I needed to figure out what was intermittently popping the main breaker in my home's electrical system and since everything appeared to be working and there were no obvious "smoke means fire" culprits I needed an actual tester to find the problem.

TPI's A251 current clamp found my problem, though not without a)additional hardware, and b) some electronics skill.

The probe itself is fine. If you have a voltmeter that can accurately read AC milivolts you are all set, but most meters really aren't all that accurate at low AC voltages.

I wound up cutting off the dual shielded banana plug that came standard with the probe and soldering in a BNC connector so I could use it on my old Fluke 97 oscilloscope. The TPI probe's shielded banana plug's center to center spacing is the standard 0.75"(19.05mm) but I couldn't find my banana to bnc adapters and I couldn't find any replacement adapters on Amazon that were both 19.05mm and cheap enough(hello Prime shipping) to bother with.

After hooking up the TPI current probe and setting my scope to monitor for a few hours I found my hot water heater was occasionally shorting out and drawing far too much current.

I haven't done any accuracy testing for various ranges but for $50 it's close enough.

Final thoughts: The probe itself is fine. It would be *really* nice if someone would sell dual banana to BNC adapters that were both 19.05mm on center(CLEARLY STATED AS SUCH) AND capable of accepting shielded banana plugs AND shipping with Amazon Prime.
