    Advanced router with huge potential
    5 Stars
    Advanced router with huge potential
The AD7200 from TP-LINK is a highly interesting looking router that isn't just about aesthetics as it's just as striking on the inside as it is externally. This is likely the most advanced wireless router on the market at this point and supports a plethora of features, some of which you might not be using anytime soon, though, but still great to have as technology is always advancing and this router will be relevant for years to come, while many cheaper routers are left obsolete and replaced. The first thing you'll notice is that this router is fast. Whether your on 2.4GHz, 5GHz, or 60GHz, you'll notice improvements if you're upgrading from an older router. Whether it's the 9 antennas (1 is internal for 60ghz) or the multiple MIMO or the beamforming technology, compared to my previous routers, 2.4ghz the delays are noticeably reduced which means the time it takes for pages to load is noticeably shorter. There are bottlenecks with internet and wireless (your service only provides so much speed and 2.4ghz only allows so much speed) but this router gets you the most out of what you have.Another aspect of the router that that certainly has an affect on it being so fast is the 1.4GHz dual core processor. You won't overload this router with traffic, it'll easily handle whatever you throw at it (I tired HD streaming on multiple devices, torrenting on multiple devices, tons of connected hosts, etc and it never had any noticeable lag and never crashed). The 60ghz feature is something I'd not even heard of and was unable to test unfortunately but I took the time to research it and it appears similar to the 5ghz upgrade that came out in the past in that it offers much better speeds at a cost of range. The reality about wireless is it's not steady or predictable. The materials your home are made out of, the size of your home, the amount of walls and doors, the thickness of those walls and doors, etc can all affect the wireless. In my home I've not had much luck with 5ghz, it's certainly faster but I occasionally will get connection drops. That's not a fault of this router, it's an issue I've had with all routers due to the size and design of my home. According to what I've read the 60ghz feature requires line of site to the router. So you'd need to be in the same room as the router with the device to take advantage of it. If I had this scenario I'd imagine I'd run a wire to the router instead and take advantage of the gigabit networking features, but some mobile devices do not have any adapters to connect to ethernet, so this is a feature that could potentially be needed by some. The router also has two USB 3.0 ports that can be used to share a router or hard drive. Another potential use is to charge your phone with it or any other device (I personally keep a raspberry pi I use for adblocking hooked into mine). The router gateway is easy to use and TP-LINK actually provides a mobile app (TP-LINK Tether) which makes it even simpler to play around with your router and observe what's going on .The gateway does seem to miss some features I've seen in other routers though, like the ability to view signal quality, router noise and internet traffic. Hopefully features like those can be added in future updates (one update was already available which I installed at launch - I imagine more updates are too come). You can also turn of and on the leds of your router from the gateway. Not a feature I'd ever use but I tested it out and it certainly does work.Overall this is a fantastic router. It essentially supports all wireless tech available on the market and some that's still yet to come. It's fast, has a great design, and provides a plethora of features.

Looking for a router to cover all of your wireless gadgets? Does your family home/apt have multiple iPads, tablets, TVs, wireless electronic timers, or a wireless thermostat? Then you should consider the TP-Link AD7200 router! This device provides a strong signal in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies plus it has the 60GHz band. My family has been extremely satisfied since I upgraded our router about two weeks ago.

I started my search for a router about three months ago when my wife asked how we could operate a driveway entry gate to our home. After doing some research I found we could do some of the following:
    - trench a set of telephone wires back to our house (which connects to the home phone)
    - install a unit that connects with a cellular connection (pay a month cellular fee)
    - install a wireless unit such as the RING doorbell (connects to cell phone w/ video anywhere in the world)
The third option looked best for me as digging a line back to the house to use a landline phone to open a gate sounded outdated. Using a cellular GSM 2G or 3G connection would require a monthly fee…usually around $15. That’s $180 a year just to open a driveway gate, which doesn’t sound appealing at all. I am still working out the final plans on the third choice with our contractor, but in the meantime on with the review.
So, I wanted to boost the wi-fi signal to the front edge of my driveway. My previous router (TP-Link Wireless Gigabit Archer C8 AC1750 Router) had been working fine for the past few years, but the signal wasn’t strong enough to reach out front. I decided to search on Amazon for the latest routers and decided to go with TP-Link again. I have used other brands such as: Netgear, ASUS, and Linksys, and had pretty good success over the years, but since TP-Link had never given me a dropped signal or any other router issues, I went with this company again.
The AD7200 router was ordered via Amazon Prime and was delivered promptly (as expected). The packaging was easy to open and everything was laid out…router, manual, and power adapter. I connected the router to my cable modem and with some additional easy-to-follow-instructions I was up and running. Incidentally, I prepared the family that as I was switching out routers and the internet would be down for approximately one hour…of course, my two children looked puzzled! What were they to do for an hour?!?!? No YouTube, no Netflix, no Amazon video!!! I assured them everything would be fine and the world would still exist and to do things I used to do in the non-electronic age…plays with toy cars, play on the swings, or read a book! Fortunately for our family, we limit their electronic time anyway…it was pretty amusing to me at that moment!
Now as for the AD7200 router…I am not an I.T. guy and my background is not in computer science, so I would like to share my observations from a non-scientific perspective. Upon plugging in the router, I connected one LAN port straight to my PC. That connection in itself (loading web pages) was faster with this router than my previous router. Is it due to the faster processor? I believe so but not sure. In terms of the wireless connections, I found coverage and speeds were excellent…a boost over the previous router. Things to consider:
    - When using the TP-Link web-interfaced menu, you can select with frequencies you want turned on/off. For example, I don’t have any AD 60GHz equipment for now, so that freq was turned off. I am using 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so those were left on.

