Product Description
Product Description
Wireless N PCI Adapter TL-WN851ND allows you to connect a desktop computer to a wireless network and access high-speed Internet connection. Comply with IEEE 802.11n, they provide wireless speed up to 300Mbps, which is beneficial for the online gaming or even HD video streaming. Wireless N - Speed & Range. MIMO (multiple input, multiple output antennas) technology, it shows more excellent abilities of mitigating data loss over long distances and through obstacles in a small office or a large apartment, even in a steel-and-concrete building. Above all, you could easily pick up the wireless network during long-distance connection where legacy 11g products may not! CCA Technology - Stable Wireless Signals. Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) automatically avoids channel conflicts using its clear channel selection feature and fully realizes the advantages of channel binding, greatly enhanced the wireless performance. WPA/WPA2 Encryptions - Advanced Security. As for the security of WI-FI connection, WEP encryption has been no longer the strongest and safest guards for outside intrusions. TL-WN851ND provides WPA/WPA2 encryptions that are created by the WI-FI Alliance industry group, promoting interpretabilities and security for WLAN, which could effectively and efficiently protect the wireless network. Quick Security Setup. Compatible with WI-FI Protected Setup (WPS), TL-WN851ND features Quick Security Setup (QSS) function, which is ideal for creating a WPA encrypted connection to prevent outside intrusion, and meanwhile maximize the management resources. Not only is this faster than normal security setups but more convenient in that you don't need to remember a password! Bundled CD for Easy Operation. TL-WN851ND comes with a CD with utility that helps you complete the software installation and wireless network settings, including security configurations and wireless connection, which is convenient for users, even for novice users. Frequency Range: 2.400-2.4835GHz; Interface Available: 32-bit PCI; System Requirement: Windows 7(32/64bits) Windows Vista(32/64bits) , Windows XP(32/64bits) Windows 2000; Wireless Standards: IEEE 802.11n IEEE 802.11g IEEE 802.11b

I have not had any freeze ups and have been streaming video with no problems. I paired this up with a TP-LINK TL-ANT2408C 2.4GHz 8dBi Indoor Desktop Omni-directional Antenna and am getting 5 bar signal strength at ~40' from my router.
Mine came with a low profile bracket.
Microsoft says this wireless adapter is compatible with Windows 8, but NOT with Windows 8.1.

I purchased this adapter because my MB only has a PCI slot. I found Windows 8 and 8.1 drivers and thought they would work with this adapter. They do not. www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=33&system=7
TP-Link has posted on numerous sites that this adapter will not work with Windows 8 and 8.1 and in their product description nowhere does it say it supports Win 8 or 8.1, so don’t blame them. They have stated that Windows 8 and 8.1 will install a Windows 8/8.1 Microsoft Qualcomm Atheros driver and it’s hit or miss if it works. The driver works for me but I have read that others are still getting freeze-ups with the Microsoft driver.
There is another method that others have posted that they have had success with in Windows 8 and 8.1, running the TP-Link drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode. I have tested this and it works.
1. Download the latest drivers from here: www.tp-link.us/download/TL-WN851ND.html#Driver unzip them, and copy the folder to a flash drive or to your hard drive if accessible.
2. Scroll to the top left of your screen and open the side charm bar, or press Windows key +C
3. Click on Search and type in Troubleshooting, click on Troubleshooting
4. In Programs click on Run Programs made for previous versions of Windows
5. Click on Next and select Not Listed
6. Select Browse and go to the location you downloaded the driver to. Click on the folder and select the Setup.exe file
7. Click Next and select Troubleshoot Program
8. Select Windows 7.
9. Click on Test the Program. Install the TP-Link drivers. If you previously installed the TP-Link drivers and software it will ask you to Repair or Uninstall. Select Uninstall. And then Install. When it gets to the Setup window chose Install Drivers Only.
10. When done click next and click on Yes, save these settings for this program and click on Finish.
11. Open Control Panel, Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right click on TP-Link 300 Mps Wireless N adapter and click on Properties, click on Driver. It should say TP-Link, 10/23/2010, 8.00.376, Microsoft Wireless Hardware Compatibility Publisher. If it is still running the Microsoft Qualcomm Atheros driver you will have to manually uninstall it and repeat the procedure.
Usually any hardware that's compatible with Windows 7 is compatible with Windows 8. TP-Link and Qualcomm need to get off their collective butts and come up with stable Windows 8/8.1 drivers. But this is a 5 year old PCI wifi adapter so I doubt that will happen.
10/27/17 Addendum: I found a wireless antenna in my parts closet. Wish I could tell you the brand but it is not marked. It's about 6 inches tall, pyramidal in shape, with two 3-foot leads coming from it, terminating in connectors that screwed into the PCI card. I placed it on my window sill above the PC. Wham, my download speed jumped to 70 Mbps from my router across the house. (Asus AC1900 RT-AC68P). So this little PCI card will deliver strong signals with an antenna upgrade.
I was not in the least bit disappointed. The installation was a breeze (which actually went even better than installation for the first card I mentioned above) for the card itself and for the driver software both. The connection to my local home network was easy, and transfer speeds were excellent. In fact on the 2.4 GHz band, this card is just as fast as the later model I mentioned above. (But there is no 5 GHz band for this card.) Then I waited a week for the card to drop the network connection. I am happy to say that it has not happened yet.
One final bit you may or may not care about. This card also works with Linux (Fedora) just fine with no heroic effort to make it work. (The computer is a dual boot machine.)
I will revisit this review in a year if the card fails or develops problems before than, but at the moment I recommend it very highly. If you have an older computer with no PCIe slot on the motherboard, I don't believe you can do better this one.
