1 star to 4 stars). Not sure why it originally wouldn't work for me, but now it works great, just what I needed.
