PCI= old PCI interface. PCI X1= new version of PCI that is for expansion cards to add functions not built into the motherboard. This card uses X1 PCI X16= replaced outdate AGP slot and is for video cards, slot is longer than X1 and normally has a retainer clip on the back of the slot. there is an older version of PCI, I cant recall the name but its long and black. if you have that slot your system is likely running either windows 3.1, 95, or maybe 98. *update 4/12/2016** still working great, no driver issues and connection rarely has problems and when it does its normally the router at fault. Download Windows 10 driver from TP-link site (under Support, Archer T9E, Windows 10 driver) -- this is a zipped file and unpacks to a SETUP application file. You run it and it says the driver is installed --- but really nothing happens, DM says there is no driver... Why? Because you MUST DISABLE the existing Network Interface Device first! Once you do this (then reboot) the Setup runs perfectly and all is well. On motherboards the USB panel will have two rows one with Four pin and another 5 pin, you have to connect the bluetooth cable to 4 pin part. Now I got stuck again which way the four pin should go. Time to open up your Motherboard manual online or the book to see which pin is what or Google USB panel motherboard for Images and top five will give you which one is D+ and D- on the four pin panel. Connect and enjoy Bluetooth on this card. Now back to review - Excellent card for the price and I max out on my Upload and Download speeds to my ISP rate all times. No more long LAN cables around my house and the connection hasn't dropped since then with great speeds. I use Windows 10 preview build and the drivers installed without any glitch automatically for both Wi-fi and Bluetooth. Didn't even use the CD provided with the box. So far I'm happy with my purchase on this card and my other choice was TP-Link Archer card but only reason I didn't get was no bluetooth on that card. Sleep problems, but I fixed them...

Needed upgrade for aging IBM A31 laptop

I did the complete upgrade of wifes old laptop. RAM was bumped up to 1GB (max), a Transcend 60GB PATA SSD, new battery, and to complete the package: this internal N-speed wireless adapter.

Windows 7 Pro 32-bit (90-day free from Microsoft) was used in this upgrade to ensure all was good, before I make purchase decision for operating system. Windows 8.1 90-day could not install due to CPU requirement for NX feature on CPU.

I opened the backplate on the bottom of the trusty old IBM A30 (desktop replacement circa 2000). They don't make machines like this anymore. Talk about upgrades ... Windows 2000 ... 512MB RAM upgrade ... Windows XP and now a complete refresh. I really enjoy upgrading and fixing old things to keep them going.

For the software device driver, I connected the laptop to an Ethernet cable and then used device driver from Windows update. There was no software or other things in retail package, but out of date software on CD is really not needed when you can get the latest driver online. Once the driver installed, I was able to connect to wireless network. This upgrade was needed so I can be full N-speed, as a mixed wireless topology defaulted to the lowest adapter speed (G). Not anymore.

I would highly recommend and may do the same for an old T30, which is using a wired connection at the access port (also needs battery replacement).

Eazy Wi-Fi

Here's my deal. I'm technically inclined and was given a laptop by a friend.
It had a built in A,B (54mbps)mode wireless and I wanted the best available which is 300mbps(at least for now)
Since I hate dongles, I immediately opened the built in Wi-fi compartment to see what was in there.
Voila a mini-PCI card.
Doing some web searching I found quite a few but most were more than I wanted to pay.

I saw it was a mini-PCI @ a great price too, and simply ordered this one.
Once this card arrived it was up and running in less than 5 minutes.
1.) Remove screw holding wi-fi cover.
2.)Disconnect 2 mini cables to the mini-PCI card
3.)Pop out the old mini PCI card
4.)in with the new
5.)Reconnect the 2 mini cables
6.)close it up and put in the screw.
It took longer for the ol' PC to boot than it did to swap out the wi-fi card.
Installed the drivers and was up an running at 150Mbps through out my apartment.

The only thing I had to do to get 300Mbps was change the router settings to the following:
I only use "N" so

Network Mode: Wireless N only, (I'm not sure if you can set this to mixed but its worth a try if that's your environment)
Channel Width: Wide-40Mhz Channel
Wide Channel: Auto

I get 300mbps everywhere in the house and beyond.
Just how far beyond (outside) I don't know just yet.
All in all for the money I spent this was a great deal.
You can spend a lot more for a 300mpbs mini-PCI card but why?
Very easy to install, works great, really cant ask for more.

Decent power and range, best chipset choice for open source

The atheros chipset has solid and mature driver support; it's ideal for linux based systems, especially embedded systems like DD-WRT and OpenWRT.

TX power is 100mW or 20dBi, which is about as good as consumer cards get. It's 2.4GHz only, which is fairly typical. I'm seeing about 3x the real-world data throughput I got with the G card it replaced, and that's through a couple of walls.

No, you will never see 300Mbps with this or any other N card in this class: that's a marketing number. If you're in an uncrowded area and it can select 40MHz channel width at both ends of the connection, you might just get a 300Mbps link, but even then actual raw data throughput in any direction will be about half that. Expect realistically to get a 130Mbps link under good conditions, with a real world transfer rate in each direction of between 60 and 70Mbps. Compare that with maybe 22Mbps for G.

Nice speed boost for my old laptop

I just got this installed in my old Dell Inspiron 5160. I had an Intel ProSet 802.11g card in it, but when I got an 802.11n wifi router, I wanted to upgrade my laptop to use the extra speed. I had a hard time finding "N" cards that were mini PCI (and not mini PCI Express). I still couldn't seem to find anyone claiming this card would work in this particular Dell, but the form factor was right, and I read a few reviews of this card and figured it was worth a try at a little over $20. It wouldn't be the most I've ever gambled on a computer part.

It came from Beach Audio in a little box with a 3" cd with the drivers and docs. I installed the drivers, then when it asked to reboot, I did a shutdown instead and installed the card. Absolutely no issues with the fit or with the antenna leads reaching the jacks.

Buttoned it up, fired it up, and after the OS found the hardware and did the setup, I ran the wifi manager software, put in my wpa key and I was good to go.

I checked the drivers on the website, and the ones that came on the CD are the latest ones, so I didn't bother downloading them.

This card works great so far, and I can finally watch streaming videos without a lot of buffering and stuttering. I am running WinXP pro SP3. Works great.
