How it Works

How to Use

Shake dry shampoo vigorously before use and also in between sprays.
Lift sections of dry hair and spray lightly at roots using short bursts, holding 8-12 inches from head.
After 1-2 minutes, use fingertips to massage in.
Brush out and style as usual.

If clogging occurs, remove nozzle and rinse nozzle under warm water. Then re-attach nozzle.

Buying a dry shampoo can be a daunting task since it requires your going out and buying (and buying and buying and buying…) many potentially worthless products until you get to the good one. I’m posting this review and will update it whenever I have any new product comparison to add to help those folks who need comparative feedback.

Disclaimer: My hair is dark, thick, extremely long, and wavy with oily roots and dry ends. So please keep in mind the results may not be the same for you if your hair is different.

Batiste dry shampoo Original: Leaves white residue, need to brush off thoroughly before barely getting rid of the matte, gray residue. Doesn’t clean extremely well and thickens the hair due to the powdery deposit that’s hard to remove. Smells like nondescript citrus, unisex fragrance, similar to generic hand soap.

Batiste dry shampoo Cherry: Leaves white residue, need to brush off thoroughly before barely getting rid of the matte, gray residue. I wouldn’t call this a juicy fruity smell that you sometimes get from good shampoos. The fragrance is on the feminine side.

Garnier Volume Extend dry shampoo: Leaves white residue but goes away as you massage you scalp clean. It doesn’t clean well, doesn’t volumize, and only serves to deodorize the hair. Smells exactly like most Garnier Fructis products; like tropical fruits & citrus. Lovely & refreshing.

Herbal Essences Color Me Happy dry shampoo: Absorbs the oil well as long as you dump a fair amount of the product into your hair. The unfortunate consequence of this “dumping” however, thickens and volumizes the hair to a point where it hurts to comb fingers through. Hair becomes hard and tough to style. Some folks with fine/limp hair may actually appreciate this. Smells exactly like HE Color me Happy shampoo. The fragrance is that of sweet roses. It is on the perfume-y and feminine side. Very lovely.

Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing dry shampoo: Cleans very effectively without leaving any residue behind. Hair becomes silky and easy to comb through. Truly a “just washed and done” effect. Smells like nondescript powdery citrus. Smells generic but refreshing nevertheless.

Tresemme Fresh Start dry shampoo: Cleans effectively without leaving much of a residue behind. Hair becomes slightly thickened due to leftover powder so this may be good news for those of you who seek to add volume to your hair. Smells like bright, sweet citrus. The price point and availability at every corner makes this an attractive choice.

TIGI Bed Head Matte dry shampoo: Cleans with low-to-mediocre effectiveness. Leaves behind quite a bit of white powdery streaks that can be eliminated by thorough brushing. Though, if you have wavy hair like me, you may not appreciate having to brush your dry, powdery roots. I always end up looking like part-broccoli / part-hedgehog after that is done. The smell is a syrupy sweet mango/vanilla concoction. It's very strong AND persistent - you have been warned. :) The inexplicably high price makes it this a bad purchase for me.

SheaMoisture Peace Rose Oil dry shampoo: Cleans with effectively. Doesn’t leave a residue behind, even on my pitch black hair. Because it is a powder you squeeze out of a bottle (non-aerosol), it didn't give me that "choking feeling" I get from spraying dry shampoo all over my head. The smell was a true rose oil scent. It is on the feminine side, so those who prefer a neutral or masculine fragrance might not like it. It is long lasting but stays close so that you don’t “advertise” your hair fragrance throughout the day, so to speak. Lasted a long time as well. Has a volumizing effect too, in case that's also important to you. It looks small but it lasted longer than its spray counterparts. One drawback was that because my hair is so thick, it made it rigid too. Maybe this particular issue is not the product’s fault but my own head. I suppose thick hair is doomed to be rigid if you dump powder all over it. All in all, I’d rather deal with this problem than the rest. Oh, and one more thing I really liked about this product is that it has very natural ingredients that don’t bother sick folks, cancer patients, asthma sufferers, etc. It *seems* safer than the spray cans so far. (I might just keep buying this until the inevitable discontinuation happens. Why is that any product I love like shoes, lipstick, perfume, vitamin supplement, etc. ALWAYS gets discontinued quickly? Does that happen to you too? :-] )

Hope this comparison helped you. Look out for updates as I continue to search for a great dry shampoo that doesn’t leave residue, cleans effectively, doesn’t make the hair rigid, smells awesome and, most important, one that is affordable.

