Product Description
Wireless N USB Adapter TL-WN821N allows you to connect a desktop or notebook computer to a wireless network and access high-speed Internet connection. Comply with IEEE 802.11n, they provide wireless speed up to 300Mbps, which is beneficial for the online gaming or even HD video streaming. Wireless N - Speed & Range. With MIMO (multiple input, multiple output antennas) technology, it shows more excellent abilities of mitigating data loss over long distances and through obstacles in a small office or a large apartment, even in a steel-and-concrete building. CCA Technology - Stable Wireless Signals. Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) automatically avoids channel conflicts using its clear channel selection feature and fully realizes the advantages of channel binding, greatly enhanced the wireless performance. WPA/WPA2 Encryptions - Advanced Security. As for the security of WI-FI connection, WEP encryption has been no longer the strongest and safest guards for outside intrusions. TL-WN821N provides WPA/WPA2 encryptions that are created by the WI-FI Alliance industry group, promoting interpretabilities and security for WLAN, which could effectively and efficiently protect the wireless network. One Button Security Setup. Compatible with WI-FI Protected Setup (WPS), TL-WN821N features Quick Security Setup that allows users to almost instantly setup their security simply by pressing the "QSS" button automatically establishing a WPA2 secure connection, which is more security compared with WEP encryptions. Not only is this faster than normal secure setups but more convenient in that you don't need to remember a password! Bundled CD for Easy Operation. TL-WN821N comes with a CD with utility that helps you complete the software installation and wireless network settings, including security configurations and wireless connection, which is convenient for users, even for novice users. Frequency Range: 2.400-2.4835GHz; Interface Available: USB 2.0; System Requirement: Windows 8.1/8(32/64bits) Windows 7(32/64bits) Windows Vista(32/64bits) Windows XP(32/64bits) , Mac OS X 10.7~10.10 Linux; Wireless Standards: IEEE 802.11n IEEE 802.11g IEEE 802.11b

The current version is v5 and uses a Realtek chipset (8192eu), which is okay but is not nearly as good as the original Atheros chipset of the v1.
Not to mention support on Linux for example, is terrible (only certain kernels supported, patch and code yourself for support of recent kernels, does not use standard kernel wifi stack)
Of course, nowhere it is specified on the Amazon page that this is version 5, so it's mostly all about luck or how much Googlin'g you've done before buying.
Any wireless manager might work, but this is how I did it because I use openbox (no desktop):
$ sudo apt-get install iw wpasupplicant wicd
$ sudo apt-get purge network-manager connman # wicd, network-manager and connman are mutually exclusive
$ sudo /etc/init.d/dbus reload
$ sudo /etc/init.d/wicd start
$ wicd-client -n # GUI setup
My laptop has Win 7, installation was simple I had downloaded the newest driver first from TP-Links website and installed without a hitch.
It typically connects with a strong signal throughout the house and at 70 feet away outside still maintains a strong connection typically over 1mb file transfer speeds even at that distance.
With my laptop I did find one problem.
I have a Gear Head wireless mouse I use at times instead of the touch pad. The mouse runs on a 2.4ghz frequency which can at times stop the wireless card dead in its tracks. That is more of an issue with the mouse than the card, After making sure in the router setup that I had it on a separate channel there was no more interference.
My wife's desktop has Windows XP. I downloaded the most up to date driver first like with the laptop.
I was replacing the wireless b card she had been using. Due to placement in the house using a wired connection was not feasible.
Setup was simple and quick.
The connection is strong but for some reason on XP it can be very sluggish. Her system is a dual core intel with 4gb of ram and is quite speedy.
Most of the time it works fine but for some reason I have not been able to determine yet it will bog down be it web pages or files transfers . This did not happen with her old card and the new one is still faster but this is a mystery so far.
Overall an excellent USB WiFi card when used above Win XP.
It got here earlier then I expected, (I was expecting a week, got it in 3 days!) was super easy to install, and it receives the signal from my router loud and clear. (A solid 5 bar!)
I would give it 5 stars, except for one little irritating thing it does. It keeps randomly disconnecting me! It'll be fine for hours at a time, then suddenly it keeps disconnecting, over and over, for a 5 or 10 minute (or so) spurts. Then just as suddenly, it's completely fine again!
I have no idea WHY it keeps going that, but whatever. It's a little annoying, but it's manageable. /shrugs/

