I kept going back and forth on what to rate this book. For sure, do NOT read this book unless you are really interested in the murders. Otherwise, it will not hold your interest for long. As being someone who was interested in the murders, I was able to get through it. However, towards the end I found myself glancing down at how much more I had to read. If you're interested in the murders, you will get some enjoyment our of the book (maybe enjoyment is the wrong word, but I'm sure you know what I mean).
Now the book really could have been presented in a more interesting way. This book was all facts, and that's ok. But the author wasn't smart in making it interesting. Many facts were repeated over and over so that it felt like the author was just filling pages. The book jumped around in time, which made it not only more obvious when it was being repetitive, but when things jumped back in time and acted like you didn't know what happens it made it a bit dull since you DID already know what happened. You can write a book based on facts in an interesting way. Sadly, this book didn't do that. It just laid it out in a very bland and clinical way.
While most of it is on public record, some of it is speculation. What bothers me so much about the speculation part is the author treats it as though it is fact. At one point there was math about how many poisoned bottles were on the market at the time of the recall. The math might have been sound, but it was based upon pure speculation. As were other things throughout the book. Speculation is fine, just be careful how you use it. However, the true facts are all footnoted so you can, if you choose, check them out. Be warned, there are many however.
Overall, this does show a side of the investigation that isn't usually publicized. And one that makes Johnson and Johnson look a bit tarnished. Now I downloaded the book when it was still free. The price at the time of this review is $2.99. I'm not sure I would pay that much, but you have to base how much you will pay by your interest really. My rating of a 3 is based on the fact that I have interest in the murders and what surrounded them as well as the fact that it was free. I don't feel like I completely wasted my time, but I feel the book could have been done better. If you are thinking about this book and are interested in the surroundings of what happened and are willing to pay whatever the price is, then I say give it a shot. If you only have a passing interest or no interest, this book is not for you. I may get around to the next two in the series but it will have to be after a few other books. This type of writing becomes a marathon after a while. But, it appears the author has written about something he is passionate about. You have to give him that.
