I've been using Apple Time Capsules for a decade. They were still working okay, but I was using a TP-Link power line to run ethernet to a TV. This worked, but not reliably. Lots of resets.
Looking at the options, one possibility seemed to be to shift to wifi. Another seemed to be to use a mesh like this, put one unit at the TV and use an ethernet cable. So I got these to try: Deco P7 with mesh wifi and AV600 power line. The package has three identical units. The first one you connect to the "modem" or ethernet becomes the master. No hardware specific master and slave units.
It was a 30 minute installation. Set up a new network. One unit backhauled on ethernet. The other unit (by the problem TV) backhauled on powerlilne and mesh wifi. I didn't have to choose anything to optimize the route methods. I have max bars wifi over my whole house (2 floors, 3,000 SF). The only odd part to me is using an iPhone app to do the setup. But okay.
I haven't had a single hiccup since the setup. Everything worked fine, and all my hard to resolve network problems have gone away. I did call tech support (not for the Deco, but for the Powerline units). The Deco setup conflicts with the other TP-Link power line units and I had to do hard resets for them to get them up and running again. The support team was easy to work with, and stayed on the line with me for 30 min of troubleshooting.
The iPhone app provides a lot of info on the status of network devices. It's easy to navigate and understand. You can't set up static IPs (bad), but you can "reserve" up to 24 numbers (good), but not 25+ (bad). There's some basic QoS, based on usage type.
Only downside I've seen so far is the limited control and visibility. The iPhone app is the only way (supposedly) to manage these, and it doesn't have all the functions you might expect to see in a a router and wifi. TPLink has opted for "easy" over comprehensive.
All in all, if you need an upgrade for your wifi, you want great performance, you want simple setup and simple maintenance, you can't go wrong with these. The devices look good, are small, provide great performance and are relatively inexpensive.
If only the rest of my gear worked this well!
I’m using the Deco system in Access Point mode just to provide wired and Wifi access throughout the house since the ISP mandates their cable modem gateway, and I didn’t want to have another router behind that. Installation of the system was pretty simple — I watched a TP-Link video before receiving the system and had already created an account for the Deco app. Because I am using the system in Access Point mode I can’t comment on its abilities as a router.
The throughput in the problematic room (and elsewhere) has been fantastic, both on the two Ethernet ports and Wifi. I was previously measuring ~5Mbps down, ~2Mbps up, and now get ~68Mbps down, ~7Mbps up, which is the same as I get using a wired connection on the ISP’s gateway. That’s faster than the old AV600 system even before it suddenly slowed down. A three Deco system has more than replaced four older Powerline-based Wifi access points.
There are a few downsides, however. I had to power-cycle every Deco once within the first 24 hours of installing the system to get the network working again. The Decos were still providing Wifi, but could not communicate with the Internet. That’s when I found out that the iPhone app lacked an option to reboot the Decos, something that TP-Link’s other Powerline networking products can do.
Updating the firmware on the Decos was (I think) supposed to update all at the same time to the new version, since the app warned that they would all restart. However, I got three separate firmware update notifications, so each was updated separately and required separate reboots.
Another annoyance is the lack of control over the Wifi radios. The Decos are using channels 7 + 11 on the 2.4GHz band, which is great for theoretical throughput but a bad choice in practice due to interference from nearby overlapping networks. I wish I could limit the 2.4GHz network to 20MHz channel widths and set the channel manually.
Update December 6, 2019:
The Deco network has now been installed for just under two months, and aside from the hiccup right after installation which required power-cycling, it has been absolutely solid. Everyone and everything has Wifi, online gaming is smooth, and the problems with two printers in the home that would periodically drop off the network and required them to be power-cycled to reappear using the previous networking hardware is gone, too. Another smart TV has been added to the network in a guest bedroom, and even though it is at the far end of the house, it streams HD and 4K content without a problem.
