The descriptions are great, quite imaginative and they will help you create an amazing world inside your mind. The characters are amazing. They are deep and meaningful to the story, with different layers to it. You’ll have your standard characters from this kind of books, like dwarfs and trolls, but also new ones (at least for me) like giant gothicans. It’s great to see an author contribute to the imaginary world that exists inside fantasy books (and its readers’ mind).
If the rest of the series is as good as this, it’s going to be a sure hit.
Braxton was already destined for a journey, but the treasures he obtained that fateful day took him down a path he could never have imagined. Old maps to worlds unknown, a fascinating book of a mysterious language, and unidentified gold coins, as he searches for answers he is confronted with greed and self-preservation.
Braxton finds friends along his exile, even if they fear him at first. The dwarves were afraid he would turn them into crickets, but helped him and Nixy along their way.
And now he magically steps into a new series FANTASTICA of which TAERAL’S VOID is Book 1. The writing is ever more polished and sophisticated. As the author states, ‘Fantastica was written a long time ago. So long ago, in fact, that I had forgotten about it for almost two decades. While going through my mother's house, after her death in early 2017, I came across a box containing this manuscript in longhand. It was written after The Wardstone Trilogy, but before I started writing The Legend of Vanx Malic. I estimate it will be at least four books, maybe five in all.‘ A fine promise for us!
Briefly the complex plot is as follows – ‘After finding a strange medallion and some maps with markings that no one in his village can understand, Braxton Bray decides to take it all to the Hall of Scholars in the kingdom's capital. But greed is everywhere. Braxton and a tough young female caravan guard named Nixy are forced to run for their lives, for someone else wants what Braxton found and is willing to go to great lengths to take it from him. With a hefty, kingdom wide, bounty on their heads, not even the great wizards of the Sorcerious can help them. Left with nothing but each other, Braxton and Nixy have no choice but to get on a ship and go on an adventure that will take them places they would have otherwise never imagined. Elves, dwarves, giant gothicans, and trolls, treacherous forests on distant shores, love, death, terror, and magic all await anyone brave enough to go along.’
You must read MR Mathias to appreciate the manner in which he holds together characters through long novels and brings solutions to all the adventures he creates. Some have difficult with the names at first, but remember this is fantasy and no easy common name would be suitable. Mathias knows exactly how to weave a spell that entraps us from book to book.
