So being a low-cost device and with the purpose of conducting a performance test, I decided to change the stock firmware with DDWRT firmware and that was an excellent decision, the device provides a super stable signal, wireless speed of 65Mbps at mixed mode BGN, it could reach the 150Mbps at N mode but I have to bear with my old wifi devices, good power (the router wr740n comes with a 5dBi antenna), the wan port (blue) is now an additional switch port, I bought it a month ago and I have not had to reboot it.
Summarizing, this router, as second AP, is just what I needed plus all the improvements and tweaks the DDWRT firmware provides, it was an Excelent purchase.
3:16pm open box
3:16pm plug in power
3:16pm pull off annoying "Please Run the CD First" sticker that is blocking the ethernet ports
3:16pm plug in ethernet cable to computer
3:16pm watch as my home page comes up on my computer
Yes, that's right: less than one minute to internet connection. So, to resume:
3:17pm type 18.104.22.168 and guess"admin" as my sign on and "admin" as my password. Correct.
3:17pm name router for broadcast
3:18pm Yes, a minute has gone by!
3:18pm click WEP preference and type in password
3:18pm reboot router (mandatory)
3:19pm OMG another minute!
3:19pm move to other computer, look for wireless network, find network as named, type password, log on successfully
I am done. Three minutes. Let me repeat: three minutes.
We'll see about the longterm performance, but you simply cannot ask for better set up than that. No more dinking around with faulty routers ever. Just buy a new TP-Link. My new motto. Well, okay, that's highly un-green and I will attempt fixes, but gosh, that was easy.
Edit: Three months later. No problems. I notice a bunch of recent bad reviews (October-December 2012). Maybe a bad lot from the factory? My unit from early September is still performing flawlessly.

It was fairly easy to set up and so far it works. The only complaint I have is that the website provided for cable isp installation doesn't work. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Coco
