About the Author

The Translator: Aisha Abdurrahman at Tarjumana Bewley is one today s most prolific translators of classical Arabic work into English. Aisha Bewley not only understands Arabic but she is also aware of the basic meanings and nature of teachings and history of Islam. Her knowledge is born of experience and direct transmission, not merely academic theory and learning by rote. For more than twenty-five years she has been concerned with making the contents of many classical works in Arabic more Accessible to English-speaking readers for the first time, including Ash-Shifa of Qadi Iyad.

I'm giving the Feras Hamza paperback 5-Stars for most honest translation. Aisha Bewley's hardcover I give 2-Stars only. Bewley hardcover book is nice, but she watered down the translation much much more than Hamza did. Feras Hamza's translation isn't so watered down and faithful to the original text. I have both translations of Tafsir Al-Jalalayn and if you are interested in this Tafsir and want to know which translation is the most faithful to the text then it would be Feras Hamza's translation. The hard part is that both translations appear on the same Amazon page, as the hardcover choice is Aisha Bewley and the paperback is Feras Hamza. I ended up with both of translations and while neither is perfect, the Hamza translation can be trusted to deliver the better English rendering.

I was looking forward to using this text because of the recommendation of this version by Jalal Al-Din Al-Mahalli and Jalal Al-Din Al-Suyuti which was mentioned in Ismail Ebrahim's "Quran Made Easy".

The problem with this version is that it has an estimated 1624 pages and no linked table of contents, and I wasn't able to use the search feature to move to other locations in the book.

I would recommend that you not purchase this book until the TOC is linked and the search feature works to allow you to navigate the book easier.

The material itself looks very informative, it's a matter of getting to the information that limits my evaluation of this product.

I would highly recommend the Tafsir to everyone. It is not too long but at the same time gives a nice background and the context of the Ayats. The interpretation of the Ayats is also very well done. I was particularly happy to see that the interpretation of the Ayats was in bold letters while the background information and the author's own commentary (interspersed between the interpretation of the Ayats) was in normal (no bold) text. This makes it very easy to see what is directly attributed to the narrower interpretation of the Ayats and what is the author's own judgement regarding the broader explanation/context of the Ayats. The Tafsir comes highly recommneded by Sh. Hamza Yusuf in one of his lectures. I would recommend it very very highly.

This translation is very well done. I did have a copy of Aisha Bewley`s translation but that was very disappointing because she left out main points of grammar. This boggles me because that's what you also want in it, the points of grammar, that's the jalalayn. I use use this one as a student of Arabic when I get stuck with the Arabic copy and improve my translating skills.
