3 Months, now Useless
Had it since May 9th, now all interfaces stay green but they don't work. Reset it, powered off and on, lit some candles, the works. It stopped working. I'm calling tech support and see what they can do but at the moment this thing is useless. I'll change the rating as my experience changes.

The price and capability of this router are very good. The stock firmware comes with many features, if wanted, it's easy to flash DD-WRT or OpenWrt. The device is low power, supports IP 6 with vanilla firmware, firmware is updated regularly at the TP-Link site (updates from TP-Link will likely stop once this device is no longer marketed).

The router is fast, works with uPnP, and seems to handle our active home very well.

TP-Link seems to have replaced Linksys as a low cost, somewhat advanced home router.

Aside from decent capability, and compatibility with other router firmwares, this is a silent router (no fan), comes with 2 decent antennas, 2 USB (USB 2, not 3) connections, 8 MB of firmware, 128 MB of RAM. Internally the WDR3600 and WDR4300 are nearly identical with an exception for wireless support (they use different wireless chips). The WDR3600 has 2 antennas, the WDR4300 has 3. In terms of how that affects wireless performance, using the 2.4 Ghz band (the most common, and legacy set of frequencies) both the WDR3600 and WDR4300 have the same maximum throughput of 300Mbs.In the 5Ghz band (for newer "dual band" devices), the WDR3600 is still a max 300 Mbs device, while the WDR4300 becomes a 450Mbs device. If you use 5Ghz and need better throughput the WDR4300 may be the better choices.

The only cons are size (it's flat enough, but is wider and deeper than similar routers, still not huge, but slightly larger than most), also it's rather well lit. If you like blue LED's flashing regularly on the front of your router, this will be a favorite. There seems to be no control over light intensity, and they are a bit bright.

Note of interest, the WDR3600 does not automatically engage wireless security. The WDR4300 seems to automatically enable wireless security. There are some features enabled in the WDR4300 firmware which are absent in the WDR3600 firmware, but they don't seem significant. The WDR4300 has USB webcam support, the WDR3600 does not.

he TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Wireless N600 Dual Band Router is a solid budget dual band router. It's identical to the WDR4300 except for having two antennas instead of three, and topping out at 300Mbps on the 5Ghz band instead of 450Mbps. The WDR3600 is full featured with both dual band wireless b/g/n support and has good range in the 2.4Ghz band. Range in the 5Ghz band is adequate but generally inferior to more advanced routers with beam forming schemes and other 5Ghz signal enhancing technology. It has guest networks in both bands, IPv6 support for most ISPs (more about that later), is highly configurable, and has gigabit LAN ports, a built in media server and two USB 2.0 ports.

The only complaint I have had is that the TP-LINK engineers cannot seem to get traction working with Comcast/XFINITY IPv6 in the USA. TP-LINK routers like the WDR3600 have suffered chronic problems coping with Comcast's IPv6 implementation. For the longest time TP-LINK routers just could not seem to acquire or keep a Comcast IPv6 gateway. It seems to be a unique situation with Comcast's technical deployment. Although TP-LINK has issued several router firmware updates which have tried to address the Comcast IPv6 issue, sort of, the fixes have been neither stable or lasting, so far, as of October 2015. Recent updates "fixed it". But the routers seem to still drop IPv6 gateway and delegation after a few days and not automatically reacquire it. Linksys and D-LINK, for whatever reason, seem to get it, whatever "it" is, about how Comcast is using IPv6. No Comcast problems with Linksys or D-LINK. So, all my otherwise positive comments about the TP-LINK WDR3600 should be balanced against this single issue for Comcast customers.

In fairness to the TP-LINK engineering department these kinds of problems more often than not result from the engineering staffs for router companies being located in China, not in the US or Europe. So they are therefore unable to directly connect their equipment to US cable modem and other ISPs for testing or compatibility trouble shooting. They are designing to standards but testing in a theoretical rather than real world environment. Therefore there can be a long lag time between when users start complaining of problems and the staffs in China can figure out what is going on in the US. But the problems do seem to get solved eventually. Nevertheless, Comcast IPv6 seems to baffle the TP-LINK firmware team to date.

