Connecting up was easy, I used a couple of homeplugs and a POE injector. First problem was that the supplied software couldn't find the cameras so I FING to find them and configured them manually. First impressions were good - decent image quality, reasonable field of view, good frame rate. The units are big enough to be a visible deterrent, but not so big that they look unsightly when dotted around your property. They are fairly light but the mounting surface is metal and sturdy.
After a firmware update to 5.1.7 and physically installing the camera I then tried to configure email notifications via Windows Live using SSL. There was no test button on the email page so I enabled motion detection and increased the detection sensitivity, but I never get any emails when a motion detection event was logged. I tried Gmail with the same result. Next I tried to get it to save video to a new share my QNAP TS-419P, but no matter what I do it always says the storage is unavailable. Then I tried a share on a Windows 7 PC. Better, the camera saw the share and allowed me to format the folder (formatting appears to pre-allocate the space on the share by writing a series of 256MB .MP4 and .PIC files to it) but when motion was detected nothing was saved. I tried a share on a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller and also a member server, all with the same result - the camera saw the share, formatted it and reported its capacity and free space but never stored any videos on it despite motion trigger events being logged.
The most frustrating thing about this is the logs on the camera.Read more ›
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. To record to your NAS device please ensure you record to a root folder. Do not record to a subfolder or directly to the root itself. This should allow you to utilize the QNAP device.
For the email settings, please ensure that under Events > Snapshot that you have enabled the Event-Triggered option. This will allow you to configure the resolution, frequency and number of snapshots to include in an email. If you need assistance with the camera please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible.
1) The video feed is usually upside down. The "Mirror" setting keeps changing from "Default" to "Vertical". I change it back to default, but after a day or two, this setting will change automatically to "Vertical".
2) The night vision is cloudy, almost like there's fog every night. When our motion light comes on, the picture improves and the fog goes away. See attached picture. I have played around with the IR settings and white balance, but nothing fixes it.
Very disappointed in this purchase.
We are sorry to hear about your experience with the TV-IP311PI. The image setting should not be changing without a configuration change. The image appears to have some IR bleeding. Please ensure the foam ring is flush against the dome and that the dome is clean. Avoid placing objects that may reflect the IR light back onto the surface of the dome as well. Update the camera with the latest firmware update from our website to see if that resolves the issue with the mirror setting. If you continue to experience this issue please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will have a support representative assist you with warranty services. Please include a link to this review.
Took about two hours to figure out the geeky bits (running my own isolated DHCP server was the hardest part).
At default settings (2MP / medium video quality),
I can read license plates at night from a VLC screen at about 30 feet;
with one notch higher settings (3MP / higher video quality) range is about 50 feet,
with no lighting except the IR LEDs built into the camera.
I did this on Ubuntu 14.04, ignoring all the software that came with the camera;
the system's VLC was sufficient to connect to the camera and view video.
I have yet to try it with zoneminder, but I hear that works. My only worry is
that it'll eat too much CPU when I add a few more cameras, but given the
quality of the images, that's a worry I don't yet mind having.
Word to the wise: either run this on an isolated network, or change the password,
or both. The camera has open ssh and http, so putting this on the open internet
is asking for it.
I gave four stars instead of five because the web admin app requires a plugin
to do any viewing, so of course it didn't work. Plugin? Really, guys? How about HTML5 as God intended? :-)

If you leave the resolution at dynamic - it stays at 320x240 - which is total not good resolution. ( edited for content )
