In short, its storing two passwords and there is no way for me to correct it, or restore to default. I tried calling TrendNet but without PAYING for premium support they wouldn't help at all. Steer clear of this camera and this company in general.
The user interface software on these was really dated and since it was browser based it was kind of laggy. Waste of money.
I thought that installing this camera would be quite straightforward and quick, and so I timed my set up effort, expecting to be able to say something like, “I had it up and running in about 20 minutes”, but that was simply not the case. In fact, after two hours of installing, uninstalling, re-installing, wireless set up, wired set up, and everything I could think to do, and although I confirmed the camera was working (see below), I couldn’t get a picture on my computer or my phone. Of course, without working software, I also had no way to control the camera, making it essentially useless.
I followed the not-always-completely-clear-or-helpful instructions for wireless set up using WPS. My expensive new D-link AC router knew what to do after I pushed the WPS button, but the camera failed to find the network on the first try. It succeeded on the second try. As soon as the camera came on, the audio function conflicted with my computer’s Bose sound system, creating a huge bass hum that shook the floor. I had to turn off the sound system. Inside the set up app, I could see what the camera saw, so things were looking good, but every attempt to set up the browser software failed at the plug-in stage. I tried three different browsers and all failed. No worries, because I have an iPhone. I installed the TrendNet app on the phone, filled in the fields and away we went … to an error screen. Authentication failed. This was probably because it asked for an ID, but the software didn’t provide a way to input a new ID during the setup process. So, redo. Same thing. Authentication failed. I plugged up everything with wires and tried again. Same result with all browsers failing to install the plug-in. I searched for some solutions online, but best I could determine, this camera is just tough to set up and it is unclear if it is compatible with Windows 10. I read through some of the troubleshooting docs on the CD
I don’t know if Windows 10 is the culprit or something else. It could also be some browser incompatibility, but that doesn’t explain the problem with the phone app. The inability to get the phone app working is just a mystery. In the end, I unplugged everything, uninstalled all the software and apps, and put everything back in the box. We may at some point try to install this on our older Mac, but for now, this camera just failed, on every level except the in app set up on the computer. I think giving it two stars is more than generous for a device that was impossible to set up, completely and correctly, through no fault of my own.
In fact, this was one of the easiest installations I have had of a TRENDnet camera.
I have 4 TRENDnet cameras in all that are installed on my property. I have two older model IC cameras ( IP851IC ) in addition to a PoE camera outside.
I like the TRENDnet IC ( Cloud ) cameras because it's quick and easy to access the camera via the internet using the phone app. For a family where there is only one 'techie' ( me !), "ease of use" is the most important aspect. If the family can't quickly access the camera live view, then there will be no end to the headaches.
I do expect installation and configuration to take somewhere between 30-60 minutes to get things right, but once installed and configured, the use of the camera should be very easy. The "IC" cameras and the phone app allow quick access and from a phone usage standpoint, its fairly easy to access and use.
I found this newer model camera TV-IP862IC the easiest to date to install and configure. The wizards are helpful in getting the camera basics in place and up and running quickly. You can then fine-tune your configuration to fit your environment, going from just "working" to "working as planned" rather quickly. It still took me an hour to get things completed with features like motion detection and storing of video/images correctly configured, but that is to be expected.
A few caveats:
- I don't not use the TRENDnet pro software so I can't tell you how difficult that is to use and manage.
- TRENDnet seems to be easy to install, the biggest issue I have found is firmware updates. In my opinion, these have been a nightmare. I'm hoping that my first firmware update on this new camera will be smoother.
- I'm still figuring out the 'patrol' feature. I do find that the instructions for the various features to be rather sparse and basic. I always end up having to open a support ticket or two on "how to" properly use some of the features.
