Product Description
Opiate2 is a special limited edition package, that includes a reimagined and extended version of the TOOL classic track. The song is presented on a blu-ray DVD that features a ground breaking short film directed by Dominic Hailstone. Bonus features include insight and observation from special guests, and this blu-ray disc comes in a special 46 page hardcover art book that includes behind the scences and making of photos.
The song was originally released in 1992. TOOL have been performing this version of the song live on tour, but this is the first time the studio version of this song is available, along with a stunning visual in a commemorative package.

Update:
Okay, so I received my copy a day ago. Watched it several times and let it all soak for the night. Once again, Tool delivers, both aurally and visually.
The music? Wow! It's still the original song in all ways, but with Tool's refined sound. It's what you would expect from them if this was a new song on a new Tool album. Maynard's voice is impeccable, as always. Danny's drumming once again demonstrates why he belongs in the pantheon of drumming gods with the likes of Neil Peart, Jon Bonham, and Keith Moon. Adam's guitar playing, while never proficient in technical skill, shines in his creative use of effects, feedback, and volume swells. Justin's bass playing is absolutely on point and goes beyond Paul D'Amour's original work on this song. It's everything you want and hope for from Tool.
The short film delivers just as much punch as the music does. Adam Jones was heavily involved in its production, as he always is with all the visual elements of Tool's body of work. Dominique Hailstone co-produces the video (along with Adam and Charlie Mather), and he also takes the Director's chair. Not sure if this is the first time Hailstone has worked with Tool, but he has done videos for Mogwai, Isis, Lustmord, (if you arnt familar with those bands google them NOW, you owe it to yourself!) and other bands you should definitely check out, good stuff. Here too, it's everything you want and expect from a Tool video. It's thought provoking, unsettling, and you will want to take a shower after watching it to rinse away all the leftover creepiness. Regarding the commentary for the video, you won't get anything out of me here, no way, not going to spoil it for you. It's not what you expect, but man is it a treat! Loved it, loved it, loved it!
The packaging is in the same vein of the slimmed down, more reasonablely priced Fear Inoculum packaging. Glossy hardback with cloth overlaid spine. High quality semi-gloss paper with sewn binding. Stills from the video and behind the scenes pictures. Full credits on the last few pages, and a cardboard sleeve attached to the spine for storage of the bluray. Very nicely put together and excellent quality. This is what you are paying for, the packaging. Cause let's face it, otherwise you just hop on YouTube and watched the video and listen to the music then go about your day.
My take on it all together? The whole thing is on point, from the production to the packaging. Much better than thier previous video releases with the exception of Salival (remember the Lateralus DVDs? 🙄). Is it worth $30? No, but I paid it anyways, just as they knew I would. Buy it from Amazon, it seems the price has dropped to $25.
Just one last side note. I know alot of people like to lay the blame for Tool's short comings at the feet of Maynard. Honestly, I think the guy is probably as frustrated as we are with the lack of remasters, unavailability of thier albums on vinyl, the long waits between albums, the overpriced everything, etc... IDK, if I ever meet him, I'll ask him. But let's face it, it's a group effort. It's four guys with thier own agendas and projects outside of Tool. I'll take what I can get, when I can get it, and pay whatever I have to to add it to my collection. I can't blame them for my own obnoxious, completist collector's obsessions.
Saw Tool live with my usual seeing Tool live friends. Halfway through the set, they play Opiate. I'm happy about this. About 2/3 of the way through the song something happens though.
The song erupts into a violent fit, akin to a 3 year old hopped up on Frosted Flakes on a Sunday morning who throws a fit when mommy says "put down the toy, it's time to go to church".
Seeing / hearing this reboot live was a total brainfk. When it ended my friends and I literally looked at each other like "whoa". An arena full of melted faces. A few weeks later they announced this release, and it does not disappoint!
