You may save a few bucks with the USB adapters, but I've been through enough of them to know that they are highly unreliable. This TP-LINK Archer T8E AC1750 is the best Wi-Fi adapter I have ever used. It installed easily and works perfectly with my Windows 8.1 PC. I purchased one for my husband's Windows 7 computer also & he is just as happy with the Archer T8E as I am.
1. This card give an extremely stable internet connection (I'm using Windows 7 64bit)
2. AC 5GHZ has 50% less Range of 5GHZ N
3. If you are very far from the router or you have a thick wall your signal will degrade
4. You do not measure strength in bars, view your connection speed
5. If you want better range you need to buy some good quality antennas (not the cheap antennas on amazon)
I have been using this card for a few weeks now and I do love this card, I was using a TP-Link ac1200 usb adapter with the external antennas and it did work good but my internet connection would be all over the place. I do not game but I am connected to my server and I need a stable connection transferring files and working on files directly from the server so the USB adapter was not doing it for me.
Now as far as this card goes, I had to re position my computer to get better signal, At first I was getting about 250mbs connection then I moved it to the other side of my desk and now I have 600mps (3ft), You do not want to have it in an enclosed space or somewhere that your body will be blocking the signal, I am about 20 ft away from the router, the router is an TP-LINK Archer C8 the signal has to pass through 3 solid wood closet doors, and a wall with double 5/8" drywall (crazy I know). Still I get about 3 bars and a solid connection.
I will order some larger antennas like the ones that come with the asus ac1900 for a better connection speed.
All in all this is a great card and amazing connection speed and quality bit you should research how WIFI signals work and how AC wireless devices work because things have changed as far as ABGN goes.
Speeds: I was getting only 2-3 MB/s with my old DW1501 card to my Zyxel wired NAS. With this one, on 5 GHz band, I'm now getting 8-10. Still far from Gigabit by 10x but maybe I can blame that in part on distance to the router- 2 rooms away. Direct wire-to-wire connection gave me 20-25 or so. Will continue to diagnose but at least it's better. Download/upload speeds to internet are 20% better than these numbers and probably limited by FiOS.
For installation headaches and loser customer support I give it a 3. If I had miraculously gotten even 1/3 of Gb/s instead of 1/10th I would give it a 4. If I can convince it to do that I'll re-rate.
