Hosting a dinner party is a special kind of occasion. You welcome old and new friends into your home and gather around the table. You put out platters of food prepared just for that table of people, passing them around until everyone’s had their fill. This sense of sharing and togetherness feeds more than just bellies. It is what helps us stay connected, form new relationships, and build lasting bonds with our chosen families. During socially distanced times, the perfect dinner party might have felt like a lost art, but in For the Table, food writer Anna Stockwell provides all the tools needed for bringing back the ritual of hosting memorable yet modern dinner parties. Editorial Reviews
Review
―Ben Mims, cooking columnist, Los Angeles Times
“Anna has an intuitive sense of how to create simple food that looks and tastes anything but. This book might just be what brings back my entertaining spark.”
―Christopher Morocco, senior food editor and test kitchen director at Bon Appétit“Anna Stockwell’s For the Table is a cookbook actually designed for feeding a crowd, with full menus all planned out from apps to dessert and consideration for a range of dietary needs. I flagged the vibrant green-and-red spinach and ricotta dumplings in a Calabrian chile-tomato sauce to make ASAP. It’s impeccably organized and delightful, just like Anna.”―Alex Beggs, Bon Appétit
“In the dinner party Olympics, Anna Stockwell takes the gold—and this is her training manual. Here, she shows us how to host with style, with grace, and without stress. It starts with snacks, of course (potato chips served alongside ice-cold cherries!). And it always, always finishes with dessert (“very wiggly” yogurt panna cotta). And in-between those two things is the core of Anna’s approach: a two-platter technique that gets an impressive dinner on the table, yet also allows a host to do all the other little things that make an evening matter. Like lighting candles. Or writing name cards. . . . In this way, For the Table isn’t just a collection of recipes—it’s a full-blown dinner party philosophy, a blueprint to using food as a way to connect. If we follow it, not only will our parties be stronger, our relationships will, too.”
―David Tamarkin, editorial director of King Arthur Baking and author of Cook90
“Anna Stockwell is the most natural-born host—both in real life and on the page. Her recipes sing with flavor, her table sparkles with candlelight, and wherever she is, there follows laughter and joy. For the Table is the no-nonsense guide to entertaining for everyone who wishes to have more fun and eat better while hosting family and friends.”
―Sarah Copeland, author of Every Day is Saturday, Feast, and Instant Family Meals

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2024This book had been developed for people who like to share gatherings with few or many friends around the table. It is fabulous for beginners and experienced cooks. It contains all of the ingredients for you to host a dinner party. The recipe menus are organized by season and each menu contains a vegetarian option. Everything I have made from this book gets rave reviews. I am cooking my way through fall and want to make the braised chicken thighs with beans prunes and olives every week. It is absolutely delicious. It is such a simple recipe and it packs a large comfort "wow" from everyone I serve it to. Her meals can be prepared ahead of time and cooked while you are enjoying your guests. Other standouts include the slow roasted salmon, lamb meatballs, cauliflower steaks with a honey sherry glaze (that glaze is money!!!) and Delica squash with roasted grapes. She has ideas for drinks, appetizers and sweets. She provides game plans to help you organize for stress free entertaining. It is my new go to book for entertaining and everyday. You need this in your collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2023I like almost everything about this book.
• Gorgeous to look at from cover to cover.
• Readable print
• Brief and very helpful orientation to her way of entertaining
• Photos are gorgeous AND helpful
• USEFUL index
• HEALTHY recipes that are extraordinarily appealing
• Each recipe is coded: gluten-free, vegan, meat-free, dairy-free, pescatarian - to make it easy to select recipes that suit your guests.
• Simple, approachable recipes
• Easy-to-find ingredients with a few intriguing ingredients that might become staples in my kitchen (e.g. Aleppo Pepper)
• Complete (simple) menus, often with suggestions for wine pairings or cocktails
• Thoughtful (not over-the-top) appetizers and desserts
• Great instructions for preparing the food. She makes things like “Crispy-Skinned Sliced Duck Breast, approachable.
The only thing I don’t like is the binding, which does not open flat. Perhaps this binding saves her customers a few dollars, but EVERYTHING about this book is First Class and so it makes me wish for perfection.
From the back cover: “A cookbook about the art of pleasing everyone who comes to your table.” [without stressing out.]
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2022I initially purchased this book because I was a fan of Anna's work at Epicurious and Bon Appetit, and had found myself missing her easy but delicious recipes when she left those sites. This cookbook has definitely filled that void, and more---the recipes and menus have all the flavors and ease I enjoyed in her previous recipes, but they somehow feel simultaneously more stylish and simple. It's filled with the kind of recipes I want to make to impress guests, but also just want to eat with my husband on a Wednesday night. (And it's so gorgeous that I want to keep it on my coffee table.) Doesn't get much better than that.
I've already made the boiled orange cake and the hot honey ribs, and they were fabulous. Can't wait to cook my way through this book and dive into Anna's beautiful world.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022My daughter and I have been enjoying looking through this beautiful new Cookbook/Guide to help make having people over easy. It inspired me to set a pretty table and just have a little dinner party. Anna was right…. It doesn’t have to be stressful! I am not a “foodie” or really great cook, but I made a couple of her recipes and put the food on pretty platters and voila…. My guests were impressed! So was I! I even made a couple of the dishes for our weeknight meals and everything tasted so fresh and delicious and it was easy! I highly recommend this book and it will make a wonderful gift for anyone!!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2022I love this cookbook! For The Table is my new go to for inspiration when hosting a dinner. Every dish I’ve made so far has been easy to execute, clean, delicious and visually stunning.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2023I thought this book would help me with ideas for entertaining - small groups - with presentation and foods I could integrate so it wasn’t the same old thing. Blah. I found nothing worthwhile and donated this cookbook to the local thrift store.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2023I like Anna Stockwell’s recipes because she gives a good description as to why and how to do each step. Generally, the recipes are easy.