Size and Design:
The best part about this is that it is very compact in size and very sober and elegant in design. This is a big plus as it is easy plug in and use, add to it the good sober design.
Build Quality:
The build quality is undoubtedly superb. Just no qualms about that, at all. When held, it doesnt give off that cheap and flimsy product-like feeling. It is good sturdy with its build quality.
Packaging:
This part is also a big plus as the item was well cushioned and packaged with all the necessary items that ensured that no damage could have been caused to the product during transportation. This ensures that I as a customer have received something not damaged internally already.
Software:
This is actually good but not great part with the product.
The good part is that a CD has been provided with it along with a manual.
The not great part is that NO LINUX SUPPORT has been given from Version 2 onwards. This is bad, really.
Speed:
It easily supports net speeds upto 300 Mbps. Practically speaking, I have tested it at my home and it easily supports net speed of over 100-150 Mbps without a sigh.
On testing I found that it did connect to 5GHz network, without any issue.
Connectivity:
Please mark its not feet its metres. Multiply metres x 3 to get the distance in feet.
It easily connects to my laptop or phone from 7 metres across one room. So thats 21 feet. I mean even our old bluetooth used to connect to about 15 ft.
So 20-25 feet is not at all an issue with this. This is the big plus I found with the product.
Experience:
From this point of view, so far except the linux non-compatibility issue, I found no other flaws with this product.
So overall its a great product.
Warranty:
Its 3 years so I am assured that atleast for 3 years I am tension-free and not just 1 year, contrary to most electronic items today that only provide 1 year warranty with their items.

What I did to make it work straight away was:
Put it into a USB port before installing Ubuntu (I use 14.04 LTS) and then connect to your WiFi network as soon as it appears at the beginning of installation. Then tick Download Updates While Installing when it appears during installation. If like me you have a laptop then don't forget to connect its charger whilst installing. Once Ubuntu is installed your WiFi should be fine.
If you are using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and your internet is non-working then this might fix it. Disconnect the WiFi and reconnect then type (or right-click copy/paste) the following one line at a time in a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) press enter each time and type password once:
sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-$(uname -r) linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms git
git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes
sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.10
sudo depmod -a
echo "blacklist rtl8192cu" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Now you should have decent speed WiFi once you have rebooted your PC/Laptop (sudo reboot). Make sure you save any open files first.
If it's still a bit slow type or copy/paste the following:
sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/8192cu-disable-power-management.conf /etc/modprobe.d/
Press enter, type password then enter again, reboot and all should be well.
As with all Ubuntu don't forget to firewall it once you are logged in.
In case you don't know how to:
Press CTRL+ ALT +T then the terminal will pop up. Type sudo ufw enable then press enter, type your password and press enter again.
Your PC/Laptop will then be firewalled.
Windows no doubt needs a driver but there is a disc included and instuctions. I haven't tried it in Windows but I'm sure if the driver isn't on the disc you can download it from TP-Link's website. The adapter also comes with a USB extension cable so the adapter doesn't have to be in the back of a PC. This adapter is a fabulous affordable and easy way to add fast WiFi to any Laptop or PC :)
Noticed that the tp-link Wireless N USB detection is weak detecting the wifi signal,
Ordered a new tp-link wifi . Still surprised to see tp-link Wireless N USB Adapter is not able to detect tp-link wifi.
Then i ordered tp-link extender thinking that the distance is more then 40 feet.
TP-Link wireless adapter is not still working as expected.
Since this exercise took more then 3 month , now i can't return my TP-Link wireless adapter
i rated it 3 stars only because of the trouble i had to go through to get the correct drivers installed
With the wrong drivers (given in the CD-they're older) i got only a 0.5mbps connection on a 50mbps network.
I then used Windows' update driver feature from device manager and still no luck with the udpated driver.
After a lot of searching around i went to the tp link site and then on checking the label on the network adapter it said US/V6
This had separate drivers on the site which was not installed by the provided CD or Windows.(EU drivers gave slow speeds as well)
After installing these drivers, the device worked as intended.
This was the case with my desktop computer, but when i tried to configure the adapter on my laptop (also Windows 10 x64) it worked with the drivers that Windows installed itself (plug and play basically).
Although these drivers were different from the one on the site(there was no 2016 version on the site) , they still worked. On the laptop the windows update installed a 2016 driver (which i was not able to install on my PC for some reason)
While the latest version from the site was a 2019 version.
So make sure to check the region (US/EU) of the adapter you recieve and install appropriate drivers.
This may not be the case for everyone as can be seen with other reviews, but if you encounter extremely slow speeds, try installing the correct drivers from the tplink site.
Additionally, it does not connect through 5g channel. Only 2.4Ghz is detected.