    - I made sure I selected DIFFERENT passwords for the 2.4GHz & 5GHz frequencies. I had previously encountered a problem with my Rachio Smart Sprinkler 2nd Generation and getting it to connect to my router. The problem, which was later discovered, was that the unit was trying to jump frequencies to select the best signal…even though it operates only on 2.4GHz. They recommended selecting different passwords for each band. So, for example, if you are using a WPA2 configuration you could use 0123456789 as the password for the 2.4GHz band and 0123456788 as the password for the 5GHz band. The only thing I changed was the last two digits for each. This was only to illustrate making two different passwords as I don’t recommend you secure your router this way. Now, in making those changes and setting up all the devices in my house, I have noticed when multiple devices are being used, nothing is lagging…music is streaming, videos are playing, and the kids have no issues with their games.

    - One change I made with the kids iPads, I selected the 5GHz band first and then the 2.4GHz second. Since the children are in the house with their iPads, the less commonly used frequency and now strong signal is a better choice for them. Other observations include: My wireless Venstar thermostat displayed a stronger wireless signal, there was an increase in signal strength (vs the previous router) in the far corners of our home (approx 2500 sqft), and the main reason for upgrading….a very strong signal to the front driveway!

I am positive the upgraded technology is behind the great connections and seamless upgrade process. TP-Link did a great job in making it easy for me to switch out routers and with the upgrade taking LESS than one hour, the kids were happy! A few more things to add…the router is big…not huge but big and odd but it can be wall mounted as another option. I opted for taking a corner on my home desk. TP-Link also toned down the blue lights that a lot of companies like to use. Instead of making your room a bright blue at night, their router has tiny blue dots that produce a soft glow…much better! The last point is the power adapter. The AD7200 uses the least amount of energy out of their current router line-up. I was surprised that a router can consume 30w and up….constantly! I picture a 40 watt light bulb being left on at home while I’m not there. Take a look at the power adapters on some of your items (cable modem, router, switch, DVR) and see how much electricity they consume.
Also, some people claim routers or cable modems may be the result of a signal drop from their ISP. Always consider the age of your cable being ran into the house/apt. A co-worker described to me a frequent, dropping internet connection. He requested a cable company employee come out for service. An employee came out and blamed his router. After the worker left, the same problem returned…he called the company again and another technician came out. The second tech traced the problem back to the cable at the pole running into his house. After replacing the line with fresh wire, he no longer had issues…something to think about!
    I highly recommend this router!

    - No noticeable heat…my previous router didn’t have this issue as well
    - Soft blue lights up front, not blinding bright

    Con:
    - Expensive since it incorporates the AD 60GHz band, which I don’t use…for now

I have 3 of these AD7200 units and they are REALLY buggy with frequent crashes. Hooking up my 8TB external HDD instantly crashes them. Putting them under ANY load at all, like 60Mb sustained with multiple connections (not torrents mind you, like Steam downloading while Win Updates are downloading) will crash it after a few minutes requiring a power cycle.

Recently I had one arbitrarily lock up and upon rebooting was simply bricked. Tried all the normal stuff, 30-30-30 resets and the like and nothing. It will not even begin to boot. So I start down the road of getting an RMA to return it. After calling and being on hold forever, get disconnected. Call back, busy. Call back, on hold again. Finally get to tech support who sends an email form for me to fill out. Fill it out and send it back expecting to get an RMA number. Instead get ANOTHER email back asking for another filled in form. Do that and 3 days later still no RMA number. Meanwhile NO ROUTER! Email them again asking where my RMA number is and no response.

With Netgear or any other company, I have never had trouble getting an RMA number. Now long are consumers supposed to wait especially when Internet for many people is pretty important? This is unacceptable. In addition to the unit being a serious POS, their service is even worse.

Stick with Netgear or some other brand. I ended up giving up and just getting an R8500, the latest Made in Viet version and it has been rock solid, including its 2.4GHz channels which were supposedly a problem. Signal strength is better, never crashes, never drops connections, doesn't lock up when you hang a USB HDD off it...aka it works like it is supposed to. And if it ever doesn't, I know Netgear will not give me the run around.

    Never again TP-Link!

UPDATE: Several more days, more follow up emails STILL NO RMA number. Meanwhile the remaining 2 TP-Link AD7200 crash frequently and require power cycling. These are the buggiest routers I have ever used.

UPDATE JULY 2017 - The AD7200 at my office still crashes at least weekly, losing WAN connectivity requiring a power cycle. My other line I am running a Netgear R8500 as a replacement and that thing is bulletproof...NEVER AGAIN TP-LINK!

UPDATE OCT 2017 - My Netgear R8500 still rock solid while my TP-Link AD7200s still crash once every 4 or 5 days requiring me to physically unplug the power and plug it back in.

    AVOID TP-LINK AT ALL COSTS!

We had a problem with roger routers having to be reset over and over. This router solved all that we never have to reset it. All our cameras and devices work and don't need to be reset. Videos don't freeze anymore. The best move we made to fix our internet speeds was buying this router. worth every penny

Giving the product the benefit of the doubt as it was DOA out of the box |-( Really bummed me out. My main critique is that it was shopped in the retail box with out an exterior box with padding that I suspect may have led it to be DOA.Looks like the crown on the Night King from Game of Thrones, unfortunately was as dead as that guy....
