Let's not waste time--this London band's debut is one of those stunning albums that just grabs
hold of you before the first song is over, and never lets go. Immediately accessible and naturally
inspiring with a fascinating celestial sense of dramatic flourish, these are soaring psychedelic
pop/rock tunes with trippy wave-fluffs of guitar & keyboard that swirl in and out of gorgeously
driving, candy-coated rhythms. From the sugary voluminosity of epic pop/shoegaze songs to
mesmerizing strobe-light instrumental passages to engulfing motorik hypno-beats, this is an
irresistible, broad-spectrum album with instant and lasting appeal. Musical styles reference
many bands, including the Horrors, Tame Impala, Neu!, Spiritualized, Psychedelic Furs, Ride,
the Teardrop Explodes, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Low Frequency In Stereo, Sonic Youth,
Cluster, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Baby Woodrose, the Cure.
This is an album I can listen to again and again...and again, truly exceptional!

This is a great packaged deal!!! Get the vinyl album plus the cd version.!

I heard Toy for the first time at a live show in the Twin Cities. The venue was playing their single "Left Myself Behind" between band sets. I liked what I heard: a mixture of The Cure, Joy Division, A Clockwork Orange and the psychedelic sounds of the 60s-70s.

The next day I impulsively bought the vinyl album. In about a week it arrived at my local post office. To my surprise I realized "Left Myself Behind" was a single not featured on this Toy record!. However, this didnt stop me from enjoying the album and discovering other songs I like.

To make matters better you can sign up to be on Toy's email list and get the "Left Myself Behind" single as an mp3 download. So things worked out in the end I have a great album with several excellent sounding tracks plus two free tracks I can enjoy in mp3 format until I buy the viny version.

**Review originally appeared at https://midnighttosix.wordpress.com/

I’m usually excited by British bands playing atmospheric guitar-heavy rock songs, but this London group just isn’t doing anything for me. Their self-titled debut album tries to occupy the same space that Interpol, Doves and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club inhabited so well a decade ago, but they don’t have the tunes or the chops to pull it off. If anything, they remind me more of The Horrors (a band I find shallow and meaningless), but Toy singer Tom Dougall’s voice doesn’t even leave a lasting impression like Faris Badwan does. In fact, his sleepy monotone leaves no impression at all. I can at the very least credit Toy (and producer Dan Carey) with making an exceptionally well-produced album; one which has all the guitar effects and synthy atmospheres you’ve come to expect from the genre. But where’s the passion? Where’s the personality? Where are the songs that get helplessly stuck in your head and demand to be heard over and over again? Not here.

This is a great record start to finish. The singer sounds a bit like post Floyd Syd Barrett when he was singing baritone mostly. Vocals are drenched in dense layers of trippy effects which I happen to love. The guitar bass and drums sound like Sonic Youth when they were at their best except the chord progressions lean more towards the "pop" side. The other odd thing about this album is that the best track is the last track. Get this album you will enjoy it.

This is a shockingly good sounding first album.

Thank God - *finally* - for a new, young band that - although influenced by shoegazer/Krautrock bands of recent decades - sounds futuristic, sophisticated, powerful, atmospheric, rather than the recent dirge of pretend "indie-rock" groups that really just sound like a generic wave of "folk-revivalist" "neo-bluegrass" comedy bands. Thank God.
