Product description
All-in-One Device — Clear Up Your Desk
TP-LINK's N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router TD-W8980 is an incredibly robust all-in-one device which contains features of an ADSL2+ Modem, a N600 Dual Band Router, a 4-Port Gigabit Switch, and a USB Print Server. It saves your budget and space in contrast to buying several devices separately. The downstream bandwidth of the modem can reach up to 24 Mbps, meeting the needs for most home and office service plans.
Simultaneous Dual Band — More Bandwidth, Less Interference
Two separate wireless networks are broadcasted on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously with up to 300 Mbps over each band. The traditional 2.4 GHz band provides larger range and is great for basic Internet uses, while the 5 GHz band gives faster wireless speed and handles bandwidth-heavy tasks like online gaming and HD streaming. Now you can enjoy both advantages of the two bands by just having one device.
Full Gigabit Ports — More Power to You
The 4-port built-in switch of the TD-W8980 transfers data at up to 1000 Mbps, which is ideal for your wired network. You can use the Ethernet ports for printer, NAS, TV, and other network devices so that users can all share those devices through the wireless or wired connection.
Two USB Ports — Easy Sharing
- Share a Printer. It is common that multiple users share the same printer in the network. With the TL-WR1043ND, you can simply connect your printer to the USB port on the back of the router and print wirelessly.
- Share Files & Media. Attach a storage device such as a flash drive or hard drive to the router, and users in the local network can all get access to the files saved in the drive. The router also has a built-in FTP server so that users can visit the storage device remotely.
Two Work Modes for Flexible Uses
The TD-W8980 provides two work modes to choose from: ADSL Modem Router Mode and Wireless Router Mode. If you are using ADSL service to get Internet, select the first mode. If you are using a cable, fiber, or other types of Internet service, select the second mode and configure it as a pure wireless router. Such flexibility saves your investment and is useful when you decide to change your service provider.
Easy To Use
The TD-W8980 comes with a Quick Setup Wizard in its Web management page that leads you through a step-by-step process to set up your modem router. You don't need to install any software or use a CD to finish the setup. Within minutes, your modem router will be up and running.

CONS: started dropping connections wired or wireless, stopped connecting external hard drive over the share ports.
I originally purchased this to replace the actiontec router I currently lease from centurylink. I was hoping to increase my wireless/wired speeds as well as add an external hard drive to the network for file sharing and media streaming. A secondary plus would be the fact that I could return the actiontec and no longer have to pay a monthly lease for having it.
First thing I found after getting this is that my centurylink internet connection is not ADSL,(which I was told it was when I first called to ask centurylink) but it was actually VDSL. So because VDSL offers much better speeds, this would make the ADSL router incompatible with my internet. With it also supporting the WAN I decided to give it a try, so I used it in wireless router mode, instead of the modem mode. Let me tell you it worked great, I was able to get twice the speeds I was getting, wired or wireless, from the actiontec. Plus having the hard drive over the network was fantastic.
After only about 2 days though I started having problems. If I would put any strain on the router other then just simple internet browsing I would loss connection. So anytime I tried to play a game, or transfer large files, I would be tossed from the network. At first I was wanting to blame it on my wireless network card of my laptop, so I starting using Ethernet, because I sit literally 2 feet away from the router so it wasn't that much of a problem. It did seem to take care of the problem, but only for a time. First time I tried to transfer some larger then normal files to my hard drive(26gb) I lost my Ethernet connection. The difference now is even after resetting the router, rebooting the laptop, and everything else, it now will not connect my hard drive. So unfortunately I will be returning this router.
The good
+ The software included with this is awesome. I can limit bandwidth based on IP and set IP based on mac addresses. I can give certain devices a higher priority for bandwidth and give all devices a minimum bandwidth. When running thinks like torrents other devices can still use the internet reasonably well. Since we often have roommates who wish to use the same internet as they please this is really nice.
+ It doubles as a router and a modem. When we switched to cable I didn't have to buy a new wireless device. Setting this up was really simple and painless.
+ Wired speeds are fantastic and relaible, Wireless n speeds are also pretty good.
The Bad
- Wireless 2.4 ghz is notoriously unreliable. Devices fail to connect frequently, are booted off frequently, and get unreliable connections frequently. This unreliability seems to be a roll of the dice for each individual device. My acer aspire one has never had an issue in any part of the house. My desktop struggles to maintain a stable connection, but is at least always connected. My roommate's tablet and phone frequently fail to connect entirely. I'd write this off as issues with range or interference, but devices have the same connection issues when they are sitting next to the router.
- Wireless range did not meet my expectations slightly. It reaches every part of the house, but I did not notice any improvement to range over cheaper devices.
- This device still needs to be reset intermittently due to heat. For the price, I was disappointed by this. Why are heatsinks such a foreign concept in the router business? I wouldn't be surprised if flopping a heatsink or a fan on this solved most the issues I have with it. I live in Florida, so I'll give it some slack.
Conclusion
This device met my needs by the skin of its teeth. I enjoy all the features, the software is great, and the price is good. The issues with 2.4ghz wireless are really killing me though. Having to go downstairs and unplug the device was an inconvenience I was really expecting to be spared from. Gaming on the 2.4ghz also included much heartbreak. The wireless connection isn't reliable enough for good LAN gaming. Its not any worse then the woes I have with cheap store-bought devices here, but I was expecting an improvement.
Besides heat and unreliable 2.4ghz wireless, the device is good. Maybe I'll cut her open and put some heatsinks on it and see if any issues are resolved.

- Buen precio
Contras:
it can definitely handle a lot of devices on the network that older units cannot (hence the dropping connection), and works well all throughout a medium-large sized home. i've even used wi-fi out in the backyard. i was really sceptical buying into a brand i had never heard before but i read some reviews and we decided to try it out, really impressed. hopefully other people experience the same quality of service we did!
I dont know why it happens in such a expensive product that is for home use. I use to connect simultaneously near about 5 to 8 devices as now a days I think we found in each home like mobiles, tablet, smart tv, laptop.
Very dissapointing by seeing this
