Support QoS for Multiple-media Optimization

Image With Quality of Service (QoS), you can determine how much bandwidth is allocated to each application. This can guarantee that each application will have some bandwidth, meaning that no single application can take down an entire Internet connection. All you have to do is choose which type of traffic you use – Internet surfing, online gaming, video streaming etc. - and the QoS will guarantee clear, instant reproduction of that application even when with other applications are running on the network at the same time.

This item is as described. In reading some of the other reviews, I believe the confusion is in the initial paring of the units. All I did was plug them into two different outlets in the same room (clearly they were on the same circuit) and paired them, I did not even bother to plug in any Ethernet cables. I then moved one unit near my router and the other unit to a distant bedroom, hooked up the Ethernet cables and everything worked as described. I did not use the software resource disk that came with them.

I am getting much faster speeds in the bedroom than I was with Wireless N. I changed the cables to Cat 5e and both units are humming along with green lights. I would highly recommend these to anyone with wireless issues.

Also, although they are bigger than your typical power wart, they are designed so that if you plug them into the bottom outlet of the receptacle, they do not interfere at all with top outlet, leaving it free for a power strip or UPS. This was one of the unknown concerns I had prior to purchase.

For clarification the model I am reviewing is the TL-PA511 KIT.

I decided to try this powerline kit after running into some issues using a wireless 2.4 Ghz 802.11n bridge. The wireless bridge is made up of 2 Netgear WNRL3500 routers, one running standard Netgear firmware, the other running Tomato 1.28. For the most part the wireless bridge worked ok. I was able to get around 70 Mb throughput from one device wired straight into one router to another device wired straight into the other router. But there were odd pauses and hiccups, especially while gaming online. After running a ping directly from one router to the other I found that latency was all over the place. For example:

Target Name: N/A
IP: 192.168.128.1
Date/Time: 9/17/2013 7:37:30 PM to 9/18/2013 7:57:42 PM

Hop Sent Err PL% Min Max Avg Host Name / [IP]
1 86400 44 0.1 0 2204 12 [192.168.128.1]

This is the result of a PingPlotter run lasting 24 hours. This was run from one computer on one side of the bridge pinging the router at the other side of the bridge. This DID NOT go out to the internet. Even with that I got a maximum ping time of 2204. That's an over 2 second delay getting from one router to another. Worse yet was the packet loss. Add that to the normal delays and packet loss once you route out to the internet and you have a recipe for issues for any latency sensitive application (VoIP, gaming, video conference etc...)

Here are the results of another PingPlotter 24 hour run, this time over a TP-LINK TL-PA511 Kit:

Target Name: N/A
IP: 192.168.128.1
Date/Time: 9/16/2013 7:03:36 PM to 9/17/2013 7:23:51 PM

Hop Sent Err PL% Min Max Avg Host Name / [IP]
1 86400 0 0.0 1 242 2 [192.168.128.1]

The results are almost an order of magnitude better.

The 2 units connect with no problem and the speed is much better than wireless in my house. The problem is "The Power Saver Mode" that you can not deal with. Once your computer goes into Standby (Sleep) mode or even Shutdown then the PA511 goes into it's own Power Saver mode as well. Now when you turn the computer back ON or waking up from Sleep the PA511 DOES NOT wake up.
The only way to get around it is to unplug the unit and plug it back in. Tech Support has a Beta Firmware that you can install (Windows Only) and allows you to turn this mode off.... I would say for now stay away from this till they fix the issue...

I have one adapter plugged into my living room outlet behind my entertainment area and the other is in a separate building out in my backyard, the 'Shack', as it is known. This is easily a wire path of 250 feet or more. Guess what??? Plug and play! It works! Nothing to set up, just plug them in and in seconds it works!

I am not getting the best throughput it is capable of, but that is because of the distance I am using these to cover. I still get transmission rates that easily best my 10mbps internet speed and that is all I really wanted, to be able to have internet out in the Shack.

I love this product and would highly recommend it. This was so much easier than trying to make some sort of repeater run for my home's wifi. That just wasn't working.

I have an Almond router (configured as an access point) connected to the TP-LINK adapter out in the shack so I have all my wireless connections to it then going through this wonderful adapter which eventually finds it way over rg6 cable (using DECA) to my router and DSL modem. Brilliant product!

I did have amazon replace the first TP-Link adapter set because one of the adapters had a soft hum when plugged in. It was not noticeable if there was any noise in the room from anything else, but at night, it was definitely noticeable in my living room which was silent before adding the adapter. It was super annoying to me, but with the replacement adapter set I just got in neither adapter hums. I'm happy!

Thanks for a great product that works as advertised (even at extremes!).
