I searched high and low for a router without wireless capabilities that was affordable. All the models I found were expensive enterprise units with more ports than I could ever hope to need. Then I came across this product, and my problems were solved.

After years of running Wi-Fi routers in our home, I finally came to realize that Wi-Fi routers do a whole lot of things, but they do none of them very well. Even the most expensive high-end Wi-Fi routers are just a compromise in functionality and performance. So instead, our home office network now uses dedicated Wi-Fi access points hooked up to a dedicated switch which accesses the internet through this dedicated wired router. Each of these components does its job much better than the all-in-one Wi-Fi routers we used to waste our money on: our network is faster, our Wi-Fi range is much wider, and the cost was only marginally higher than the top-of-the-line Netgear consumer-grade Wi-Fi router we bought before.

The TP Llink router does everything we need it to, never gets warm, and is more than fast enough. I was initially skeptical of the 100base-t Ethernet ports, but then I realized that the only traffic going through those ports was going to be internet traffic, and unless your internet connection is far greater than 100mbps, this router won't ever be a bottleneck. Even the Comcast 105mbps package doesn't really ever reach 105mbps... although their new 305mbps internet option would outclass this router.

This router has all the features you'd expect from an enterprise class wired router, including bandwidth limiting for ranges of IPs, a firewall, a DDNS client, and much more. And at this price, it's an absolute bargain.

Don't let the name fool you, there's nothing toilet-papery about this router. It's been an absolute joy to have in our office these last few months.

We bought this router to replace a D-Link EBR-2310 that turned out to be the source of most of our connection problems.

I was half expecting to configure the TP-Link TL-R860, but none was required. I just connected it as instructed, and it "just worked". The router appears to be doing a very reliable job in handling traffic. In the event configuration is necessary however, the interface appears very user friendly and powerful.

Our broadband modem is a Motorola Surfboard Extreme. On part of the network we use a Mega plug AV powerline ethernet adapter, and haven't noticed any compatibility problems with that. In addition, we have a very old Netgear hub connected to that, which the PS3 and other devices are connected to. We have several different computers on our network. Some run XP, others run Windows 7, and Vista. We haven't noticed any sharing problems.

We get a ping of around 35-40ms with a speed of 35-40 Mbps download, and 5 Mbps upload, using Cox.

Cons: For a wired router, none that I can observe or think of.

I'm glad I took a chance in getting this router. even though there weren't many reviews. The fact that it has 8 LAN ports, is an awesome bonus.

The price on this is incredible considering the features it has. It is so cheap that I was agreeably surprised to find an Ethernet cable in the box. It also set up painlessly. Another great thing about it is that it is specified to draw only 2 watts, which is ecologically sound.
But I chose to return it because it seemed to cut my Internet throughput in half. Connected directly to the cable modem, Speedtest.net reports 20 mbps. Connected through this router, it reports less than 10 mbps. This is consistent across multiple interleaved tests.

Update Feb 2013:
I went with another TP-Link Router, the TP-link TL-R470T+ Internal Universal Power Supply Load Balance Broadband Router, which I have now had for 6 weeks, and which I am very happy with.

Setup for mixed OS home network quickly using manual browser "quick setup" option. No issues with setup, worked well right from boot up. Then began turning on security features. The fast WAN port 10/100 is an upgrade for us as well as the 8 LAN ports. Streaming media works well with it. Liked all the security options and parental control options, including the selecting the "use these DNS servers" suggest OpenDNS or similar for parental controls in a layered defense in keeping out bad internet stuff.

Have to return due to the fact the advertised "Smart QoS" features do not work properly on my network.

I have a 40Mbps down/5Mbps up connection, and devoted 200Kbps to a telephone/Voip adapter.

With this setting turned on, my speed drops by 12Mbps, and my upload speed by over 3Mbps, even when the Voip adapter is idle. Turning the feature off quickly gives me my bandwidth back.

To me, that is "not working properly". I shouldn't have to sacrifice several Mbps of bandwidth so I can devote 0.20Mbps to a single device. I am returning this device and looking for a wired router with QoS features that actually work.

After having 3 separate Linksys BEFSR81 routers fail to install properly due to firmware defects, I got this TP model. It looks nice (I like boxy not amorphous) but it failed to install properly also (but due to improper setup on my part.) After calling the Free Tech Support, I got someone with with heavy Asian accent somewhat difficult to understand, that very gracefully tried to help but failed. I then found some Googled info about installing ADSL routers and reading between the lines realized the missing instruction needed about DHCP release on Modem but then NOT renewing until after recabling to the Router. Thereupon the TP Router installed properly and all has been well for months. The TP Browser Interface Screens were similar to but clearer and a few more options than the Linksys.