From a price/performance, interface and styling standpoint the TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Wireless N600 Dual Band Router is a good choice and value for connection to ISPs other than Comcast and, if TP-LINK can ever figure out the Comcast IPv6 puzzle, for Comcast as well. The difficulty in reviewing a wireless router is that there are so any variables in each person's use environment -- size of house or apartment, what the walls between rooms are made out of, how far away the router is from the device being used, how many other wireless routers are nearby competing for the same channel and bandwidth, etc. One person may buy a router and say "Best router ever! I love it!" and another may buy the same router and say "It sucks! Piece of junk!". There's no free lunch when it comes to high end router performance. But there are good budget choices and the WDR3600 is a good value in its price range.

Replaced my older Linksys with DD-WRT firmware that was dying a slow hardware malfunctioning death. For half of the price of the mainstream name brand products, this thing kicks some serious bum. It took a little bit of a learning curve to figure out the not so intuitive interface, but all in all the stoick firmware is full of some really decent features. The lights on front are a bit much too, but I don't care much about those. The device functioned very well right out of the box after setup. My cable internet speeds leveled out at max and barely wavered on all of my tests. I also got this device for the USBs...there are two of them. The one thing that I found VERY NICE about the media sharing capabilities is that it does have the ability to network share an external hardrive with more than one partition...which some older/other routers have issues with. In fact I think it can properly NAS an HDD with up to 7 if my memory serves correctly.

Either way, I've been using this router for a few weeks now and have seen no issues. Aside from that, I'll update my review if anything happens in the long run.

**UPDATE - after a few months of use a new firmware was released which fixed a few issues I was starting to see. The only remaining issue that I've noticed is when both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are enabled the router has a difficult time booting and/or functioning at times. It may take a few reboots to get the wireless to come up with both enabled and I'm not certain why. Also, even though the router allows you to name both bands the same for wireless, name them differently, otherwise you will have issues with the wireless functionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Value and Feature Set
Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2014
We recently upgraded to a 120MBits/sec internet package so the home network required upgrading to gigabit speed to match. Our network requires both wired and wireless capability so I had to confirm that the 4 LAN ports are all gigabit, this one is. It couldn't be easier to install. Just access the internal URL and follow the easy step by step guide. I used the same encryption key, encryption protocol and subnet IPs as the old router so I was pleasantly surprised that the new router scanned for devices on the network and automatically connected them ! Guest internet is a nice bonus as is the concurrent 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz connectivity. I use 2.4 for guest and 5 for the home network, 802.11n only for 5Ghz for greatest security.

Built-in print server (connect the printer directly to the routers USB port) requires installation of a small app on every computer connected to the router but it works well once up and running. There is a 2nd USB port that can be used for a network hard drive.

If ease of installation and features at a great price are what you're looking for, you can't go wrong with the WDR3600.

3.0 out of 5 stars The physical hookup was easy but then the problem started
Reviewed in Canada on October 16, 2014
This arrived in a rather large box and I was surprised to find that the only thing inside was this router.
I read the directions and started to hook it up at 3:00 PM. The physical hookup was easy but then the problem started. I could not get it to work properly even when hooked directly by ethernet cable.
I then called the Support number and was greeted by a pleasant lady who spoke Chinese much better than she spoke English. Both frustrated by a language barrier, she emailed me the link to an updated firmware. The one supplied with the router was out of date. When I finally got to download the firmware upgrade I installed it on the router. Then, and only then, was I able to get the router working. It was now 10:30 PM. A total of 7 1/2 hours before I got it working!
Since the installation the router has been working well. As well as the Cisco router it replaced. For the price, and without the installation problems, it isn't a bad router.
