As a former employee of TWA, I finally decided to dig into the Flight 800 tragedy. During my 15 years with the firm, I wonder how many times I was a member of the crew that loaded/unloaded/serviced this particular 747. The few times I flew on a 747, I can’t help but wonder if I flew on this particular aircraft. So, in a way, as a onetime member of the “family” I have a personal interest in the story.

Jack Cashill is to be lauded for the research and work he has put into the fate of TWA 800. Yet, his book leaves me somewhat unsatisfied. Over twenty years ago, perhaps ten years after resigning from TWA, I crossed paths with a TWA mechanic I had known on the job, and asked him point blank, in his opinion, what happened? He said, “it was shot down.” Cashill all but confirms that 800 was shot down, but his book loses its way on the supposed cover-up and conspiracy.

The eyewitness accounts are the one compelling force used by Cashill that focuses on the “crash” itself. Yet, the lack of pictures or diagrams does not help his cause. Perhaps this is reason enough for a reader new to the topic to not begin with Cashill’s latest work on the topic. The cover-up/conspiracy sections dominate the book, and beg for some sort of flow chart with the names of the individuals from the NTSB, FBI, and CIA to assist the reader in keeping track of who’s who.

Cashill initially focuses on those from the CIA and FBI who have no aeronautic experience who took over control of the investigation of TWA 800. He attacks the Zoom-climb documentary produced by the CIA as the fuel tank explodes and the front section of 800 shears off. One has to go online and search for the videos, as once again, no diagrams are provided in the book. The supposed 2000 feet of zoom (continued climb) is rather suspect as, in my opinion, the drag created by the open front end of the aircraft would prevent any climbing. Many of the eyewitnesses remarked that the plane just stopped, disintegrated, and plummeted to the ocean below.

Also, in my opinion, one of the most compelling arguments for an accident/conspiracy/cover-up, is mentioned toward the books end. If faulty wiring caused sparking which resulted in igniting fumes in a near empty fuel tank, why were 747’s not grounded (to the best of my knowledge) to rectify this situation, as were DC 10’s after the engine fell off of the American DC 10 on the Memorial Day weekend May 25,1979 in Chicago, and more recently the the Boeing 737 Max?

Cashill does fine work while dealing with the crash, witnesses and personnel involved in the investigation. Where he goes astray is by attacking Bill Clinton, the President during this tragedy. Cashill drums up rationale that Clinton was protecting himself in regard to the upcoming election, and a terrorist attack, or a naval training exercise gone wrong would be catastrophic for his re-election.
The farther and farther Cashill rips into the Clintons, even making comparisons to Benghazi moments and finding time to disparage Obama, the more and more this reader became disinterested in Cashill’s story. On page 111 he makes a point that Clinton’s advisor Dick Morris reminded the president that he had “a soft underbelly. Cashill then chimes in, “Too many voters did not trust this former draft-dodger in his role as commander in chief.” Did the voters feel more comfortable with his successor, George W Bush who was days from losing his deferment and strings were pulled up high to get him into the air national guard? Or do voters feel more comfortable with the current occupant and his bone spurs?

Though someone reading this review may believe I digress, the book is filled with these little nuggets of hypocrisy, and the deeper one gets into Cashill’s diatribes, the more one loses interest, and begins to look at Cashill as another tin hat conspiracy theorist. If Cashill would have just concentrated on the facts, and not his opinions about the Clintons, the book would have been better.

To conclude, as said by many, jets just don’t explode on their own and fall out of the sky. Cashill yields solid rationale for TWA 800 being shot out of the sky, with the most likely scenario, a US naval training mistake. Two thirds of the book deals with cover-up and conspiracy theories. Some make sense, others not so much. The book could have benefitted from photos, diagrams and personnel flow charts, in particular for someone new to the topic. He wastes the readers time with his attacks on the Clintons, rather than just including them in his work as support for a cover-up. As a reviewer, I don’t care that Cashill appears to lean far to the right, but he allows his emotions to distastefully detract from his manuscript. The author would have been better served if he had just stuck to the facts.

As a reader of Jack Cashill's excellent American Thinker articles, particularly the ones pertaining to TWA 800, I was excited to discover the release of this book, which I read in one sitting. Not only is it well researched, documented, and organized, the author's writing style draws you in and compels you to keep turning the pages.

While hardly surprising, the painstaking detailing of government corruption -- from silencing and discrediting witnesses, to instructing the FBI to tamper with evidence to fit the desired narrative, to arresting two innocent people who dared to uncover to the truth -- should make every American angry. Cashill connects the dots and provides ample evidence to support his assertions. He also recounts his biased treatment by the media, including the supposedly "fair and balanced" network, in branding him a "conspiracy theorist" and giving him a ridiculously short amount of time to address complex questions and respond to criticism.

In terms of the witnesses themselves, what surprised me the most was that many were aviation and military professionals -- not attention-seekers after their "fifteen minutes of fame." Their passion for and relentless pursuit of truth, along with the author's, provides a stark contrast to the self-aggrandizing bureaucrats and government "leaders" complicit in the election year cover-up. Using the example of Rep. Kurt Weldon, the book is also cautionary tale for any honest person who seeks and serves political office for noble reasons and dares to take a stand for justice.

The corruption at every level of government is staggering: how these people live with themselves is beyond comprehension.

To skeptics and believers alike, all I can say is read the book before you draw any conclusions. And thank you, Jack Cashill, for your tireless efforts to uncover the truth about TWA 800.

At the same time, it is very distressing that, in the most-advanced country in the world, there can be so much corruption and deceit, resulting in such a catastrophic loss of life, all for the purpose of political gain.