Adds volume to fine hair as well..!!

Oh, my goodness, I never want to be without this stuff... If have fine hair and I usually like to go for about 3 days between shampoos... but I just hate the first day when I wash my hair because it is so limp and won't do anything... Enter TRESemme Fresh start shampoo, Volumizing.... I use this after I wash my hair and either air dry or blow dry..... it immediately adds volume... I used to try to get the volume with hairspray, but most were too sticky... this stuff does the trick and it smells good too... I would imagine there are products out there for three times as much, marketed for volumizing, that wouldn't do the trick as well is this product... I will be stocking up...!!

Leaves hair sticky, doesn't remove oil, smells awful

Definitely one of the worst dry shampoos I've used. My hair is left sticky and hard. The product is hard to spread around and usually just sticks to wherever it was sprayed, leaving a sticky, white residue even after brushing.

But perhaps my biggest complaint is that the shampoo simply doesn't clean well. It gets rid of maybe ~50% of the oil? And even with that, my hair looks worse than before using it, now that it's both sticky and oily. I'm not noticing any volumizing effects either.

And finally, the smell is quite unpleasant. Nothing too unbearable but it has a strong hairspray-like aerosol smell. Overall, I'm a much bigger fan of Dove's Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo, which actually cleans and volumizes my hair, despite also having a strong aerosol scent.

Hair feels dirty and stiff after using

I've been using the Batiste dry shampoo for a while, but decided to try this one out cause it got good reviews. I have long, fine, straight, blond hair. It doesn't quite do the job or making it look less greasy. It also left my hair feeling like there was tons of product in it and stuff. It got tangled really easily after putting this in my hair and my hair doesn't normally tangle. By the next day, i couldn't wait to wash my hair cause it felt so dirty. I will finish the bottle cause I don't like to waste things, but I almost feel like it's damaging my hair. I will not be buying this again and will go back to my trusted Batiste!

Waste of money!!!! Did not do the job. My hair felt and looked nasty. My head was very itchy. I had no other choice than washing my hair with real shampoo.

An underwhelming dry shampoo

I've tried a few dry shampoo products; this is less effective than others. It's not going to make your hair look worse, but it doesn't accomplish all that it advertises.

It kind of absorbs oil, but you have to use a lot of product to get a marginal difference. It also leaves a white layer that has to be thoroughly brushed out.

There is no volumizing action whatsoever.

TBH, there are much better dry shampoos out there that are just as cheap as this one.

Does the job but the "no residue" promise is false (at least on my dark hair). Without quality control (check the back of your head too!), you could leave the house with white patches. If you are thorough in rubbing the product in, it won't show up white but does dull your roots and add a slight grayishness. Hair will feel dry, brittle as well. However, it saves me a shampoo, so I gave it 3 stars.
I will use up my bottles but I prefer another dry shampoo that's made specifically for dark hair and leaves a dark residue rather than a white one.

I've tried what feels like a million different dry shampoos and believe it or not, this low-cost one if my favorite! Not only does it quickly absorb the oil in my hair, but it give my hair some definite volume and texture. Sometimes I wake up in the morning thinking I most definitely need to wash my hair until I spray this on it and then I feel fresh all day.

I also think this is the best-smelling of the dry shampoos I've tried. It's very fresh-smelling without being overpowering at all. I love it so much, I finally signed up for Amazon's subscription service.

Leaves it more oily

I have long, dark brown hair that gets oily after just a few hours of washing. This stuff doesn't help at all. It actually leaves it feeling and looking more oily.
