I bought this to replace my old(Faulty) D-link travel router and I was surprised how this little router outperformed the D-Link straight out of the box.
For the price it is an excellent value for money.
Top reviews from other countries
I see a lot of Pros and Cons are already listed in other reviews, so I will keep that part for the end of my review and write the stuff that I think it is more relevant
Things you need to know about the router:
1. It reboots when you connect it to it's charger via the Micro-USB port and reboots when you disconnect charging as well.
What this implies is that you should be prepared for temporary connection loss when you keep it for charge or remove it.
2. It provides good range upto 10 feet and then it's range drops exponentially thereafter.
This implies that it will provide coverage in all corners of a 350 sq ft room if placed in the center. Good enough for most rooms (Hotels/Bedrooms)
Keeping the router at a higher height will provide a marginally better coverage. Walls will reduce it's effective range further; so if you are sitting in a different room than that in which the router is placed, you will get reduced throughput (slower speed) while browsing.
3. It's battery life for 3G/4G connections is about 3-3.5 hours. If you are using it as a WISP client or an Access Point (AP) the battery lasts between 4-4.5 hours
4. The modem can also be configured as Repeater/Client/Bridge in the AP mode.
You can refer to the manual in the accompanying CD on how to do that
5. The back cover is a bit flimsy. If you keep on removing the cover often, chances are it might break.
The reason why you might to open the back cover is when you need to check your Serial number or the initial Wi-Fi password after resetting it. I would suggest you take a photo of the back of the router after removing the back cover and refer to the photo when you need it.
6. If you want to increase the range of this device, you can buy a WiFi Range extender.
One suggestion is that since this device can support a maximum speed of 150 mbps, buy a range extender that supports the same speed. Buying a higher speed range extender won't be of help and will cost you more.
Pros:
All that is listed on the TP-Link Website and on Amazon.com
Points that can be improved upon:
1. Back cover build could have been better
2. Having two LAN ports instead of 1.
3. Higher battery capacity
P.S. For those who haven't been able to configure their ZTE AC2791 on this Router, please refer to my video on Youtube on "How to set-up MR3040 with ZTE AC2791"
Cheers!
I tried WISP mode and it worked ok with a laptop but intermittently with a Nexus tablet. I couldn't get repeater mode to work at all. There are some minor issues with charging the battery; I tried a different mains charger with the same spec as the supplied charger and the battery didn't seem to be able to reach full charge; the so-called 'orange' charging led is a sort of mucky green; it would be nice to have a battery state indicator in the bios. Otherwise a satisfactory buy.
Regarding the product, it is a really good product. I bought it because I had an old TATA Docomo 3G E-stick without Wi-Fi hardware built in. Plugges it in, worked like a charm. Will list out the points :
Pros :
1. Easy initial one time setup. Very quick. And after that, you just have to turn the device on and you are good to go.
2. Anytime you plug in a new 3G dongle, just have to set it up once.
2. Compatible with a lot of 3G dongles.
3. Also has an ethernet port. So people having old ADSL modem+router, this is helpful for you too.
4. Elegant look. Light weight.
5. Almost all the configuration features of a good router device (like Belkin etc.) are available on the setup page. You have MAC address filtering also.
Cons :
1. The range of Wi-Fi is decent. If you try to connect from a phone or laptop, you will be able to go up to 10-12 meters since the receptors are strong. But I have a desktop in which I have plugged in a USB Wi-Fi adapter. I have to keep this device just next to it so that it gets full strength. after 2-3 meters, the strength drops significantly and after 5 meters, it doesn't detect the Wi-Fi connection at all. Don't expect a full house range. but yes, it is portable. so that helps.
2. Uses non-standard battery. i am not sure how long will the TP-Link battery last and how do I get a new one. But not worried about it right now.
The unit is working fine now, the battery back up is amazing, build quality is good. Except for the firmware update, this unit is a simple plug and play with little programming using the IE to set up the user name, password and pick up the line to dial for the dongle connected. Simple product to create a wi fi zone during travel. Save a lot on hotel internet connections..
The device is working well with my Reliance 3 ZTE-2739 USB dongle. Configuration was easy once the device firmware was upgraded.
Pros:
*Premium looks and easy to carry in pocket
*Easy to configure
*Uninterrupted connection
*Can be used as a power bank also
*No need to carry separate charger to charge the device while travelling. It works with any of your smartphone micro USB charger.
Cons:
*Battery life maximum 3-4hours only
*Range not that good beyond 1-2 walls
*Back cover is quite flimsy
NB: Update your device firmware before configuring, from TP-link official website, here: [...]
My internet is not getting disconnected while plugging in or removing the charger; as commented by some others here.
Overall I'm satisfied with the device. Friends, if you are planning to buy a portable WiFi router for your 3G-4G USB device, Go for it!
